Almost two years ago, I stood on a dormitory balcony, joined hands with my three closest friends and listened to one of them tell a story about four girls with different backgrounds and gifts who left home and went to college at a place called Happy Valley.

After we left our friend’s apartment that last night of our frehman year, we ended up on the lawn, playing frisbee and sitting on the dormitory steps talking for hours. Alisa, Karen, Gabriolle and I had spent that day together just being freshmen---going to the sandwich shop for the last lunch of the term, trying on each other’s clothes, watching movies and acting like we would never see each other again. For freshmen, and especially for us, saying goodbye at the end of the first year can feel like saying goodbye forever.

My advice to any freshmen is to cherish those moments. You may grow completely apart from the people you spent your first year with. Even if you have almost forgotten

your freshman year roommates two years later, you can never replace that year and the completely new feeling that your first year of college brings. We learned more outside the classroom than we learned inside it. That dormitory is where we learned the lessons of our freshman years. I think the main lesson I learned was what true friendship is.

The story Alisa told on that balcony is far from over. I sometimes wonder if the following is how it will end:

“...and those four little girls grew up and realized their dreams. They found themselves all over the country, from farms, to cities, doing everything they wanted to do---a computer technician, a physician, a lawyer, and an architect. And occasionally they would make it back to reunions at that valley and see their friends, laughing about the good times.”

24. Why did the author stand on a dormitory balcony?

A. To read a storybook.

B. To play frisbee with her friends.

C. To enjoy the view of Happy Valley.

D. To listen to a story told by her friend.

25. What does the second paragraph mainly focus on?

A. A school party.

B. Four girls’ daily life.

C. A common scene described in Happy Valley.

D. The last day four girls spent in their freshman year.

26. What suggestion does the author give to other freshmen?

A. Sharing personal stories with their close friends.

B. Treasuring unforgettable moments they have made.

C. Remembering to help their close friends whatever they are.

D. Inviting their close friends to attend their graduation ceremonies.

27. What does the end of the story suggest?

A. Every dog has its day.

B. True friendship lasts forever.

C. A friend in need in a friend indeed.

D. There are many passers-by in one’s life.

C

My son is doing an MA(Master of Arts) in music, so for his final project, he decided to explore the role of fantasy in society. He emailed home for help. “Naturally we all love escapism,”he wrote, “but the important question is why? You’re a fantasy writer, Mum, got any ideas?”

This is what I came up with: Fantasy is important for the human mind. It begins as the psychological process by which a child learns to fill the space between knowledge, reality and experience.

When we were small children, trying to get to sleep, a creaking(嘎吱响的) floorboard was really frightening. Who or what could be making the noise? The only way to make sense of the experience was to fantasise: there is probably a tiger under the bed.

Children frighten themselves silly like this, but while they have no knowledge of central heating pipes swelling(管道膨胀), they have to use make-believe to fill the space between experience and knowledge. As time passes and children learn about the effect of heat on pipes and floorboards, they will often prefer the tiger story. Fear, within a safe environment, is fun.

As they grow, children need stories that include war, falling in love, becoming a hero and saving the world. They provide a framework(框架) within which developing emotions can awaken, ready for “real life” when it hits.

Louis Sachar’s Holes is a great modern explanation of this, but the best ones are those we make up for ourselves. A friend who is a child psychologist was treating a boy who’d been mistreated by a relative. The child loved this person, and was puzzled and hurt by what had happened, so my friend wrote him a story about a baby rabbit that loved his uncle, a wolf. One day, the wolf hurt him. The rabbit remembered the love, but he also understood that wolves were dangerous, and had to be avoided. The child went away with the tools to reconcile(和解) the irreconcilable.

Taking one step away from reality to that “safe” place of pretend prepares us to look the world’s hard realities in the face.

28. Which question puzzled the author’s son?

A.Do people love escapism?

B. Why is fantasy so important?

C. Is escapism good for people?

D. What is the purpose of fantasy music?

29. How can fantasies about creaking floorboards benefit children?

A. By helping them to get to sleep quickly.

B. By encouraging them to find out the truth.

C. By helping them to overcome fear on their own.

D. By allowing them to explore their feelings in a safe way.

30. Which of the following about fantasy would the author agree with?

A. It frees kids of concerns.

B. It makes people emotional.

C. It helps people spot danger.

D. It prepares kids for real life.

31. How did the child psychologist’s make-up story turn out?

A. It worked well.

B. It confused the child.

C. It made the relative apologise.

D. It became more popular than Holes.

D

New artificial intelligence(AI)(人工智能) software is being used in Japan to monitor the body language of shoppers and look for signs that they are planning to shoplift. The software, VaakEye, which is made by a Tokyo startup called Vaak, uses behavior to predict shoplifting action. Company founder Ryo Tanaka said his team trained it to monitor everything from the facial expressions of shoppers to their movements and clothing.

Vaak says that shoplifting losses dropped by 77% during a test period in local convenience stores and VaakEye has since been rolled out in 50 stores across Japan.

Using AI to catch thieves raises all kinds of questions, however.

“While the goal is to prevent theft, is it legal to prevent someone from entering a store based on this software?” said Michelle Grant from Euromonitor.

“What we provide is information. We don’t decide who is a shoplifter; the shop decides who’s a shoplifter,” said Tanaka.

Yet that is what concerns the human rights charity Liberty, which is campaigning to ban facial recognition technology in the United Kingdom. Liberty is also worried that AI will raise discrimination(歧视).

“With technologies that rely on particular human behavior---the possibility of discrimination is always there,” said Hannah Couchman, Liberty’s policy officer.

“Are people aware of what’s happening?”asked Couchman. “What do they think about it? What happens to the data? How is it protected? Might it be shared?”

Grant said consumers are willing to sacrifice some privacy for convenience---such as using face recognition for payment---but only when they’re aware of what the technology is being used.

“There is a need for guidance from regulators and lawmakers who will finally need to decide in what situations the use of this technology will be proper,” said Christopher Eastham, a specialist in AI at the law firm Fieldfisher.

32. What can we learn about VaakEye?

A. It fails to make a difference.

B. It is banned in Tokyo.

C. It can help recognize shoplifters.

D. It is warmly welcomed by customers.

33. What is Michelle Grant’s attitude toward VaakEye?

A. Doubtful.

B. Supportive.

C. Unconcerned.

D. Disappointed.

34. What is Liberty’s concern about VaakEye?

A. It may make mistakes.

B. It may create unfairness.

C. It may result in more shoplifting.

D. It may dissatisfy customers’ needs.

35. What does Christopher Eastham say about VaakEye?

A. It needs to be improved.

B. It disturbs customers’ privacy.

C. It should be regulated by laws.

D. It is convenient for shopkeepers.

Dear Emma,

I’m sorry to hear about your situation and I’d like to give you some advice.

Being misunderstood is rather painful and I quite understand you. If I were you, I’d keep silent without giving any explanation at first, because sometimes explaining

only makes things worse. If you want to explain, wait until you’ve both cooled down.

I think true friends will believe you and finally realize that you were misunderstood and apologize to you. Do believe me when I tell you that time will help.

I hope my advice works.
