A: The water in the lake smells so terrible!

B: Do you mean the pound in front of the D9?

C: Yeah, we have been there just now .The water is seriously polluted.

D: Not only the water in our school ,but also in the Yangtze River and other places ,the water pollution is becoming more and more serious.

A: Yes .Water pollution has now become a major global problem and is said to be the second most important environmental issue next to air pollution. Any change in the physical, chemical or biological properties of water will have a harmful effect on living things .Water pollution affects all the major water bodies of the world

B: Besides the water pollution and air pollution, there are also many other environmental problems, relating to growth in the human population and the shortage of resources ,such as white

pollution , carbon dioxide , conservation of water and soil , ozone-layer depletion and so on.

C: The environmental problems have been caused by many complex reasons .Take the water pollution as an example. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease the amount of water available for dealing with wastes. Due to water pollution, the entire ecosystem gets disturbed.

D: And the destruction of ecosystems exacerbate the shortage of water resources further because of the decreasing of their regulating capacity .Each part of the nature is closely related .When one part is abnormal ,the other will also be influenced .As we all know ,the world consists of more than 70 percent water ,and is covered by the atmosphere . Pollution can cause serious problems.

A: Environmental problems have been recognized as an important source of threats to human survival .Nowadays, environmental issues have caught the attention of the human

race.

B: The government has also taken measures to protect the environment by establishing laws. Strengthen the environmental protection is one of the basic national policies in China.

C: In my opinion, the environmental protection is affected by several interwoven factors, including the environmental legislation, ethics and education .

D: So you mean that all of these factors have played their part in influencing national level environmental decisions and personal level environmental values and behaviors.

C: Of course .And the government couldn’t overlook anyone of it.

A: I agree with your idea .I think that the awakening of people’s awareness of environmental protection is the most important .It’s the fundamental solution to the environmental problems.

B: And this requires the government enhance the propaganda of environmental protections .The quality of people in the society may have a great influence.

C: As far as I am concerned, the development of science and technology plays an important role in it .For example, the development and utilization of solar energy has effectively relieved the resource shortage.

D: Have you heard of the biological control in agriculture?

A: Biological control? What does it mean?

D: It is a method of controlling pests ,such as insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases .What is different from the traditional method is that it relies on predation, parasitism, herbivory, or other natural mechanisms.

C: Biological control can not only reduce the use of pesticides ,which is harmful to both the environment and our health , but also have a higher efficiency .

B: The environmental protection is not only the duty of one nation, but also all the human beings. The international cooperation is also necessary. Now we have made much progress in this area.

A: Yes. For example, the signing of Kyoto Protocol has made the program, that the world takes action to reduce carbon emissions which are causing the huge and destructive climate change.

C: But there are also many difficulties in the implementation of policy and program. What is the most important is to make a balance between the economy and environment. or they will be hard to received people’s approval when they decrease people’s living level.

B: Anyway, although complete environmental protection seems impossible at this current global position, many countries have established organizations and agencies devoted to environmental protection. There are also many International environmental protection organizations.

D: So when we want to make contribution to the environmental protection, we can take part in such organizations and be a volunteer.

A: It’s the duty for everyone to protect our home. Not only can we participate in some organizations, but also take actions in our daily life. For example, we can reduce the use of plastic goods, classify retrieving garbage and so on.

B: We should also pay attention to saving the energy. Turn the light off when you leave, turn off the air conditioner when nobody in the room, and the reuse of the water……These all are the good habits in everyday life.

C: Umm……I have an idea about the polluted pound in front of the D9.

D: What?

C: We can write a letter about the pollution of water body in our school to the headmaster to recommend treating the sewage.

D: And first we should make a survey. With the specific statistics our advice will be more convincing.

A: That’s a good idea. Let’s go!
