(English Listening & Speaking)

Course Description:

This course focuses on improving the oral skills of non-English major students in terms of fluency and accuracy. As listening skills are considered to be interrelated with oral skills, part of the course will be centering around how to enhance students listening skills by raising their metacognitive awareness about L2 listening.

Course Objectives:

This course aims to enhance your abilities in understanding authentic use of English for different purposes and commanding English for oral communication. After the course you will be able to:

1.understand the cognitive nature of listening process and raise metacognitive

awareness of L2 listening as well

2.develop a repertoire of listening strategies such as predicting, inferencing,

elaborating and reconstructing etc.

3.gain full knowledge about how they get at the meaning of aural input and finally

develop learner autonomy

4. improve the fluency and accuracy of their oral production and develop certain

conversational sills on general topic

Course Outline:

Assessment:

1.Class attendance and In-class participation will account for 20 % of your final

score.

2.There will be a pretest at the beginning of the semester to detect your listening

proficiency level, which may take up 20 % of your final score.

3. A posttest will be administered to test your achievement at the end of semester.

4.All the registered students are supposed to record a 3-minute-talk in MP3 format

on the chosen topic. (Students will draw a lot from a dozen of given topics 20 %) 5.Students are required to keep a learning diary once for a week, jotting down what

problems they had with listening and speaking/what is their weekly goal for language learning/what they will do to achieve the goal/how much time they want to spend on language learning that week/. The diary must be written carefully by typing on a template. As the course ends, students are required to staple their Learning diaries together and submit to the lecturer. (20%)

P.S. There is no designated textbook for this course. All the materials in textual, audio and video forms are selected by the lecturer. As such, students have to turn in a minimum amount of printing fees. The fees will be collected and kept by the study monitor, who is elected on the basis of volunteer as well as others’ votes
