All people need to feel appreciated, useful and important. It is a basic, simple need of all people. Encouragement is necessary for humans to develop and work hard. It is like a force that helps people keep going. Here is a story of a simple note of praise. This note helped many people understand the importance of giving praise to other people.

Robert Brooks is a director of psychology. He helps people understand their own behaviour. He also studies why people act the way they do in some situations. He remembers the time when he was just a young man. He was in training to be a psychologist. He had to give a speech in front of a large group of people. And, he was very uneasy. He did not like speaking in front of people. And, his speech was very important.

Robert gave his speech. He did a good job. But, he did not have the chance to hear what other people thought. Later that same day Robert looked into his mail box and found a small note there. The note simply said, “You did a great job today, Robert.” Robert was very surprised and happy to see the note. It made him feel very good. And, Robert believes that that small note helped him through the rest of his training. He felt like he was able to do a good job.

Robert finished his training. Now, as a psychologist, he teaches the importance of giving praise to other people. He tells them the story of the simple note that he received. And he tells them that the

words on the note had power. Those words helped him to continue doing a good job. One day, a businessman, who listened to Robert, decided to take Robert’s ideas to heart. He decided to start giving praise to people who worked for him. And, an amazing thing began to happen to his business.

That’s right! The more that this businessman encouraged his workers, the happier they were. The atmosphere in his business changed. People enjoyed working. They began to encourage each other too. The businessman said, “People seemed happi er. I was more at ease. And giving out praise spread! It was clear that members of the office were praising each other more. The Asian Games—a kind of mini-Olympics for the world’s most populous region—are a showcase of the best athletes Asia has to offer. They are also a showcase of some sports so obscure outside their homelands that they are giving even Asia a touch of culture shock.

To say the least.

Sepak takraw, played primarily in Thailand and Malaysia, is like volleyball, but with a no-hands rule. Three players cover the court, which is divided by an eye-height net. They play with their feet. And they can also use their heads, shoulders and chests to touch the ball. The game dates back some 500 years, when the object was just to keep a ball in the air as long as possible. Later on, a net was added and a set of formal rules were established in 1960. It’s now one of the Asian Games, but Thailand still generally wins.

Kabaddi is played between two seven-member teams on a court with a line drawn down the middle. A “raider”(攻击者) from one team is sent to the opposing half, all the while shouting “kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi” on one breath. Raiders score points by touching players from the opposing team and getting back into his own half. If the catchers manage to prevent the raider from returning to his side of the court, their team gets the point. Because it is cheap and easy to play, kabaddi is popular in rural parts of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Though it remains something oddity to everyone else, the Indians take their kabaddi very, very seriously—and they have won all the gold medals since the sport was introduced at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing.

The martial art(wushu) is China's contribution to the Games. The most artistic of the fighting sports, wushu focuses on “taolu,” elaborate set routines, with or without weapons like spears and swords. Wushu this year is joined by Japan's karate(空手道) at the Games. It is said that China wants to follow the Japanese and South Korean example by pushing wushu as an exhibition sport when it hosts the Olympics in 2008.The Asian Games are a good stepping stone.

From graduate schoo l to a career as an assistant professor, Longo’s ideas were questioned by many people as he explored a new way to look at aging that directly opposes principles set forth by Darwin in his theory of natural selection.

It has long been accepted that natural selection happens on the individual level: the better suited an organism(有机体) is to its environment, the more likely it is to reproduce(繁殖). Longo’s theory, in contrast, depends on a process called “group selection,” believed by most scientists to be wrong because it proposes that selection happens at the group level rather than the individual. He also rejects the commonly accepted theory that aging happens by chance and that, like a car, an organism runs well until it starts to breaks down and eventually just stops working.

In research published in the Sept. 27 edition of the Journal of Cell Biology, Longo proposes that aging is programmed so that the majority of a population dies prematurely to provide nutrients for the sake of a few individuals who have acquired the genetic mutations(基因变异) that increase their chances of reproduction.

The research is based on observations of programmed aging in baker’s yeast(酵母粉) by Longo and co-author Paola Fabrizio. “The organisms we have studied die long before they ha ve to so that a few better-adapted individuals can grow.” What is even more striking, he said, is that the findings raise the possibility that the same process happens in humans, with many of us dying before we have to.

Longo said he realizes that this theory goes against the theories of evolution, which is why he took 10 years to publish, combing through scientific papers dating back to the 1870s to learn about the theory of natural selection and speaking with outstanding evolutionary biologists about his ideas. “I wanted them to tell me, ‘No, you’re wrong and here’s why.’I never got that,” he said. Longo said there are many questions that have yet to be answered through theoretical studies and a closer look at aging in humans.

76. According to Darwin, what kind of individuals are most likely to survive?

A. Those who are the strongest.

B. Those who are the most adaptable.

C. Those who are eager to change.

D. Those who have the best nutrition.

77. Most of the scientists think Longo’s theory______.

A. acceptable

B. progressive

C. possible

D. unreasonable

78. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.Longo believes that selection happens at the group level rather than the individual.

B.Longo believes that aging is a programmed process.

C.It took Longo 10 years to make his theory known to the public.

D.Longo’s findings about the yeast proved his theory to be true.

79. The author wrote this article to ______.

A. introduce a new discovery in science

B. explain what is natural selection

C. prove Darwin’s theory wrong

D. criticize Longo and his theory

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each

find out what life is like in another part of the world! But constantly having to deal with new situations can be frustrating, even stressful. Homesickness, stress, fear, and confusion are all symptoms of

“culture shock.”You may feel frustrated that you have culture shock, especially since you probably spent so much time preparing for your trip. No matter how much information you read, or how well you speak the host language, it is natural to feel overwhelmed sometimes. If you give yourself some time, things will gradually get easier.

81._________ While it’s certainly OK to feel frustration or confusion in your new surroundings, try not to form an opinion about the new culture too soon. You may be quick to judge the food, manners and communication styles and as a result, you may want to do things the way you are used to. If you have this kind of attitude, you will probably avoid some of the very experiences that you came for. Don’t think of the host culture a s better or worse, just different—you'll be more willing to try new things.

82.___________ This is obvious, but everybody needs to be reminded. Just watching life go on around you isn’t good enough—you really need to try things for yourself. Don't worry about making a mistake; people in your host country will generally be very understanding and willing to help if you have questions. If you are unsure of what to do in a formal setting, follow others’ lead.

83.___________ Don’t forget about the organiza tions and people that are there to help you. Colleges and universities generally have offices that concentrate on the needs of international students and their families. Talk to members of your host family or friends that you’ve made there. All of these pe ople will be happy to help. But you must be willing to discuss your concerns with them. You won't offend anyone, so be honest!

84.___________ Talking to someone familiar to you always makes you feel better, and they can encourage you when you're feeling homesick. A good idea is to make plans to call every week on the same day and time. That way, you'll never be disappointed that nobody is home to answer your call, and you’ll have something to look forward to each week. If you’re going to be able to use ema il while you’re abroad, you’ll be able to keep in touch with lots of friends and family very inexpensively!

Part B Passages

Directions: In Part B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

How would you like to play video games all day-and get paid for it? Would you like to get paid to go shopping-and keep what you buy for free? Some people do! The world is full of unusual occupations. But for some people, these crazy careers are their dream jobs. Here are 3 most unusual jobs. Who knows one of them might be just what you are looking for!

Professional Shopper Sometimes called “mystery shoppers,” professional shoppers get to do more than just shop. They eat at restaurants, stay at hotels, or get haircuts. After shopping in a store,

they write a report on the service at the store. By doing this, they help businesses improve their customer service. They need to be responsible and have good writing skills. Their job comes with a special benefit, too. They often get to keep what they buy for free.

Laughter Therapist Laughter therapists teach people to laugh more often and find humor in their everyday lives. You might think this job is unnecessary-everyone knows how to laugh, right? But laughter therapists say most people don’t laugh as much as they should.People who become laughter therapists often have a background in therapy, coaching or medicine.

Video Game Tester If you like to play video games, this could be the job of your dream. Game testers play games to find problems in the software. They need to be talented players. They often play the same game dozens of times to make sure it has no mistakes. (Now listen again) Questions:

11.What is the speaker talking about?

12.What is the special benefit for a professional shopper?

13.Which is NOT included as an unusual career in the article?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

More than 800 million people worldwide live with constant hunger, and 25,000 of them die each day. In the 1970s and 1980s, the number of hungry in poor countries once dropped by 137 million, but the latest estimates show that number rose again by 23 million at the beginning of the new century. Some countries like China, India, Brazil have taken major new steps to reduce hunger. The problem is in the smaller countries, and in much of Africa. Women and children are often the hardest hit. In Africa, there was a severe food crisis in 2005. Severe drought has caused crop failure in Southern Africa. In parts of East Africa, crops and animals have died because of a lack of rain. And in West Africa, poor rains have dried up grassland.

In the West African country, officials say that aid often comes too late. “Each time we wait till a lot of people are getting worse, but each time we could have prevented. Invest at the early stage, and we are sure to save the lives of thousands and thousands of children.”

But cutting hunger in half by the year 2015 is possible. We believe by investing in agriculture, along with better education and health care, poor countries will be able to feed themselves. (Now listen again)

Questions:

76.According to the report, how many people are dying of hunger each day?

77.What caused the food crisis in Africa in 2005 according to the news?

78.Which is NOT mentioned as a way to help the poor countries in the future?

Part C Longer Conversations

Directions: In Part C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: I read about you in the magazine and decided to come and hear you play. I’ve traveled many miles and I’m very glad I made the effort. You played the pia no so beautifully. What are your next plans?

W: I’m going to give 150 concerts. Fortunately people want to come to hear me play, but I’m getting very tired of traveling.

M: Why do you have to work so hard?

W: I’m planning to start a school, so I’m trying to save as much money as possible.

M: What kind of school?

W: A music school for disabled children. I think they have the right to receive education like healthy children. At the moment there are very few such schools in my country, and it will cost a lot of money.

M: But I think a lot of people will support you, and I’m sure your wish will come true. (Now listen again)

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

M: Hey Claire. I have a question to ask you.

W: Yes. Go ahead.

M: Well, I'm thinking about going to Germany this summer, and I need some advice.

W: Why are you going to Germany?

M: Well, don’t laugh, but I met this really nice girl on the Internet. I need some advice. You see, she invited me to spend two weeks in Germany.

W: That’s great. What advice do you need?

M: Well, she's planning to introduce me to her parents.

W: Hey. Sounds kind of serious.

M: Anyway, what should you do when you greet someone for the first time in Germany?

W: Okay. Now if you're meeting someone formally for the first time, you should make sure you arrive on time.

M: Okay, so arrive on time. Uh, what about common greetings?

W: Germans often shake hands, and they use the person’s family name, unless they're really close friends.

M: Okay, what about that girl? Shall I bring something to her?

W: Ah. why don't you take her some flowers?

M: Oh, yes. By the way, do you think I should learn some German?

W: Humm. Honestly, I think you need to take a course in German before you leave. (Now listen again)听力部分到此结束。

Unit12 You are supposed to shake hands. 重点短语词组 应该做某事 be to do sth 握手 访问 by 毕竟 本应该做但没做 have done 餐桌礼仪 table 到达 at/in 有点晚 late 习惯于某事 be/get to sth 习惯于做某事 be/get sth 被用于做某事 be sth 被用作.... Be 过去常常做某事 sth 特地,不怕麻烦的做某事 使某人感到宾至如归计划做某事 sth 没有理由 have 注意你的行为 your manners 发出噪音 make (a) 做鬼脸 make 自学 ....by oneself 在适当的时间 at the time 以......开始 begin 忍不住做某事can't sth 代替 of 对某事随意 be sth 邀请某人做某事 sb sth 指向 重点短语句型讲解: 1. Y ou should have asked what you were supposed to wear.你本应该问清楚怎么样穿才得体。 中的“should have asked”是“情态动词+现在完成时”表示过去本应该做某事,事实上没有做,这是虚拟语气的一种表达方式。 如:She should have gone to Beijing. 她本应该去了北京。(没有去) 同时was/were supposed to do sth 表示过去本该做某事而实际上并没有做,就相当于should have done sth. 2. make (some) mistakes 犯了(一些)错误。make a mistake 犯错误(一个) 与mistake相关的短语 by mistake 错误地 mistake…for…把..误认为… 5.relaxed:用来形容人,表示人本身很放松,主语一般是人。 relaxing:指物,表示事物可使人很放松。 I feel really after the vacation.经过这次令人放松的假期后我感到很放松。 3. …it’s okay if you arrive a bit late….即使你晚到一会也没关系。 a little 与 a bit 二者都是“有点儿”的意思。 (1)二者相同之处在于①都可做状语,修饰比较级 He is a bit/ a little older than you. ②都可做主语或宾语。Please give me a bit/ a little. (2)不同之处在于:两者修饰名词时,a little可以直接加名词,a bit必须加of后才能接名词。 A little money = a bit of money 4. drop by 顺便拜访串门 We just dropped by our friends’homes.我们刚刚去朋友家串门。 drop in/on sb 顺便走访某人。
