Population involved in different kinds of work in Britain

Now, three hundred years ago, ninety percent of the population in Britain were involved in agriculture, the production of food. A hundred and seventy years ago at the beginning of the industrial revolution in Britain, thirty-three percent of the population were involved in agriculture. Thirty-three percent at the beginning of the industrial revolution were involved in industrial production and a further thirty-three percent were involved in services, white-collared workers we'd call them today. D: Well, it's about a twenty-minute drive from the surgery. Place called Stamford. S: Are you the only doctor or are there…?

D: Yes, the surgery's pleasant and I enjoy getting to know people, although I spend on average only about eight minutes with each patient.

D: Naturally there are disadvantages, such as irregular working hours and the effect they have on family life but the best things for me are the thanks I get from people for the help I give them… and the variety. It's certainly never boring being a doctor!
