第四部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

In 1990, 22-year-old Christopher McCandless gave up his career plans, left behind everyone he knew, donated all his savings to charity(慈善机构), and went off on an adventure, hiking his way through America to Alaska.

Of course, this is an unusual story. Most college graduates would not do so. However, studies show that in teenage years, people are more likely to try out new experiences. For example, instead of working his way up the same organization like his grandfather did, a 15-year-old may dream about becoming a traveller — only to find in his early 20s that this attraction of new places is fading and change is less attractive.

The reason why people become less keen to change as they get older maybe that people generally have similar life patterns and demands. Most people aim to find a job and a partner. As they get older, they may have young children and elderly family members to look after. These responsibilities cannot be achieved without some degree of steadiness, which means that new experiences and ideas may not have a place in the person’s life. New experiences may bring excitement as well as insecurity, and so most people prefer to stay with the familiar.

However, not every individual is the same. A child may want to play a different game every day and get fed up if nothing changes at the kindergarten. Another may play with the same children and toys on every visit. Young children who avoid ne w experiences will grow up to be more traditional than others. Psychologist(心理学家)argue that those who have more open personalities as children are more open than others might be when they are older and that young men have a greater interest in novelty than women, although as they age, this desire for new experiences fades more quickly than it does in women.

56. The first paragraph serves as a(n)___________.

A. explanation

B. introduction

C. comment

D. background

B. a teenager is not interested in a new start before graduation

C. women are more likely to try new things than men of the same age

D. a child who likes different games ma y not like to change after growing up

A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to visit their old university

professor.Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitch en and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups-porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some exquisite and expensive-telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups...And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live.Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."

God brews the coffee, not the cups.Enjoy your coffee!

Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage (遗产)Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist (薄雾), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries (美术馆)than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, madding the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub (酒馆). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of ―outstanding universal value‖. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

The displays(表现)of bad temper(脾气)are nothing new in kindergarten and first grade, but the behavior of a 6-year-old girl this fall at a school in Fort Worth, Texas, had even the most experienced staff members wanting to run for cover. Asked to put a toy away, the youngster began to scream. Told to calm down, she knocked over her desk and crawled(爬行)under the teacher’s desk, kicking it and throwing out the contents of the drawers. Then things really began to worsen. Still screaming, the child stood up and began casting books at her terrified classmates, who had to be accompanied to safety.

Just a bad day at school? More like a bad season. The desk-throwing incident followed scores of other crazy acts by some of the youngest Fort Worth students at schools across the district, and even the country. There have been an increasing number of kindergartners and first-graders with violent behavior and it has become an alarming trend.

The youngest school kids are acting out in really ridiculous ways and violence is getting younger and younger. Why? Educators and psychologist argue that they are witnessing the result of a number of social trends that have come together in a most unfortunate way. Many mention economic(经济的)stress, which has parents working longer hours than ever before, kids spending more time in day care and everyone coming home too tired to engage in the kind of relationships that build social ski lls. In addition, many educators worry about rising academic pressure in kindergarten and first grade as the students have to take the yearly tests demanded by the No Child Left Behind Act. They believe that even more important than early reading is the learning of play skills. Other experts also point out that violent behavior in children has been closely linked to exposure to violence on TV and in movies, video games and other media. They insist schools try to teach kids what they have failed to learn at home, for example, having varieties of anti-violence and character-education programs, instructing children to interact with people who love them and teaching them how to behave.

A. detailed examples

B. scientific analysis

C. satisfactory evidence

D. rich imagination

73. The second paragraph tells us that .

b. academic pressure

c. lack of interaction with parents
