一、阅读理解

A

When young Nerino was made chief of the tribe, everyone expected that—as was the custom on the island—he would direct his attention to fighting the great fiery-eyed beast, a horrible creature that had scared the tribespeople for centuries. Nerino had promised to kill the beast and, though he was a good fighter, he seemed no better than the others who had previously lost their lives in the attempt. The tribe reckoned that, as chief, he wouldn?t last much more than a year. However, nothing was done. Nerino didn?t train any fighters. When summer came—the time the monster attacked most frequently, engulfing(吞没) all in flames from his fiery eyes—all the tribe did was moving their village.

Everyone looked worryingly and insistently at Nerino. They demanded that he fight, that he do something. But Nerino simply said: “I shall defeat the beast, but now it is not the time.” And so the years passed by, and Nerino became an old man. And though they respected him as their chief, and his strategy of moving their village around the island had saved many lives, all the people believed he was a coward(胆小鬼).

Yet, just when no one expected it, Nerino finally called together a group of fighters. He announced this suddenly, without warning, on a cold winter night. Snow was rare on the island, but now it blanketed the ground, and the band of warriors(武士) had to march out barefoot, with frozen feet. They hurriedly climbed the volcano and, at the summit, they approached the monster?s cave. Nerino confidently entered, while his companions performed the usual death preparation practice, ready to leave this life…When they were all inside the cave they saw old Nerino standing over the beast. The monster was lying, curled up, on the ground, trembling and groaning, close to death. Nerino and his warriors easily took the creature prisoner.

On arriving back at the village, everyone wanted to hear about Nerino?s fight with the monster. Nerino began telling his story: “I never intended to fight against something so terrifying, and nor did I do so today. Did none of you notice that the beast would never attack during the worst days of winter? Or that, after an especially cold period, his fire was never very strong, nor his attacks very damaging? For many years I was waiting for a snow as heavy as this one. All along, we didn?t need fighters; we needed the cold.”

And so patience can be much more useful than action, even if it means you require the bravery to accept people treating you like a coward.

Since the beginning of history, man has been attracted by the idea of living forever, of winning the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what the best way would be.

It has long been known that meat of fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing: in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans.

However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals(晶体), which not only are larger than the volume(体积) of the water originally in the cells, but also from sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells.

In the 1940s Dr B.J. Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them.

Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin(丙三醇). Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen. Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperatures.

Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature far below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured.

The decline in moral standards—which has long concerned social analysts—has at last caught the attention of average Americans. And Jean Bethke Elshtain, for one, is glad.

The fact that the ordinary citizens are now starting to think seriously about the nation?s moral climate, says this ethics(伦理学) professor at the University of Chicago, is reason to hope that new ideas will come forward to improve it.

But the challenge is not to be thought lowly of. Materialism and individualism in American society are the biggest barriers. “The thought that …I?m in it for me? has become deeply rooted in the national consciousness,” Ms Elshtain says.

Some of this can be said to be a result of the break-up of traditional communities(社区), in which neighbors looked out for one another, she says. With today?s great mobility and with so many couples working, those bonds have been weakened, replaced by a greater stress on self.

In a questionnaire carried out among Americans in 1996, loss of morality topped the list of the biggest problems facing the US and Elshtain says the public is correct to sense that: Data shows that Americans are struggling with problems unheard of in the 1950s, such as classroom violence and a high rate of births to unmarried mothers.

The desire for a higher moral standard is not a lament(挽歌) for some nonexistent “golden age”, Elshtain says, nor is it a wishful longing for a time that denied opportunities to women and minorities. Most people, in fact, favor the lessening of prejudice.

“Moral decline will not be stopped until people find ways to resist the materialism in society,”she says. “Slowly, you recognize that the things that matters are those that can?t be bought.”

36. Professor Elshtain is pleased to see that Americans .

A. have adapted to a new set of moral standards

B. are longing for the return of the good old days

C. have realized the importance of material things

D. are aware of the lowering of their moral standards

37. The moral decline of American society is caused mainly by .

A. its rapidly growing wealth

B. the self-centeredness of individuals

C. the prejudice against women and minorities

D. thinking lowly of the influence of social changes

38. Which of the following characterizes the traditional communities?

A. Great mobility.

B. Stress on individual effort.

C. Concern for one?s neighbors.

D. Ever-weakening social bonds.

39. In the 1950s, classroom violence .

A. was something unheard of

B. attracted a lot of public attention

C. began to appear in analysts? data

D. was by no means a rare occurrence

40. According to Elshtain, the present moral decline may be provented .

A. when women and men enjoy equal rights

B. when people rid themselves of prejudice

C. if people can return to the “golden age”

D. if less stress is laid on material things

Bruce Alberts, the former President of the National Academies (USA), has now taken over as Editor-in-Chief of Science. Judging by his editorial in this week?s issue[Considering Science Education]there could by some interesting times ahead in the Science offeces.

Here?s part of what Bruce has to say about science education…

I consider science education to be critically important to both science and the world, and I shall frequently address this topic on this page. Let?s start with a big-picture view. The scientific enterprise has greatly advanced our understanding of the natural world and has thereby enabled the creation of countless medicines and useful devices. It has also led to behaviors that have improved lives. The public appreciates these practical benefits of science, and science and scientists are generally respected, even by those who are not familiar with how science works or what exactly it has discovered.

But society may less appreciate the advantage of having everyone acquire, as part of their formal education, the ways of thinking and behaving that are central to the practice of successful science: scientific habits of mind. These habits include a skeptical attitude toward established claims and a strong desire for logic and evidence. As famous astronomer Carl Sagan put it, science is our best detector. Individuals and societies clearly need a means to logically test the constant clever attempts to operate our purchasing and political decisions. They also need to challenge what is unreasonable, including the intolerance that led to so many regional and global conflicts.

So how does this relate to science education? Might it be possible to encourage, across the world, scientific habits of mind, so as to create more rational(理性的) societies everywhere? In principle, a major push of science education could provide the world with such an opportunity, but only if scientists, educators, and policy-makers redefine the goals of science education, beginning with college-level teaching. Rather than only conveying what science has discovered about the natural world, as is done now in most countries, a top priority should be to provide all students with the knowledge and practice of how to think like a scientist.

41. Which of the following is NOT included in the “scientific habits of mind” according to the passage?

A. A skeptical attitude toward established claims.

B. A strong desire for logic.

C. A strong desire for evidence.

D. A clever and active head.

42. What do the underlined words “such an opportunity” refer to in the last paragraph?

A. To create more rational societies everywhere.

B. To relate decision-making to science education.

C. To encourage science education around the world.

D. To set right goals of science education.

43. In Bruce Alberts? opinion, which is the most important in science education?

A. Offering all students enough practice to drill their mind.

B. Equipping all students with a thinking model of a scientist.

C. Telling students how science improves our life.

D. Advising all students to challenge the scientific achievements.

44. The following information about Bruce Alberts is correct EXCEPT .

A. he is the former President of the National Academies of the United States

B. he is Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Science at present

C. he is satisfied with the science education model in most countries

D. he will often deal with the topic of science education in editorial page of Science

45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Bruce Alberts, a great science educator

B. Science education and world peace

C. The government and science education

D. Bruce Alberts? opinion on Science Education

Three students are being interviewed to give comments on David for his application for Chairman of the Students? Union. David is thought highly of in his classmates? eyes.

I can?t agree more with my classmates. Honestly speaking, it is just because of all his good characters such as being hard-working, helpful and co-operative that he has become so much received by all of us.

I still remember at the beginning of this school year I was in a traffic accident and that required me to be in hospital for over two months. This situation caused me great concern as I feared I would fall far behind my classmates in my study. Thanks to David, he came to visit me every day, and patiently explained to me all the lessons our class had gone through each day. By the time I was well enough to return to school I was up-to-date in all areas of my study.
