GREEN ICEBERGS

Icebergs are massive blocks of ice, irregular in shape; they float with only about 12 percent of their mass above the sea surface. They are formed by glaciers—large rivers of ice that begin inland in the snows of Greenland, Antarctica, and Alaska—and move slowly toward the sea. The forward movement, the melting at the base of the glacier where it meets the ocean, and waves and tidal action cause blocks of ice to break off and float out to sea.

Directions: Mark your answer by filling in the oval next to your choice.

1. According to paragraph 1, all of the following are true of icebergs EXCEPT:

_ They do not have a regular shape.

_ They are formed where glaciers meet the ocean.

_ Most of their mass is above the sea surface.

_ Waves and tides cause them to break off glaciers.

Icebergs are ordinarily blue to white, although they sometimes appear dark or opaque because they carry gravel and bits of rock. They may change color with changing light conditions and cloud cover, glowing pink or gold in the morning or evening light, but this color change is generally related to the low angle of the Sun above the horizon. However, travelers to Antarctica have repeatedly reported seeing green icebergs in the Weddell Sea and, more commonly, close to the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica.

2. According to paragraph 2, what causes icebergs to sometimes appear dark

or opaque?

_ A heavy cloud cover

_ The presence of gravel or bits of rock

_ The low angle of the Sun above the horizon

_ The presence of large cracks in their surface

One explanation for green icebergs attributes their color to an optical illusion when

blue ice is illuminated by a near-horizon red Sun, but green icebergs stand out among white and blue icebergs under a great variety of light conditions. Another suggestion

is that the color might be related to ice with high levels of metallic compounds, including

copper and iron. Recent expeditions have taken ice samples from green icebergs and ice cores—vertical, cylindrical ice samples reaching down to great depths—from the glacial ice shelves along the Antarctic continent. Analyses of these cores and samples provide a different solution to the problem.

3. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage? Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.

_ One explanation notes that green icebergs stand out among other icebergs under a great variety of light conditions, but this is attributed to an optical illusion.

_ One explanation for the color of green icebergs attributes their color to an optical illusion that occurs when the light from a near-horizon red Sun shines on a blue iceberg.

_ One explanation for green icebergs attributes their color to a great variety of light conditions, but green icebergs stand out best among other icebergs when illuminated by a near-horizon red Sun.

_ One explanation attributes the color of green icebergs to an optical illusion under special light conditions, but green icebergs appear distinct from other icebergs under a great variety of light conditions.

Part Reading Comprehension (15 minutes) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passages followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general. The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition(营养不良) and heat-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions. Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030. Roger Pielke Jr., a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable(易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed(有瑕疵的).” However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report. 1. What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum? A) Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming. B) Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development. C) Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries. D) Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters. 2. What do we learn about the Forum’s report from the passage? A) It caused a big stir in developing countries.

I got stuck in writing the paper on bird migration. I have difficulties in finding enough materials about bird migration. Professor: You can’t find enough material on bird migration?(语调上扬,最后一题,重听题的考点。) 男student: I want to write about early bird migration.( 要写的paper是关于古代鸟类迁徙的,所以资料不够。)

Professor: I want you to apply what you’ve learned to your paper.

精听材料有很多,推荐SSS(Scientific American’s Sixty-second Science),它非常短,但信息量很大,更重要的是,它是新托福听力出题的重要来源。 我认为泛听的材料有两个:一个是National Geographic(国家地理频道),另一个是Discovery(探索)。

I want to write about the birds that do not migrate. They hibernate during winter. (If I were you , I would not….. The paper is 15 pages…) Why does the student go to see the professor? 答案:C(3)he cannot find enough material in writing his paper. How does the professor help the student? 答案:A(1)change the topic from ancient to recent ANALYSIS 2. Why does the student mention night migration ? 答案:A (1) 通过说这个topic来验证自己理解了老师的意图he understands what the teacher said. change the topic from ancient to recent. 问题五:listen again(女Professor说的:啊,你没找到鸟类迁徙的资料?) What is the main topic of this lecture?
