、A)Last July, Julie Baldocchi's mother had a massive stroke and was paralyzed. Baldocchi suddenly had tobecome a family caregiver, something that she wasn't prepared for. "I was flying by the seat of my pants," saysBaldocchi, an employment specialist in San Francisco. Both of her parents are 83, and she knew her fathercouldn't handle her mother's care. The hospital recommended putting her mother in a nursing home. Baldocchiwasn't willing to do that. But moving her back into her parents' home created other problems. Baldocchi,48, ismarried and lives about a mile away from her parents. She has a full-time job and has back problems thatmake it difficult for her to lift her mother. "I couldn't do it all," she says. "But I didn't even know how to findhelp."

B)With help from the Family Caregiver Alliance, she eventually hired a live-in caregiver. "But even if you planintellectually and legally, you're never ready for the emotional impact," Baldocchi says. In the first two monthsafter her mother's stroke, she lost about 30 pounds as stress mounted. More than 42 million Americans providefamily caregiving for an adult who needs help with daily activities, according to a 2009 survey by the AARP.An additional 61.6 million provided at least some care during the year. And many are unprepared.

C)While many parents lack an advance care directive, it's the most basic and important step they can take. Thedirective includes several parts, including: a durable power of attorney, which gives someone legal authority tomake financial decisions on another's behalf; a health care proxy, which is similar to the power of attorney, except it allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment; and a living will that outlinesinstructions for end-of-life care. (For example, parents can say if they want to be kept alive by artificialmeasures.) "It's invaluable for the kids, because it's hard to make those decisions for a parent," says

JenniferCona, an elder-law attorney at Genser Dubow Genser & Cona in Melville, N.Y. An advance care directive isthe first line of defense if a situation arises, says Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the Family CaregiverAlliance, which supports and educates caregivers. Without an advance directive, the family will have topetition the court to be appointed the parent's legal guardian, says https://www.360docs.net/doc/b6448194.html,.

D)It's important for families to talk about long-term care so the adult children know their parents' preferences, wishes and goals, says Lynn Feinberg, a caregiving expert at AARP. But ifs not an easy conversation. Elderlyparents are sometimes suspicious of their children's financial motives, says Susan John, a financial planner atFinancial Focus in Wolfeboro, N.H. One client asked John to hold a family meeting because they needed anintermediary to talk about financial issues, she says. And when there are many siblings, the family decisionscan become a three-ring circus with much acrimony, says Ann-Margaret Carrozza, an elder-law attomey inGlen Cove, N.Y. Families who need information and help sorting out disagreements can call on elder-lawattorneys, financial planners, geriatric care managers and caregiver support groups. In February, AARP said itwill offer its members a new caregiving support service through financial services firm Oenworth.

E)Many families are unprepared for quick decisions, especially when they find out that Medicare doesn't pay forlong-term care, Feinberg says. The median cost of a year in a private room at a nursing home in 2011 was$77,745, according to Genworth. And only those who have spent most of their assets can qualify for Medicaidto pay for the nursing home.

F)Assisted living is another option. Residents can have their own apartment to maintain some independence. Butthe facilities generally provide personal care services, such as meals, housekeeping and assistance withactivities. Still, it's not cheap: The national median cost in 2011 was $39,135, according to Genworth. Assistedliving isn't covered by Medicaid.

G)If they have a choice, at least 90% of elderly parents prefer to stay at home as long as they can, according toAARP research. But if the parents can no longer safely live at home, it can be hard for children to move theminto an adult care facility. There may be another option. Sometimes the home can be modified so a parent canstay there. For example, Baldoechi put in a chair lift for her mother. She also arranged for a home caregiver.

H) Family caregivers take over many responsibilities. One might manage a parent's finances, while anothersibling will take the parent to doctors' appointments and shopping. Those who move in with a parent take on asignificant and sustained burden of care. Jan Walker moved into her mother's home in Leesburg, Fla. After hermother, who is 83, had fallen, she wasn't able to get around as well. Walker,55, has three brothers. But she isthe only daughter, is divorced and has no children. "I always knew that this was the role that I would have, andI guess my mind was prepared for it," says Walker, who now is a full-time caregiver and works from home asa tutorial instructor for a digital scrapbooking website. "When you get into the trenches, it's literally baptismby fire," she says. "New things come up. It's not just about advance planning for finances or medical care. It'severything," she says.

I) Carcgivers need to also watch their own health. "There is such a thing as caregiver burnout," Cona says.Among female caregivers 50 and older,20% reported symptoms of depression, according to a 2010 study onworking caregivers by MetLife. "It's a hard job," Walker says. "But most worthwhile things are hard. She wasalways there for me when I needed a helping hand. It's only natural that I be here for her now."

Beauty and Body Image in theMedia

A. Images of female bodies are everywhere. Women—and their bodyparts--sell everything from food to cars.Pop ular film and television actressesare becoming younger, taller and thinner. Some have even been known tofaint onthe

set from lack of food. Women's magazines are full &articles urging thatif they can just lose thoselast twentypounds, they'll have it all—the perfect marriage, loving children, great sex,and a rewarding career

B. Why arc standards of beauty being imposed on women, the majorityofwhom are naturally larger and moremat ure than any of the models? The roots, some analysts say, are economic. By presenting an ideal difficult toachieve an dmaintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries arc assured of growth andprofits. And it's noaccident that youth is increasingly promoted, along withthinness, as an essential criterion of beauty. If not allwomen need to loseweight, f or sure they're all aging, says the Quebec Action Network for Women'sHealth inits 2001 report. And, according to th e industry, age is a disasterthat needs to be dealt with.

C. The stakes are huge. On the one hand, women who are insecure about their bodies arc more likely tobuybea uty products, new clothes, and diet aids. It is estimated that the dietindustry alone is worth anywherebetween 40 to 1 00 billion (U.S.. a year selling temporary weight loss (90% to 95% of dieters regainthe lostweight.. On the other ha nd, research indicatesthat exposure to images of thin, young, air-brushed femalebodies is linked todepression, loss of self-esteem and the development of unhealthy eating habitsin womenand girls.

D. The American research group Anorexia Nervosa & Related EatingDisorders, Inc. says that one out of everyfo ur college-aged women usesunhealthy methods of weight control--including fasting, skippingmeals, excessive exercise, l axative (泻药. abuse, andself-induced vomiting. The pressure to be thin is also affectingyoung girls:the Canadian Wo men's Health Network warns that weight control measures are nowbeing takenby girls as young as 5 and 6. America n statistics are similar.Several studies, such as one conducted by MarikaTiggemann and Levina Clark in2006 titled "A ppearance Culture in 9- to 12-Year-Old Girls: Media andPeerInfluences on Body Dissatisfaction," indicate that nearly half of allpreadolescent girls wish to be thinner, andas a result have engaged in a dietor are aware of the concept of dieting. In 2003, Teen magazine reported that35percent of girls 6 to 12 years old have been on at least one diet, a nd that 50to 70 percent of normal weightgirls believe they are overweight. Overallresearch indicates that 90% of wo men are dissatisfied with theirappearance insome way. Media activist Jean Kilbourne concludes that, "Women are sol

d toth

e diet industryby the magazines we read and the television programs we watch, almost all o

f which make us fe el anxiousabout our weight."

E. Perhaps the most disturbing is the fact that media images of femalebeauty are unattainable for all but a verys mall number of women. Researchersgenerating a computer model of a woman with Barbie-doll proportions, forexample, found that her back would be too weak to support the weight of herupper body, and her bodywould be too narrow to contain more than halfa liverand a few centimeters of bowel. A real woman built thatway would suffer fromchro nic diarrhea ( 慢性腹泻. and eventually die frommalnutrition. Jill Barad,President of Mattel (which manufactures Barb ie., estimated that 99% of girls aged 3 to 10 years old own atleast oneBarbie doll. Still, the number of real life wo men and girls who seek asimilarly underweight body isepidemic, and they can suffer equally devastatinghealth conseq uences. In 2006 it was estimated that up to450,000 Canadian womenwere affected by an eating disorder.

F. Researchers report thatwomen's magazines have ten and one-half times more ads and articlespromotingweight l oss than men's magazines do, and over three-quarters of thecovers of women's magazines include atleast one message about how to change awoman's bodily appearance--by diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery.Television andmovies reinfor ce the importance of a thin body as a measure of a woman's worth.Canadianresearcher Gregory Fouts reports that ov er three-quarters of the femalecharacters in TV situation comedies areunderweight, and only one in twenty areabove a verage in size. Heavier actresses tend to receive negativecomments frommale characters about their bodies ("How abo ut wearing a sack?" ., and 80 percent of thesenegative comments are followed by cannedaudience laughter.

G. There have been efforts in the magazine industry to buck (抵制,反抗. the trend. For several years the Queb ecmagazine Coup de Pouce hasconsistently included full-sized women in their fashion pages and Chatelainehaspledged not to touch up photos and not to include models less than 25 yearsof age. In Madrid, one of theworld's biggest fa shion capitals, ultra-thinmodels were banned from the runway in 2006. Furthermore Spainhas recentlyundergone a proj ect with the aim to standardize clothing sizes through using aunique process inwhich a laser beam is used to measur e real life women's bodiesin order to find the most tree to lifemeasurement.

H. Another issue is the representation of ethnically diverse women inthe media. A 2008 study conducted byJuani ta Covert and Travis Dixon titled"A Changing View: Representation and Effects of the Portrayal ofWomen ofColor i n Mainstream Women's Magazines" found that although there was anincrease in therepresentation of women of c01ou r, overall white women wereoverrepresented in mainstream women'smagazines from 1999 to 2004.

I. The barrage of messagesabout thinness, dieting and beauty tells "ordinary" women that theyare always inneed of adjustment--and that the female body is an object to beperfected. Jean Kilboume argues that theoverwhelming pres ence of media imagesof painfully thin women means that real women's bodies have become invisible in the mass me dia。The real tragedy, Kilbourne concludes, is that many womeninternalizethese stereotypes, and judge themselves by the beauty industry'sstandards. Women learn to comparethemselves to other women, and to compete withthem for mal e attention: This focus on beauty and desirability"effectivelydestroys any awareness and action that might help to cha nge that climate."

回答46-56题:

How to Make Peace with Your Workload

A)Swamped (忙碌的), under the gun, just struggling to stay above water...; whateveroffice cliche you employto depict it. we've all been in that situation where wefeel like we might be swallowed up by our workload.Nonetheless many a way maybe used to manage your to-do list to prevent feeling overwhelmed. How tomakepeace with your wo rkload once and for all goes as follows.

B)Getorganized. "Clear the deadwood outof your desk and keep your office in shape, which enhances yourcapabi lity tohandle other tasks and raises the probability that you'll retrieve the itemsyou do need in a fasterand easier fash ion," says Jeff Davidson who worksas a work/life expert and writer of more than 50 books onworkplace issues."Whe n something can be disposed, let i! go, given in reality most of whatyou retain isreplaceable." Joel Rudy, vice presid ent of operations forPhotographic Solutions, with better than thirty yearsof business managementexperience, believes th at keeping organized is a must. "Messy work areas arenonproductive insome measure. Provided that you can't locate a document or report easily becauseit's lost in apile of mess, then you have a problematic situation," he says."Ther eby you are supposed to take the time totidy up your work areas andkeep your important files, manuals and reports in an accessible location, whichwill maximize your efficiencies."

C)Make ato-do list, then cover it up. It may sound weird, but it works, says JessicaCarlson, an accountexecutive at Bluefish Design Studio which is an advertisingconsulting firm. Carlson urges her team to utilizeto-do lists to stay on trackand highlight items that are a priority. "Cover up the list, with theexception of onehigh-priority task at one time," she suggests. "This will allow you to focus better onthe task at hand;otherwise, it will be easy to get overwhe lmed if you're readingthrough a to-do list that spans an entire page.Concentrating on a single itemwill make your tas ks appear like they are more doable," Carlson says.

D)Stopmultitasking. Despite what you may consider multitasking, it'scounterproductive. Unless you're drinkingcoffe e while scanning your morninge-mails, you're not saving any time by attempting to do ten things atonce. "If you fin d yourself getting tangled intoo many things, it may be of much necessity of you to re-- evaluate yourinvolvement," Rudy says. "Your mind will wander from one topic toanother and you.may endup never accomplishing a thing." Rud y recommendsthe best way to stop multitasking is to create priority listswith deadlines."When applicable, complete on e project before you move further on to thenext one," he says.

E)Set timelimits. Deborah Chaddock-Brown, a work-at-home s'.mgle parent, says she'sfrequently overwhelmedby t he demands of maintaining order in her residence andrunning her own business. Still, she manages to "doit all" by s ettinga time limit for each task. "I have the type of personality thatflits (轻轻地掠过)from thingto thing because I do have so much on my plate,"Brown says. "As a consequence I assign time slots: For thenext 15 minutesI will partic ipate in Social media for the purpose of marketing mybusiness (not sendingphotos or playingFarmville)and that is the only thing I am about to do for the next 15 minutes. When thetime is up, I move on to the next task. That way, a t night I don't endup with a pile of tasks to accomplish eventhough I felt busy all day."

F)Talk toyour manager. "Quite often, peopleare working on things that are no longer a top priority, butsomeone forgot totell them (that they're no longerimportant). There are usually clear priorities in themanager's head; he or she has just not done a great job communicating those with the employee," saysHollyGreen, CEO of The Human Factor. Green's suggestion unfoldsin thismanner: "If you find yourselfconfrontedwith too many responsibilitieS, sit down,no

te the significantthings you are in charge of, and go toyour manager to have a conversation todiscuss priorities, trade -offs, timecommitments andinterdependencies required to do each thing well, and then ask whatyou should stop worki ng on or work onless so you can get the right thingsdone." Greefi says managers should be willing to help sort out priorities, solong as employees have a can-do approach and aren't just complaining abouttheir workload.

G)Eliminatetime wasters. "If interruptions are l keeping you from yourresponsibilities, learn how to deal withthe m accordingly," says EileenRoth, author of Organizing for Dummies. Roth proposes the followingsuggestionsto comba t disruptions: "Use voicemail to cut down on telephone interruptions, turn offthe alertthat says "You've got an e-mail' and give staffmembers a set time to visit you." Justin Gramm, president ofGlobellaBuyers Realty, exemplifies Roth's point. "E-mail had been a big time waster for me in the pastbecause it wasa constant interruption, causing me to lo se focus on the task at hand," hesays. Sincedetermined to check his e-mails only twice a day, Gramm says he hasbe come much more efficient. "If peoplewant to get more work done, theyneed to stop checking e-mails and get down t o business," he says.

H)Assessyour workload before taking on new tasks. "The paradox of today's workenvironment is that the moreyo u do, the more that's expected of you,"Davidson says. In order to better assess your workload, Davidsonsuggests aski ngyourself the following questions before agreeing to undertake newresponsibilities: Is the taskaligned (使一致)with y our prioritiesand goals; Are you likely to be as prone to saying yes to such arequesttomorrow or next week; what el se could you do that would be morerewarding; what other pressing tasks andresponsibilities are you likely toface; Do es the other party have options other than you; Will he or shebecrushed if you say no?

I)Want to know more? Most of our expertsrecommended books for additional tips on how to maximizeefficiency, but onebook was mentioned time and again. Check out The Seven Habits of HighlyEffectivePeople.

46"The more you do, the more you are expected to do" has been a paradoxin today's work environment.

47、As longas employees have a can-do attitude and do not just complain about theirworkload, the managers

wouldlike to help them decide what to do first.

48As asingle parent, Deborah Chaddock-Brown finds it difficult to make a balancebetween business and housework.

49、Thereare many useful methods of preventing people from feeling overwhelmed byworkload.

50、Messywork areas are nonproductive to some extent, so you are supposed to keep yourwork areas tidy and

important files at hand.

51、To knowmore about how to maximize efficiency, The Seven Habits of Highly EffectivePeople is recommended.

52、In Organizing for Dummies, using voice mail to cut down on telephone interruptionsand turning offthe e-mail noticeare suggested in combating interruptions.

53、According to Rudy, the best way to stop multitasking is to make a list ofpriorities and set deadlines for

each task.

54、Focusingon a single matter will make your tasks appear more possible to be done.

55、In fact, most of what people retain is substitutable, so dispose the things that aredisposable.

Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占) one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it. Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite

PART V READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN] In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. TEXT A Racket, din clamor, noise, whatever you want to call it, unwanted sound is America's most widespread nuisance. But noise is more than just a nuisance. It constitutes a real and present danger to people's health. Day and night, at home, at work, and at play, noise can produce serious physical and psychological stress. No one is immune to this stress. Though we seem to adjust to noise by ignoring it, the ear, in fact, never closes and the body still responds—sometimes with extreme tension, as to a strange sound in the night. The annoyance we feel when faced with noise is the most common outward symptom of the stress building up inside us. Indeed, because irritability is so apparent, legislators have made public annoyance the basis of many noise abatement programs. The more subtle and more serious health hazards associated with stress caused by noise traditionally have been given much less attention. Nevertheless, when we are annoyed or made irritable by noise, we should consider these symptoms fair warning that other thing may be happening to us, some of which may be damaging to our health. Of many health hazards to noise, hearing loss is the most clearly observable and measurable by health professionals. The other hazards are harder to pin down. For many of us, there may be a risk that exposure to the stress of noise increases susceptibility to disease and infection. The more susceptible among us may experience noise as a complicating factor in heart problems and other diseases. Noise that causes annoyance and irritability in health persons may have serious consequences for these already ill in mind or body. Noise affects us throughout our lives. For example, there are indications of effects on the unborn child when mothers are exposed to industrial and environmental noise. During infancy and childhood, youngsters exposed to high noise levels may have trouble falling asleep and obtaining necessary amounts of rest. Why, then, is there not greater alarm about these dangers? Perhaps it is because the link between noise and many disabilities or diseases has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. Perhaps it is because we tend to dismiss annoyance as a price to pay for living in the modern world. It may also be because we still think of hearing loss as only an occupational hazard. 1. In Paragraph 1, the phrase "immune to" are used to mean ___. A.unaffected by B.hurt by C.unlikely to be seen by D.unknown by 2. 3. The author's attitude toward noise would best be described as ___. A.unrealistic B.traditional C.concerned D.hysterical Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage? A.Noise is a major problem; most people recognize its importance. B.Although noise can be annoying, it is not a major problem. C.Noise is a major problem and has not yet been recognized as such. D.Noise is a major problem about which nothing can be done.
