A Busy Teenager

Sandy is a very busy teenager. She never has enough time for all she wants to do. Like many other American teenagers, she spends hours on the telephone, talking to her friends. She goes out for dates on weekends, a nd she babysits for other families’ children. And, of course, during the school year she has lots of homework to do.

During the football season, Sandy is busier than ever. She and several other pretty girls are cheerleaders for the high school football games. They lead the crowd in cheering for the school’s team.

The girls jump up and down together, cheering when the team has played well. When the team is not playing so well, the cheerleaders try to encourage the players. The cheers are usually not long, but it takes a long time to practice shouting them together.

3、Explanation of Difficult Sentences

(1)(Para 1)How safe is it to use mobile phones?

Analysis: It is “formal subject”, which means “to use mobile phone”Translation:使用移动电话安全吗?

Example: How difficult is it to learn English well?.

(2)(Para 1)Does it matter how old you are?

Analysis: It is “formal subject”, which means “how old you are”.

matter means “have weight, have import”.

Translation:它是否跟你的年龄有关?

Example: The tool matters a great deal to him.

(3)(Para 2)The British Association for the Advancement of Science has reported that using a mobile phone doubles the risk of developing brain cancer.

Analysis: that … is a object clause and using a mobile phone is a subject in the object clause.

Translation:英国科学发展联合机构报道使用移动电话得脑癌的风险两倍于不使用的人群。

Example: Americans often say that doing it by yourself is important.

(4)(Para 2)The report is based on the findings of a research that was made in Sweden, comparing 1617 patients having brain cancers between 1997 and 2003 with the same number of healthy people.

Analysis: comparing … is an accompan ying adverbial clause.

Translation:这份研究结果是建立在许多研究的基础上。1997年至2003年,在瑞典科学家们针对1617名脑癌患者和同等数量身体健康的人进行对比研究所得出的结果。

Example: They sat around the fire, talking with each other happily.

(5)(Para 2)However, one scientist has pointed out that DNA has the same qualities in all animals, and if radiation affects the genes in mice, it could also affect human genes.

Analysis: that … is a object clause , If … is a conditional clause , and…constitutes a compound complex sentence.

Translation:然而有位科学家指出,老鼠的DNA跟其他动物是一样的,既然辐射对老鼠的基因有害,那么对人同样如此。

Example: My mother agrees with me at last, and if I could agree with her, she would be happier.

(6)(Para 3)Their bones are not as thick as adults’and there are much worse effects to the children.

Analysis: and…constitutes a compound se ntence.

Translation:他们的骨架没有成年人结实,因此电话辐射对小孩的危害更大。Example: The book is not as thick as that one and there is less interesting conversations.

Li Na is a Chinese professional tennis player. She was born on February 26, 1982 in Wuhan ,China. When Li was 6 years old, she became a volleyball player. At the age of 9 she began to play tennis.
