1. Background knowledge

EQ: the short form for “emotional quotient”, which means the ability to manage ourselves and our relationship effectively----consists of four fundamental capacities: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social skill

IQ: the abbreviation for “intelligence quotient”, a measurement of a person?s intellectual ability in relation to that of the rest of the population.

2. Signs of High EQ or Low EQ

Listed below are general characteristics of people with high or low EQ. Now try to identify them. Tickle before a sign of high EQ.

1)√Expresses his/her feelings clearly and directly with sentences beginning with "I feel ..."

or "I feel like …”.

2)Often begins sentences with "I think you …”.

3)√Let his/her feelings lead him to healthy choices and happiness.

4)√Acts out of desire, not because of duty, guilt, force or obligation.

5)√Not motivated by power, wealth, status, fame, or approval.

6)√Be able to read non-verbal (非言语) communications.

7)Doesn't take responsibilities for his/her feelings; but blames others for them.

8)√Not dominated by negative emotions such as fear, worry, guilt, shame, embarrassment,

disappointment, hopelessness, powerlessness, dependency, discouragement.

9)Avoids responsibilities by saying things like: "What was I supposed to do? I had no

choice!”.

3. How Would He Respond?

I f two people had to do sth. they don?t like, or were forced to do sth. they hate, the one with low EQ would: complain, rebel, get angry …the one with high EQ would: develop a positive attitude towards the job he has to do, and try to change the sides he d oesn’t like …

Answer the following questions with no more than 10 words.

1) Why is judgment a more valuable contribution than knowledge ?

Because the application of knowledge takes judgment.

2) What stuff do intelligent but inflexible people lack ?

The ability to adapt. / The adaptive skills.

3) How can we develop Emotional Intelligence ?

To develop four adaptive skills: Raising consciousness. Using imaginary. Considering and reconsidering events. Integrating the perspectives of others.

4) How can we raise consciousness ?

To take note of what you are thinking and feeling.

5) How can we use imaginary?

To imagine what you want to achieve.

6) What?s the purpose of reconsidering events ?

To have as many interpretations as possible.

7) Why should we integrate others? perspectives ?

It?s a way of enlarging your senses.

8) What does our ability to think involve?

It involves the whole body.

9) What is the meaning of the last sentence of the text?

Without cultivating emotional intelligence, the academic training is useless.

3. Sentence analysis

1) Daniel Goleman suggests in his new book, Emotional Intelligence, the latest scientific findings seem to indicate that intelligent but inflexible people don?t have the right stuff in an age when the adaptive ability is the key to survival. (L6)
