If you’ve become a household name as a celebrity chef on TV and you sell

over two and a half million cookbooks a year worldwide and you’ve just turned

30, what do you do for the main course of your life? Well, if you’re the British chef, Jamie Oliver, you campaign to change the eating habits of school children,

not just in Britain but here in the United States. And you also open a restaurant. You might think there’s nothing unusual about that, but there was.

Just over three years ago, Oliver put up more than two million dollars to

finance a restaurant from which he will never make a profit. He runs a charity and staffs it with disadvantaged young people that he essentially takes off the streets. Today, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant is one of the best in London.

Jamie Oliver’s plan to turn 15 unemployed and often homeless young

Londoners into chefs and to open a restaurant called Fifteen in their honor, was captured in a documentary film that had all the ingredients of a soap opera.

Oliver has also confounded(反驳)other critics, who called his idea of

training disadvantaged young people to become chefs just a flash in the pan. But

it wasn’t. Every year he takes on another 15 new trainees. This is his third group. Every fall, Oliver takes his trainees to Tuscany,a place in the mid-west Italy, for a tour of the vineyards and olive groves. But Oliver says that trip is not just about eating and drinking. For many of the trainees it’s a turning point in their lives. Oliver says “With Giovanni, in his particular vineyard, and his generosity and they see how he makes his wine and then they drink his wine, and they finally realize

that every damn thing in his life is consistent. And actually, if you start acting consistently, in a good way, from today, it’s only a matter of time before you too can be an expert and a master. ”

41.We learn that Jamie Oliver is the following except______.

A. a successful chef

B. a cookbook writer

C. a restaurant owner

D. a cook for school children

42. “Disadvantaged young people” in the second paragraph most probably

It’s been said that life turns on small things. Sometimes it’s hard to see

how small choices can change your life. But when put together over time, the little things can make the biggest difference.

The theme of Success for Teens is “Little Things Matter”. The book helps

teens identify small, positive choices they can make in their lives to help them reach their goals. Lots of teens don’t realize how the little choices in their lives can have lasting effects. Often they focus on the bigger events, such as a major exam, a big game or competition, or choosing a college. The little things, however, can go unnoticed unless your teen understands how important they can be.

The little things that lead to success are mostly easy to do. Help your teen

identify a few areas in everyday life where he or she can make small, positive choices. It might be as simple as getting up on time, prioritizing(按重要性排列)

their schoolwork, putting in an extra 10 minutes of practice or using some spare

time to help someone else.

Nineteen-year-old Kyle Freas used to be on his school baseball team and

would play every day after school. When the season was over, he had an empty

three hours a day, so he started spending one third of such extra time daily

looking for ways to help other kids. Over the past few years, his project has raised thousands of dollars to help abused, homeless and sick children. Kyle spent just a little time each day doing something that ended up benefiting a lot of kids. The

important thing to understand is that Kyle made the small and positive decisions necessary for success.

Make sure your child understands that even though the results of the positive choices may not be seen right away, they are building on each other and taking

him or her on a path that will lead to success.

It’s 8:35 a.m. and you’re already late for work. You hurry up and get ready, leaving most of your morning routine undone. In your rush to get out of the door, you leave your laptop parked on the kitchen table. It is only when your boss requests the latest report that you even realize your mistake. Not to worry, one computer is as good as another. Like the clouds in the sky, your work is with you everywhere you go. Just press your boss’s computer keyboard buttons, and the

report will appear on the monitor. Welcome to the convenience of cloud

computing.

Generally speaking, cloud computing refers to computer services that are

delivered entirely over the Internet. The goal of cloud computing is to provide all computer services over the Internet. Software is a service, not a physical product, and the computer is little more than an access point(入口), so any computer

will do the job. Cloud computing is not an entirely new idea. Early computers were big and expensive, so it wasn’t practical to spread out full systems to every user. Modern computers are smaller and cheaper, and even the lowest-priced laptops

are much more powerful than old mainframe(主机) computers. So with

computing power so readily available, why the shift toward cloud computing?

Cloud computing supporters point to the convenience factor. Users don’t

need to fix or manage software. And data and applications are available on any computer connected to the Internet.

Critics of cloud computing argue that it is a bad idea to lose total control of information. They argue that if companies like Google were to suddenly disappear, users could lose all of their valuable data.

第一套

9 / 15

These days, however, people seem comfortable with experts handling

important matters. They keep money in banks, after all. Is data on the Internet so different?

Still, if you do “work in the clouds”, you might want to keep a backup copy

(备份), just in case.

51. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Cloud computing is a completely new idea.

B. Cloud computing needs big and expensive computers.

C. Cloud computing is aimed at providing all computer services over the Internet.

D. Users of cloud computing need to fix or manage software when connecting to

the Internet.

52. In the time of cloud computing, we can .

A. leave our laptops on the kitchen table

B. use our boss’s computer

C. control the available information and data

D. do our jobs anywhere with any computer connected to the Internet

53. The passage mainly tells us .

A. You don’t need to take your laptop to work

B. different opinions on cloud computing

C. cloud computing is convenient

D. cloud computing is unsafe

54. The underlined word “shift” in the third paragraph probably means _______.

A. share

B. shape

C. change

D. charge

55. We can infer that _______.

A. the writer is for the idea of cloud computing

B. the writer is against the idea of cloud computing

C. the writer feels Google is not a safe company

D. the writer don’t want to go to work with a laptop

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediately

liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a person based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she is dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by

nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.

Nonverbal communication is important because we use the action of others

to learn about their affective emotional states. Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes — fear, joy, anger or sadness — so we can express them

without ever saying a word . For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.

Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is

usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.

Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture–related. It is

based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries

for man to hug each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture

may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.
