阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

King's Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to “learn from the masters”or get more creative with paint—free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.

The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species;it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula,a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

Byron's Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”.However,it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as

Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grant Chester in the south Cambridge shire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me,then perhaps you'll take it from Virginia Woolf—over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

36. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for ________.

A. attending the masters' class

B. learning life drawing

C. working with local artists

D. seeing an exhibition

37. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are ________.

A. common insects

B. wildlife enthusiasts

C. rarely seen snakes

D. impressive plants

38. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed ________.

A. to like walking

B. to fear pet bears

C. to be a heavy drinker

D. to finish university in 1805

39. In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake ________.

A. located in Grant Chester

B. owned by Lord Byron

C. surrounded by fields

D. discovered by Virginia Woolf

40. The passage mainly talks about ________.

A. unknown stories of Cambridge University

B. a way to become creative in art

C. the colourful life in the countryside

D. some places for weekend break

B

As you are probably aware, the latest job markets news isn’t good: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think.

That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job turnover data. After all,

existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations, terminations (终止) and retirements. In both good times and bad, turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2007, when the economy was still humming along, job growth was only 132,000, while turnover was 4.7 million!

And as it turns out, even today — with job growth near zero — over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.

I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher, it would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from (and compete for).

But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look; learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections.

So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up. Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.

41. The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate ________.

A. should not stop people from looking for a job

B. prevents many people from changing careers

C. deprives(剥夺)many people of job opportunities

D. does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening

42. Most job openings come from ________.

A. job growth

B. job turnover

C. improved economy

D. business expansion

43. The underlined word “humming” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

A. falling

B. satisfying

C. disappointing

D. growing

44. What does the author say about overall job growth?

A. It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.

B. It increases people’s confidence in the economy.

C. It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.

D. It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.

45. What is the key to landing a job according to the author?

A. Persistence (坚持).

B. Intelligence.

C. Education.

D. Experience.

C

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings.

Here is an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable

thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

46. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our ________.

A. financial rewards

B. self-respect

C. advertising ability

D. friendly relationship

47. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to ________.

A. lying

B. advertising

C. cheating

D. stealing

48. The underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” means ________.

A. offering advice to the clerk

B. reminding the clerk of the charged item

C. asking the clerk to be more attentive

D. telling the truth to the clerk

49.How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

A.We'll be very excited.

B.We'll feel unfortunate.

C.We'll have a sense of honor.

D.We'll feel sorry for the clerk.

50. The best title of this passage is ________.

A. Happiness through Honorable Actions

B. A Strong Sense of Humor

C. Keeping on Doing Exercise

D. A Beautiful Positive Energy

D

You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev

doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up, people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.

The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360°motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed (安装) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

51. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?

A. To protect people from the rain.

B. To check the weather forecast.

C. To predict a heavy rain.

D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

52. What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?

A. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.

B. His creation was inspired by an experience.

C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.

D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.

53. Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?

A. motor → canopy → sensors

B. motor → sensors → canopy

C. sensors → motor → canopy

D. canopy → motor → sensors

54. Paragraph 5 mainly tells us about ________ of the Lampbrella.

A. its moving speed

B. its appearance

C. its safety

D. its installation

55. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.

A. the designer will open a company to promote his product

B. the designer is confident that his creation is practical

C. the Lampbrella could be put into immediate production

D. the Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow

第三部分写作

第一节阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。(共 5 小

题;每小题2 分,满分10分)

When a rather dirty, poorly-dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of not only happy stories, but also sad ones. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is coming from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world’s great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. In fact, quite a few people will not give money to beggars now. Let us look at their arguments.

Firstly, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pathetic and actually make a good living from begging. Giving money to beggars only encourages this sort of evil. Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but there is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It’s hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently.

A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

56. What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 8 words.)

57. According to the passage, why is it not a good excuse that a person makes a living by begging? (No more

than 15 words.)

第二节61. (One possible version: )

A Voluntary Activity

Last Sunday, our class launched a voluntary activity, the theme of which is to make the city more beautiful and advocate a low-carbon lifestyle. In the morning, we went to plant trees in the suburbs. We worked in cooperation. Some dug holes, some carried and planted trees, and some watered them. In the afternoon, we went to People’s Square to hand out leaflets, raising people’s awareness of environmental protection. Most of the students think highly of the activity, which will surely produce a positive effect on our daily life.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s everyone’s duty to protect the environment. As long as there is the possibility of saving our planet, do take action now before it is too late. Low carbon living is surely a way of great significance.

The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “shmily” around the ho use, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal. “Shmily” was written in the steam left on t he mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. There was no end to the places where “shmily” would pop up. Little notes with “shmily” were found on car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were put inside shoes and left und er pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel(壁炉架)and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture. It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love—one that is pure and enduring (持久的). However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. It was based on passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmoth er had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house any more. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. “Shmily.” It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet (花束). As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s coffin and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came: S-h-m-i-l-y: See How Much I Love You. 21. The first paragraph is mainly about ________. A.what the word “shmily” means B.how the author’s grandparents played their special game C.how the author appreciated her grandparents’ game D.how the author’s grandparents cared for each other 22. The underlined phrase “pop up” in Paragraph 1 means ________. A. appear B. change C. survive D. work
