II. Directions: Listen to the passage and fill in the form below with no more than three words for each blank. The passage will be read TWICE.(20 points)

“Neighbor to Neighbor” is a five-month series of neighborhood meetings, sought to get people talking about why Greater Cincinnati is divided by race - and how to bridge the gap. More than 2,100 people from nearly every neighborhood have broken a polite silence to engage in difficult talk on race. They've met in church basements, crowded living rooms and school libraries. They've shed tears over personal stories. They've stumbled through their differences to reflect on what they share.
Personal responsibility topped many neighborhood lists. But as they discovered common ground, neighbors formed other ideas for improving race relations:
School leaders should insist on diversity in the curriculum and teach respect for racial differences.
Politicians and public servants should spend more time and money to rebuild neighborhoods and less to create riverfront showpieces.
Community leaders should work to mend police-community relations and create more workplace equality.
Churches and other community groups should play a greater leadership role.
“We have a lot of opinions, but the solution c omes down to, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,'” says Janet Metzelaar, a Loveland small business owner who helped lead 13 Neighbor to Neighbor meetings across the region.
“If you follow that, it's not just on the street, it's on the job. It's in your homes and in your church. You're always considering how your actions make the person feel - and how what you fail to do make them feel.”

III. Directions: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are True or False. The passage will be read ONL Y ONCE. (20 points)

It's important to be a good citizen wherever you may find yourself, by following the rules of that place. The Internet is a "place" with its own very special rules. People who communicate over the Internet are called "cybercitizens." It's important to learn the rules of the Internet before you log on, so that you can be a "good cybercitizen." The following story describes a situation that you might find yourself in while "surfing" the Internet.
Your friend Mike brags that he can break into any computer there is! He figures out how to get into a computer network, and then he can read anybody's email or even send fake email from someone else's account. He says this is really fun, and he wants you to help him get into the computer at school.
What would you do in this situation?
Do you take Mike to talk with a grown-up that you trust who will help to convince him not to do this? Or help Mike get into the computer system, but stop him from doing any damage? Or help Mike get into the computer system and then play “joke” on people by changing their grades?
Breaking into computers is NOT a game: it's a very serious crime. Mike could be arrested if he did not stop. By telling an adult, and preventing Mike from breaking into the school computers, you have probably saved your school a lot of money, which they can use on other things like new sports equipment, or even new computers.

IV. Directions: Listen to the passage and choose the correct answers to the questions. The passage will be read ONL Y ONCE.(20 points)

When you allow your cat to roam freely outside, you not only expose a beloved companion to potential harm, but you also affect the people and animals in your community. At the very least, your cat may dig in your neighbors' flower beds and leave its wastes in their kids' sandboxes. But free-roaming cats also have far more serious effects.
Local governments spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year controlling stray animals. Although most animal control laws were passed to protect citizens from stray dogs, cats are now a major focus of animal care and control agencies, which collectively shelter millions of lost and homeless cats each year and respond to thousands of cat-related complaints.
Cats, who roam, particularly after dark, are likely to come into contact with night creatures that are the primary transmitters of rabies, which is an infectious disease causing madness in dogs, wolves and other animals in the wild. As a result, cats are now the most common domestic transmitters of rabies, with 278 cases reported in the United States in 1999.
Free-roaming cats kill millions of wild animals each year. Well-fed housecats kill wildlife because of their instinct to hunt prey, not because they need the food. Cats are not a part of natural ecosystems, and their hunting and killing causes unnecessary death to wild animals. This can cause conflicts among neighbors, pitting gardeners and bird lovers against cat owners who allow their charges to roam.
1. Which of the following is not the effect of a free-roaming cat?

V. Directions: Listen to the passage TWICE and fill the blanks with the missing words.(20 points)

Like the medical ethic emphasizing that the first responsibility of a physician is “to do no harm,” being a good global neighbor means ending bad neighbor behavior. The warning “to do no harm” applies to the foreign policies of all nations, but it is especially relevant to great powers like the United States that have a global reach and a history of bad neighbor practices.
The Roosevelt administration went a long way toward becoming a good global neighbor. It ended U.S. military interventions and occupations as well as stopped Dollar Diplomacy and Gunboat Diplomacy. At home, it actively sought to get rid of the attitudes of racism, moral superiority, and cultural chauvinism. These attitudes had been cultivated during the previous period of open imperialism.
The basic rules of peaceful coexistence and community are the same, locally and globally. Bad neighbors use greater power and wealth to threat others. They apply a double standard to their behavior and to that of their neighbors, setting themselves apart from their community. Good neighbors do not tell others how to live their lives.

Instead, they respect differences and diversity in the neighborhood.
The United States is currently reviving some of its worst bad neighbor practices. It invades and occupies Iraq, renounces membership in the International Criminal Court, involves itself in V enezuela’s internal affairs, supports armed conflict in Colombia, backs fundamentalists in Israel, and reinforces trade and travel barriers toward Cuba. All these are policies of a bad global neighbor.

新视野听力原文及答案

UNIT 5 VI. Further Listening and Speaking Task1: Hot Business Ideas Business ideas are all around you. Many business ideas come from a careful analysis of market and consumer needs. If you are interested in starting a business, but don’t know what product or service you might sell, here are some ways that may help you find one. First of all, you should study how to value to an existing product. The difference raw wood and finished wooden products is a good example of putting a product through an additional process that increases its value. But additional processes are not the only way value can be added. You might also add services, or combine one product with other products. For instance, a local farm which sells produce can also offer a vegetable delivery service—for a free. What business ideas can you develop along these lines? Focus on what products you might buy, and what you might do to them or with them to create a profitable business. Some people have another way of making profit. They improve an existing products or service. We all know that the person who can build a better mousetrap will make a lot of money. That person could be you! A local entrepreneur has created an improved version of the hula hoop. It’s bigger and heavier, so hula-hoopers can control it more easily and do more tricks. How did she come up with this business idea? She thought hula hooping would be a fun thing to do with her daughter, but found the commercially available product too flimsy. There are very few products or services that can’t be improved. Start generating business ideas by looking at the products and services you use and brainstorming ideas as to how they could be better. 1. What is the first way the speaker mentions that helps you produce a business idea? 2. Which of the following methods does the speaker NOT mention? 3. Why does the speaker mention the mousetrap? 4. Which of the following is true according to the passage? 5. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? Keys: 1.C 2.B 3.B 4.A 5.D Task 2: What do you know about business? Historically, the term business referred to activities or interests. By extension, the word became, as recently as the 18th century, synonymous with “an individual commercial enterprise”. When referring to activities, the terms business and industry sometimes appear interchangeable. Thus a fisherman might say either that he is in the “fishing business”, which is a bit colloquial or that he works in the “fishing industry”, which sounds somewhat formal. The word “trade” m ay serve as an equivalent of both “business” and “industry”. People establish business in order to perform economic activities. With some exceptions, such as non-profit organizations and institutions of the government, businesses exist to product profit. In other words, the owners and operators of a business have receiving or generating a financial return for their time, effort and capital as one of their main objectives. One can classify businesses in many different ways. In recent years, service businesses have become increasingly popular. They offer intangible products and typically have different, usually smaller, capital requirements than manufacturers. Distributors need smaller funds than manufacturers. Most laws specify the forms that a business can take, and a body of commercial law has been developed for each type. Some common types include partnerships, corporations, also called limited liability companies, and sole ownerships. Task3: An office boy or a billionaire? A jobless man applied for the po sition of “office boy” at Microsoft. The human resource manger interviewed him, and gave him a test: clean the floor. “You are engaged,” he said, “give me your email address, and I’ll send you the application form to fill and tell you when you will start.”The man replied, “I don’t have a computer or an email.”

听力原文及部分答案

P24 Part II.Raising money for buying a car B: Well, good afternoon, Mr. Jackson. J: Good afternoon. I've come to see you to see whether it's possible to ... get an overdraft. I'm ... I want some money. [Yes] I'll tell you quite frankly what it is. I'm wanting to buy a new car. [Yes] I don't know whether it's possible to raise any money from the bank in this way. B: Er, I see no reason why not. J: I've got an old car ... B: What's your proposition? J: Well, I've got this old car which is an eight-year-old Morris 1000, and I don't think there's any point in having it repaired any more because it just isn't worth it. I feel that I could probably get about a hundred pounds for it and then that means that I would need about another four hundred-odd, three hundred and fifty ... [Mhm] er, on top of that, to buy a, a, not a new car exactly, but a newer one. [Mhm] Um, ... B: Do you use the car for your business, for your work? J: Er; yes I do, up to a point. That is to say, sometimes I take it to work and sometimes I don't, because I'm almost within walking distance of the College. [Mhm] Does this have some bearing on the, on the question of whether I can get an overdraft? B: No, I don't think so. I, er, it was just a matter of interest that I asked you, really. You think three hundred and fifty? J: I would say about three hundred and fifty to four hundred. With the other, with the other [Yes] hundred pounds then it would be about, er, five hundred pounds; well, one can get quite a decent car for five hundred pounds [Quite] — second hand, of course. B: Quite. And what sort of period of time could you repay us? J: Well, erm, this rather depends on you. Um, I would like to ... I, er, what is the normal procedure for such a sum of money? B: Well, for such a sum of money we could expect repayment within twenty-four months. J: Two years. B: Two years. J: I see. B: We are lenders in the short term, remember, not long term. J: Yes. Er, is there ... Do you, do I pay interest on this? B: You will pay interest on — well, the type of loan I have in mind is a Personal Loan, as I assume you've got no form of collateral to offer.
