People aren’t walking any more---if they can figure out a way to avoid it.

I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.

It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune, for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced –and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.

Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise— the most familiar and natural of all.

It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world, He cannot learn in a car.

The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot ca n evaluate what is basic and everlasting.

21.What is the national sickness?

A. Walking too much

B. Traveling too much

C. Driving cars too much

D. Climbing stairs too much.

22.What was life like when the author was young?

B. People often walked 25 miles a day

C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.

D. People considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.

23.The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that____.

A. middle-aged people like getting back to nature

B. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind

C. people need regular exercise to keep fit

D. going on foot prevents heart disease

24.What is the meaning of the underlined word “a steel river” in Paragraph6?

A. A queue of cars

B. A ray of traffic light

C. A flash of lightning

D. A stream of people

B

Let us begin by saying what causes our dreams. Our dreams do not come from another world. They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future either.

All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, wishes, needs and memories. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on ice or in snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today.

So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping(feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and the interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, home sick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom.

To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of the experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling his hands gently!

There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believed that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true, in other words, dreaming is a way of having your wishes carried out.

25.From the passage we learn that our dreams.

A.are quite different from our daily life

B.are the same as our daily life

C.have nothing to do with our daily life

D.are connected with our daily life to a certain degree

26.Homesick soldiers often dream of their families probably because.

A.their families are often hungry

B.they miss their families very much in the daytime

C.their families are very busy

D.they haven’t heard from their families for a long time

27.Some scientists’ explanation that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that didn’t come true.

A.is not widely accepted though it is a bit reasonable

B.is of no use for us

C.is not correct

D.is accepted by all people

28.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Most people often plan to do something important in their dreams.

B.The subjects of our dreams are usually something useless.

C.Some of the past experience may appear in people’s dreams.

D.Children often dream of fairies because they are tired of school.

C

Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father.

As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy’s little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children’s lives. In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind, compassion for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very reserved man, but to everybody’s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends.

Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also professes how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in.

29. What is the best title for the passage?

A. How my father loved me

Here is some must-know information from a handbook on how people behave in doing

business in some countries.

In Brazil

Brazilians are warm and friendly. They often stand close when talking and it is common for them to touch the person on the shoulder. People often greet each other (particularly

women) with light cheek kisses. Schedules tend to be flexible, with business meetings

sometimes starting later than planned. But to be safe, be on time. Meals can stretch for

hours—there’s no such thing as rushing a meal in Brazil. Lunches also can start in the mid to late afternoon. Brazilians are social, preferring face-to-face communication over emails or phone calls.

In Singapore

Singaporeans shake hands when they meet and often also greet each other with a small,

polite bow. Business cards should be offered and received with two hands. Arriving late is considered disrespectful. So be on time. Efficiency is the goal, so meetings and dealings often are fast-paced. Singaporeans are direct in their discussions, even when the subject is about money. Rank is important and authority is respected. This determines how people interact in meetings. For example, people avoid disagreeing outright with someone of a higher rank.

In the United Arab Emirates

In the UAE, status is important, so the most senior or oldest should be greeted first with their titles. The handshake seems to be longer than elsewhere. So, do not pull away from the

handshake. Women should cover themselves when it comes to dress. Men also tend to be covered from neck to elbows and down to the knees. People do not avoid entertaining in

their homes, but they also hold business meals at restaurants. Touching or passing food or eating with your left hand is to be avoided. When meetings are one-to-one, if your host offers you coffee, you should refuse. It might seem odd, but it is a cultural tradition. Coffee should only be accepted if it is already set out or presented.

In Switzerland

The Swiss tend to be formal and address each other by last name. They also are respectful of private lives. You should be careful not to ask about personal topics. Punctuality (守时) is vital,

something that comes from a deep respect for others’ time. Arrive at any meeting or event a few minutes early to be safe. They also have clear structure in their companies. Higher-ups make the final decisions, even if others might disagree. Neat, clean dress is expected. The Swiss follow formal table manners. They also keep their hands visible at the table and their elbows off the table. It is polite to finish the food on your plate.

33.Why do Singaporeans avoid arguing with their boss?

A. They put efficiency in the first place.

B. They dislike face-to-face communication.

C. They want to finish meetings as quickly as possible.

D. They are supposed to obey the person of a higher rank.

34.In the UAE, when should you refuse the coffee if it is offered?

A. When greeting seniors.

B. When meeting the host alone.

C. When attending a presentation.

D.When dining with business partners.

35.In which country do people care about where to put their hands at the dinner table?

A. In Brazil.

B. In Singapore.

C. In the United Arab Emirates.

D. In Switzerland.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 36 Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal(出卖,背叛). Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. 37 They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again. It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

●Learn to really trust yourself. Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

●38 If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated.

●39 Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life.

40 Instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

A. You didn’t lose “everything”

B. It is putting confidence in someone.

C. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D. Sometimes people simply can’t trust any more.

E. Remember that you can expect the best in return.

F. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.

G. Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

连词before在…

句式so…that…

定语从句的先行词是a bag of fruits,关系代词which指代先行词在句中充当动词buy的宾语。

2.Therefore改为However 考查连词。

5. for改为as 考查介词。短语take sth as....

6. that改为what或在that前加all 考查定语从句或者宾语从句。把that改成what的时候,what 引导宾语从句what I have learned充当动词use的宾语。

9. for后my改为your 考查代词。

One possible version

Dear classmates,

Good afternoon!

Today is March 2nd. The college entrance exams are really around the corner now. As time becomes limited and school work begins to pile up, many students start to feel much stressed and find it hard to concentrate and study efficiently. What should we do to avoid this?

First of all, it is highly advisable that we have some physical exercise in that it is the best way to reduce stress and help us relax. Second, having a proper study plan is of great importance too, since it can improve efficiency. Last but not least, we should pay special attention to our diet as a balanced and nutritious diet can keep a busy mind smart and energetic.

Only if we can do these three things mentioned above will we make our time of study and preparation work enjoyable, efficient and fruitful.

Thank you.

Text 10

My friend,David kept birds. One day he phoned and told me he was going away for a week He asked me to feed the birds for him and said that he would leave the key to his front door in my mailbox.Unfortunately,I forgot all about the birds until the night before David was going to return. What was worse, it was already dark when I arrived at his house.I soon found the key David gave me could not unlock either the front door or the back door.I was getting hopeless.I kept thinking of what David would say when he came back.I was just going to give up when I noticed that one bedroom window was slightly open.I found a barrel and pushed it under the window. As the barrel was very heavy,I made a lot of noise. But in the end,I managed to climb up and open the window.I actually had one leg inside the bedroom when I suddenly realized that someone was shining a torch up at me. I looked down and saw a policeman and an old lady, one of David’s neighbors.“What are you doing up there?” asked the policeman.Feeling like a complete fool,I replied,“I was just going to feed Mr. David’s birds.”
