As an English teacher, I've been lucky enough to travel to many countries all over the world. I've seen people celebrate everything from the arrival of new babies to the delivery of new cars. I've attended weddings, parties and religious celebrations in countries such as Argentina and Japan, and I've noticed that gold - the metal or the colour of it --- is always part of cultural events, traditions and celebrations.

It makes me wonder: Why do people love gold?

For some people, gold seems to be a status(地位) symbol. Indian businessman Datta Phuge loves gold so much that he's even bought a shirt made of the gold at a cost of $250,000. I'm not sure I'd spend so much money on a shirt, would you? But Datta Phuge has his reasons. He explains: "Some people want to own an Audi or Mercedes. I choose gold."

For other people, gold is an investment. The price of gold generally increases over time and in European markets, it reached even $1,500 per ounce in 2011.

And for many people, a family heirloom(传家宝) brings together status and investment. My mother has a gold bracelet(手镯) that was given to her by her grandmother who, in turn, inherited it from her own grandmother. It's quite a heavy piece and probably worth quite a lot of money. But its mental value is greater than its value in dollars. It's a beautiful object that holds many family memories. When the time comes, my mum will give the bracelet to me, and one day, I'll pass it on to the younger generation.

So, status and investment are good reasons to value gold. But, I think that the real reason why people love gold is that it can be made into beautiful objects. Think about Tutankhamen's death mask. Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?

People love gold because it holds their minds, their imaginations and, above all, their hearts.

A good friend of mine lives about one hour away. I called her last week and found out that she wasn’t doing well at work, which would make the following year a little more challenging. After hanging up the phone, I decided to offer to help her, but I couldn’t think of what to do. However, opportunities present themselves when you’re not even looking for.

A few days later, some friends and I happened to be eating desserts at a restaurant in her city. As we were looking at the menu, I turned to my friend and asked them if they wanted to join in a game. After explaining

the idea, they decided to take 15 minutes to make someone’s day.We ordered an extra dessert, wrote a note, added a smile card and were off. However, there was one problem: I had no idea where she was.

Therefore, it was time to rely on the network. I called up a friend and got him to call her to see what she was doing and found out that she was at work.

We drove to her work place and one of my friends became the delivery(投递) person. He went in to look for my friend, found her, didn’t really answer her questions and walked out, saying he’s simply a delivery person.

He ran out quickly and I bent down as we drove by to make sure she didn’t follow him out. Afterwards, all of u s had this huge smile on our faces. We felt as if we had just planned a surprise party or something.

Latest figures from the National Bat Monitoring Programme showed that fewer of the flying mammals were counted in 2012 than those in the previous year.

The Bat Conservation Trust is concerned that this year’s unseasonable start means that bats are struggling to recover.

During the summer, bat activity reaches its peak. But this year, the animals are faced with the challenges such as a delayed breeding(繁殖)season and a lack of insects on which they feed, according to the Bat Conservation Trust.

“After two years of long and wet winters as well as a particularly late and cold start to summer this year, the prospect(前景) isn’t hopeful for our bats,” said Dr Kate Barlow, head of the National Bat Monitoring Programme.

The latest report from the National Bat Monitoring Programme revealed the level of bat activity recorded in 2012. Bat species---including common ipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, noctule and serotine --- were all lower in number than in2011.

Philip Briggs in Bat Conservation Trust explained that breeding in bats appeared to be delayed last year, probably due to the cold spring and unusually wet summer.

Mr. Briggs predicted that this year, the bats’ breeding season could again have been delayed due to the cold spring, and he added, “I suppose if we continue with the current good weather, which could help improve breeding success and survival throughout the summer, but we’ll just have to see how things go.”

Seventeen species of bats breed in the UK,including the rare Bechstein’s bat, the distinctive-looking brown long-eared bat and the Daubenton’s bat, which is also known as the “water bat”because it catches insects from water surfaces.

Over the past 15 years, the National Bat Monitoring Programme has shown that the population of all the surveyed bat species is increasing.

However, Dr Barlow commented, “All our bats produce only one baby a year, so a few years of bad weather could have great impact on the number of bats if they are unable to find enough food to allow them to breed successfully.”

11.What do we know about the British bats?

A. They usually feed on insects.

B. They choose spring as their breeding season.

C. They produce at least one baby a year,

D. Seventy species of them breed in the UK.

12. Why is the Daubenton’s bat also called the “water bat”?

A. Because it likes drinking water.

B. Because it lives on water surfaces.

C. Because it catches insects from water surfaces.

D. Because it likes playing on water surfaces.

13. Which of the following may NOT influence the bats’ breeding?

A. The cold spring

B. Unusually wet summer.

C. Enough water.

D. A lack of enough food.

14. What’s the attitude of Dr Kate Barhow to the situation the bats will face?

A. Positive.

B. Negative.

C. Unknown

D. Supportive.

15. Where does the passage probably come from?

A. A book review.

B. A business report.

C. A science magazine.

D. An entertainment programme.

The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest organization of physicians in the United States, formally recognized obesity as a disease this month. “The purpose of the policy is to advance obesity treatment and prevention,” wrote AMA president Ardis Dee Hoven. “It calls for a paradigm shift(思维模式转变) in the way the medical

community deals with his difficult issue, so that we can reduce the number of Americans suffering from the effects of heart disease, diabetes, disability and other potentially life-changing health conditions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third American adults are obese. The CDC estimates that obesity also affects 17 percent of children, which is three times as high as the rate one generation ago. An estimate from the PTI International says that about 42 percent of Americans will be obese by 2030 if obesity trends continue.

Dr Lou Aronne, an obesity expert, told CBS News that the AMA’s move would have great impact on legislation(立法机关) in Washington and insurance companies, as insurance policies now generally exclude obesity treatment. While Medicare removed the language saying “Obesity is not a disease” from its coverage manual(手册) in 2004, Medical Part D would still not pay for weight loss drugs.

But not everyone is thrilled with the AMA’s move. Linda Bacon, a nutritionist at the university of California, said, “the AMA just determines that some people are sick based on how they look. What’s next? Will they consider being black as a disease because there are higher rates of cardiovascular disease in bl ack communities?” Meanwhile, Dr Richard Besser, chief health and medical correspondent for ABC News, thought that the whole debate was not so important, “I think it matters little whether we call obesity a disease, a condition or a disorder. We are already talking about the obesity epidemic. It matters less what we call it than what we do to prevent it.”

16. What is the purpose of “recognizing obesity as a disease” policy?

A. To help prevent and treat obesity.

B. To change people’s eating habits

C. To shift the way people think.

D. To get rid of obesity.

17. How is paragraph 2 mainly developed?

A. By following time order.

B. By listing figures.

C. By giving definitions.

D. By giving examples.

18. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A. Some people are against the AMA’s move.

B. The AMA shouldn’t call obesity a disease.

C. It’s not so important to call obesity a disease.

D. Not all people think highly of the AMA’s move.

19. What does Dr Richard Besser value more?

A. Whether we call obesity a disease.

B. That we call obesity a disorder.

C. What we can do to prevent obesity.

D. That we talk about the obesity epidemic.

20. We can learn from the passage that ____.

A. obesity often results in diseases like heart disease, diabetes and disorder.

B. the AMA’s move will not have a big influence on legislation in Washington.

C. Medicare Part D will pay for weight loss drugs after the AMA’s move.

D. the blacks are more likely to have cardiovascular disease.

The kitchen is often a student’s first place for learning about chemical and physical changes in materials. What happens when you mix certain ingredients? Does it matter how much of each ingredient you use in a recipe? How does the cake batter (面糊) change in the oven? Try some of these kitchen science explorations at home with the help of your parents.

Following recipes: Help your parents with much of the preparation, such as pouring, mixing and measuring when appropriate. This may not seem much like science, but the experience contains many elements of science and mathematics. Although the real goal is to create something that tastes good, a recipe is a controlled form of chemistry. Paying close attention to what happens as you add a new ingredient supports the understanding of changes.

Heating: the stove can of course be a dangerous place for children,

but try to find a safe place, such as a chair where you can have a clear view. You can watch some very interesting moments---when your parents pour the raw egg into the pan and its color changes, or when your parents put some pancake batter on a griddle(烤盘) and you notice bubbles(气泡) which can’t be seen previously. Your can describe what you see to your parents.

Melting: So much can be done with ice! Take an ice cube out of the refrigerator. Then put it on a plate and try to find out________. Try to think why it becomes water. Would the same thing happen if the plate was put in a different part of the room or outdoors? What do you think would make the difference? Use a camera to take a photo of the ice cube every 20 minutes or so to document the change.

21. What does the passage mainly talk about? (no more than 5 words)

___________________________________________________________ 22. What kinds of science will be related to the preparation for the recipes? (no more than 4 words)

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________.
