Good evening. Tonight's broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical Western music, Indian music, pop and a Negro spiritual(黑人灵歌). In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music says what people feel. You will hear a Beethoven piano piece, a composition for the sitar(西他,一种弦乐器),and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music.

The feeling in each of these 4 musical compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. The word 'music' comes from the Greek

word 'Muse'. The Muses were goddesses of the arts. Music is only one of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. In the spiritual and the pop song you will hear voices. The words are part of the musical composition. In the other pieces you will hear only the piano or the sitar. Music isnow heard everywhere, in shops and buses and at home. We shall be trying to findout more about how music works. It is worth making the effort. Only then can wesay why one piece of music is good and another bad.

A. include a few new kinds of music

B. express all our feelings

C. are from different parts of the world

D. show different kinds of feelings

B. after these musical compositions are explained

C. after we find out what people feel in music

Will today's young people accept discipline(纪律)? They will if they see examplesof the good results of it. Is there any difficulty in getting students for medical, lawand engineering schools, pilots for planes and ships? Can you imagine any otherprofessional men who must go through a more rigorous training? Here is a picture of a Marine recruit's (海军陆战队新兵) life for six or moremonths. He comes to a camp. His hair is cut short. His new clothes are thrown athim. He is called a girl, and he gets hundreds of orders daily. He is punishedfrequently; he may never give any excuses. He gets up at six in the morning, exercises for an hour, eats, makes his bed, cleans up, polishes his rifle(步枪) and if a bit of dust is found on it, he may have to polish it a dozen more times or sweep thefloor with a toothbrush. And then his day begins with duties, drills and details, continuing without a break till at 10 p.m. He falls tired into his bed.

Does he love doing these things? No, he hates them. Why does he do them?Because he knows that after he has finished training he will belong to the best groupof soldiers in the world. Behind all the strict discipline he knows there is a reason. He is being prepared for any job he may be called upon to do with the least possibledanger to life.

What young people have always needed is more discipline, not less, andexamples and reasons why they should bear a hard and rough life.

While the artificial(人造的) hand is considerably less useful than the natural one, there may be some jobs that it can do more efficiently. From time to time we have todo rather difficult jobs and feel that one of our fingers is getting in the way. It ispossible that on these occasions a specially designed artificial hand would be moreefficient.

Scientists in the United States are studying ways of increasing the power of the human hand, or rather of its muscles. Known as a "man-amplifier", a machineunder development at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, consists of a framework orsuit which the operator wears. Every movement he makes is repeated by the steelframework he is wearing, but the power which moves the parts of the frame comesfrom hydraulic(液压的) motors.

If the operator bends down to pick something up, the work is done not by hisown weak muscles but by the hydraulic motors which make it possible for him to lift450 kilograms in each hand.

Another machine called a "HandiMan" has two arms and hands which repeatevery movement of the operator's arms and hands, but with much more strength. The arms and hands on this machine also feed back to the operator information aboutthe work they are doing and the difficulties they meet, so that he can adjust(调节) hiscontrol accordingly.

In these devices the operator controls the movements directly- they are anextension of his own movements. But just as the operations of a distant unmannedspaceship circling the moon can be controlled by radio signals, so also such devices, properly designed, could be radio-controlled. An astronaut exploring an unknownplanet could send out a robot which would do the job for him and send backinformation. Will the day ever come when the machine, more powerful than man andcontrolled by a computer brain, takes over from its human inventor?

63. The passage is mainly about ___.

A. the weakness of the human hand

B. the power and strength of the artificial hand

C. the wide use of robots in many fields

D. the operation of the artificial hand in space exploration

64. According to the passage, the artificial hand is ___.

A. widely used for it has proved better than the natural hand

B. slower in doing some rather difficult jobs

C. operated by a strong man or otherwise by a computer

D. being tried and tested to help people in some ways

65. How many times would it take an operator wearing a "man-amplifier' to carry 2,500 kilograms ?

A. Three.

B. Four.

C. Five.

D. Six.

66. The advantage of a "HandiMan" over a "man-amplifier" mentioned in the passage

is ___.

A. the operator knows how the work is going on

B, it can work with more strength and pick up more weight

C. the machine is more powerful and easier to operate

D. repeat every movement of the operator

67. The writer of this passage believes that ____.

A. artificial hands can replace natural ones in certain jobs

B. man seems powerless in comparison with machines

C. natural hands cannot compare with artificial ones in modern times

D. machines will finally get the better of their human inventors

Ladies and gentlemen:

I'm Li Hua. Today, I'm greatly honored to speak here on behalf of my school. I'm going to talk about the high school education of my city.

From Chart 1, we can see high school students are from different family backgrounds. Besides local students, who make up 91 percent, eight percent of the students are the children of non-local workers. There are even 1 percent foreign students.

According to chart 2, the students' choices after graduation have presented a wider variety. Sixty percent of them intend to go to university. Thirty percent choose to enter vocational schools, and the rest ten percent plan to go abroad for further studies.

(1) I think we have more freedom to choose what we would like to do after graduation. Going to college is no longer the only choice for most of us as it was years ago.

(2) I think our city government has made more efforts to help the non-local workers. For example, their children can enjoy the equal right of a good education with the city students.

(3) I think with the economic development of our city, more foreigners are attracted to set up businesses here and they are happy to send their children to local schools to learn more about China and Chinese culture.

I believe the future of the education in our city is promising!

That's all. Thank you.

"We could bring some of our own toys for the children in the hospital, "said the boys and the girls one after another. "Well, your ideas would be nice, "Mrs. Weeks said,"but mine is different." "We could make some toys, "shouted one of them. Mrs. Weeks smiled. "Do you think you could make toys?" she asked. "Yes, yes, "the whole class answered. "Great! Let's begin to make toys tomorrow, "said Mrs. Weeks. On Saturday afternoon,Mrs. Weeks took the children to the hospital with the toys made by her students. The children in the hospital felt very happy to see the toys. So did the children in the class. A few days later,Mrs. Weeks read another newspaper story to the class: Some school pupils brought toys to Children's Hospital last week. The toys were made by the pupils of Grade Three in Green Street School. The doctors said,"We have never had so many wonderful toys. Our children are very happy with them. Hostels Cheap, good-value hostels are aimed at all types of like-minded travelers, who prefer value over luxury and you don't have to be young or single to use them. Britain's independent hostels and backpackers hostels also offer a great welcome. Facilities and prices vary, especially in rural areas, where some hostels are a little more than a bunkhouse (临时住房) while others are remarkably comfortable -almost like bargain hotels. Youth Hotels Founded many years ago to "help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside", the Youth Hotels Association is still going strong in the 21st century. The network of 230 hotels is a perfect gateway for exploring Britain's towns and countryside. B&Bs The B&B (bed and breakfast) is a Great British institution, In essence you get a room in somebody's house, and small B&Bs may only have one guest room, so you'll really feel like part of the family. Larger B&Bs may have four or five rooms and more facilities, but just as warm as a welcome. In country areas your B&B might be in a village or an isolated farm surrounded by fields. Prices reflect facilities: and usually run from around £12 to £20 per person. City B&Bs charge about £25 to £30 per person, although they're often cheaper as you go further out to the suburbs.
