This doctrine has broadened the application of the Fourteenth

Amendment to other nonracial forms of discrimination, for while some justices have refused to find any legislative classification other than race to be constitutionally disfavored, most have been receptive to arguments that at least some nonracial discriminations, sexual discrimination in particular, are “suspect”and deserve this heightened scrutiny by the courts.

find sth to be constitutionally disfavored

Be receptive to arguments

This doctrine has broadened the application of the Fourteenth Amendment to other nonracial forms of discrimination.

其他成分:for while some justices have refused to find any legislative classification other than race to be constitutionally disfavored, /most have been receptive to arguments that /at least some nonracial discriminations, sexual discrimination in particular, are “suspect”and deserve this heightened scrutiny by the courts.

while some justices have refused to find any legislative classification other than race to be constitutionally disfavored,

/most have been receptive to arguments that /at least some nonracial discriminations, sexual discrimination in particular, are “suspect”and deserve this heightened scrutiny by the courts.

Once, it was fashionable to describe the brain as being like the hydraulic systems employed to create pleasing fountains for 17th-century aristocrats’gardens. As technology moved on, first the telegraph network and then the telephone exchange became the metaphor of choice. Now it is the turn of the computer. But though the brain-as-computer is, indeed, only a metaphor, one group of scientists would like to stand that metaphor on its head. Instead of thinking of brains as being like computers, they wish to make computers more like brains. This way, they believe, humanity will end up not only with a better understanding of how the brain works, but also with better, smarter computers.

1. The sentence “one group of scientists would like to stand that metaphor on its head”most probably means .

(A) one group of scientists would like to change the brain as the metaphor of head.

(B) one group of scientists would like to make the brain more like a computer.

(C) one group of scientists would like to put the metaphor on the brain.

(D) one group of scientists would like to design a brain-like computer.

Instead of thinkingof brains as being like computers, they wish to make computers more likebrains.

选项分析:AC两个个选项都是对于字面单词的胡乱改写;

a brain-like computer.

one group of scientists would like to stand that metaphor on its head的翻译是:但有一批

Deliberate practice entails (needs) more than simply repeating a task. Rather, it involves setting specific goals, obtaining immediate feedback and concentrating as much on technique as on outcome.

选项:Deliberate practice requires immediate feedback and a high degree of concentration.

Deliberate practice involves = Deliberate practice requires 这里就是原文和选项一致的地方;

concentrating as much on technique as on outcome 绝对不等于a high degree of concentration 啊!

Creating a “European identity”that respects the different cultures and traditions which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.

Creating a “European identity”is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.

其他成分:that respects the different cultures and traditions “European identity”的定语从句

which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent (根据go可以判定这个定语从句是在修饰cultures and traditions而不是“European identity")

go to make up :go to 可以不翻译,直接翻译为make up (组成);

European identity

Creating a “European identity”that respects the different cultures and traditions is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.

which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent

the connecting fabric of the Old Continent

EVEN a non-decision by the Supreme Court can cause waves. On October 5th, as part of its routine disclosure of upcoming cases, the Court declined to take up a petition related to insider trading. The Justice Department had wanted it to overturn an appeals court’s decision in December to throw out the conviction of two hedge-fund managers. That means the decision will now stand, setting an important legal precedent.

What can we infer from this paragraph?

(A) The Court echoed the Justice Department to decline the petition.

(B) The Court declined a petition made by the Justice Department.

(C) The Court overturned the petition of appeals court's conviction.

(D) The Court had set an important legal precedent with a non decision.

当时也特别不幸,突然高烧不退,开始以为是普通感冒,一直发烧了两天都没见好,后来去医院,才检查出是急性肺炎,连续输了十五天液,当时在病床上,才觉得能够在图书馆静静的看书,能在讲台上挥洒热情是多么幸福的事情;

And it is clear that aside from politics and business, it is particularly the cultural dialog that brings people together and which serves as a basis for a better mutual understanding.

We can see the promising progress on the cultural communication.

This only to show, nevertheless, that so much work remains to be done.

EVEN a non-decision by the Supreme Court can cause waves.

OnOctober 5th, as part of its routine disclosure of upcoming cases, the Court declined to take up a petition related to insider trading.

The Justice Department had wanted it to overturn an appeals court’s decision/ in December/定语(to throw out the conviction of two hedge-fund managers)定语修饰decision.

There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general or to the research techniques appropriate to the

various branches of historicalinquiry. Thereis no agreement

其他成分:whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in

general or tothe research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historicalinquiry.

Whether methodology refers to …or to….

the concepts后面的形容词短语peculiar to historical work in general是它的定语;the researchtechniques后面的形容词短语appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry也是作定语。

Thereis no agreement

There be 句式的翻译,补充出主语人们,因此可以翻译为:人们对此意见不一。同位语可以提前翻译;

whether...refers to... or to... 是指……

the concepts/peculiar to/historicalwork/in general

the research techniques 研究手段

the various branches 各个领域

Doctors have long quietly eased terminal agonies by increasing pain relief to

life-shortening doses. Under the doctrine of double effect, as long as the intention was to relieve suffering rather than hasten death, no crime was committed. What the doctor really intended was hard for anyone else to know, let alone prove.

But more deaths now happen in intensive-care units under closer legal and professional oversight, making doctors more cautious about testing the limits of what is allowed. And modern medicine means that dying is much more often prolonged. The case of Karen Ann Quinlan in 1976 thrust the issues into the spotlight. The parents of the young woman, who fell into a coma after drinking and taking Valium at a party, had to go to court to force her doctors to take her off a ventilator.

The case of kaern Ann Quinlan is mentioned to show that____

(A) doctors have long quietly eased terminal agonies by increasing pain relief.

(B) the parents have the rights to demand ceasing of the dramatic treatment.

(C) the case has thrust the issue into the focus for its publicity.

(D) the dying period is unnecessaily prolonged by the modern therapy.

Our world has been honed by the unparalleled richness and diversity.

The people around us belong to different cultures, languages and faiths; represent a multitude of traditions, customs and values; and possess unique goals, aspirations and dreams.

In a society in which the differences between us are often easier to spot than the similarities, achieving mutual understanding is not just a matter of importance, but of great necessity.

The case of Karen Ann Quinlan in 1976 thrust the issues into the spotlight.

And modern medicine means that dying is much more often prolonged.

(D) the dying period is unnecessaily prolonged by the modern therapy.

Historians have only recently begun to note the increase in

demand for luxury goods and services that took place in

eighteenth-century England. McKendrick has explored the

Wedgwood firm’s remarkable success in marketing luxury pottery; Plumb has written about the rapid increase of provincial

theaters, musical festivals, and children’s toys and books.

While the fact of this consumer revolution is hardly in doubt, three key questions remain: Who were the consumers? What were

their motives? And what were the effects of the new demand for luxuries?

1. In the first paragraph, the author mentions McKendrick and Plumb most probably to

[A] compare their interest in luxury goods and in luxury services.

[B] confirm key questions about 18th-century England consumerism.

[C] contrast their views on luxury consumerism in 18th-century England.

[D] exemplify historians who have proved the growing consumerism in 18th-century England.

In the last half of the nineteenth century "capital" and "labour" were enlarging and perfecting their rival organisations on modern lines. Many an old firm was replaced by a limited liability company with a bureaucracy of salaried managers. The change met the technical requirements of the new age by engaging a large professional element and prevented the decline in efficiency that so commonly spoiled the fortunes of family firms in the second and third generation after the energetic founders. It was moreover a step away from individual initiative, towards collectivism and municipal and state-owned business. The railway companies, though still private business managed for the benefit of shareholders, were very unlike old family business. At the same time the great municipalities went into business to supply lighting, trams and other services to the taxpayers.

59. It's true of the old family firms that ________.

[A] they were spoiled by the younger generations

[B] they failed for lack of individual initiative

[C] they lacked efficiency compared with modern companies

[D] they could supply adequate services to the taxpayers

答案选C

Most real-life personal assistants do not need to worry about their jobs being threatened by technology—at least yet. Digital assistants serve as a hands-free way to search for information but struggle to complete actions that require more complex steps, such as booking flights. Your correspondent spent several days “employing”a variety of available digital assistants. Although they can find nearby restaurants and

make a booking through OpenTable, they do not yet know her well enough or have the judgment to tell her which is the “best”Italian food. Echo, Amazon’s product, can recite the definition of “personal assistant”without hesitation, but had no idea how to respond when your correspondent asked whether Echo was her personal assistant.

Why it is not necessary to worry about job replacement by technology?

(A) The digital assistants can not finish information searching for booking flights.

(B) The digital assistants are confused about the definition of the personal assistant.

(C) The digital assistants are lost in the judgment of their Personal identities.

(D) The digital assistants can not cooperate with your correspondents appropriately.

59. It's true of the old family firms that ________.

[A] they were spoiled by the younger generations

[B] they failed for lack of individual initiative

[C] they lacked efficiency compared with modern companies

[D] they could supply adequate services to the taxpayers

选项分析:用四个选项分别和原文句子比对,同意替换的为正确选项,其他的排除;

[A] they were spoiled by the younger generations

被年轻一代给毁了;

原文:that so commonly spoiled the fortunes of family firms in the second and third generation.

[D] they could supply adequate services to the taxpayers

原文:the great municipalities went into business to supply lighting, trams and other services to the taxpayers.

[B] they failed for lack of individual initiative

It was moreover a step away from individual initiative

It= the change

The change was moreover a step away from individual initiative.

说明之前是不缺乏individual initiative的;

[C] they lacked efficiency compared with modern companies

原文:decline in efficiency so commonly spoiled the fortunes of family firms.

完美的同意替换;

从有到无也是一种比较;

(C) The digital assistants are lost in the judgment of their Personal identities.

对应的是:but had no idea how to respond when your correspondent asked whether Echo was her personal assistant.

(D) The digital assistants can not cooperate with your correspondents appropriately.

BUDGET, curriculum, class size—none has a greater effect on a student than his or her teacher. Given this, politicians might be expected todo all in their power to ensure that America’s teachers are good ones. For decades, they have done the opposite. The trouble begins long before ateacher enters the classroom. In America, most teachers were mediocre students. Only 23% of new teachers were in the top third of college graduates.

Union rules make it extremely hard to fire teachers who turn out to be bad at their jobs. Younger teachers are usually the first to be let go, even though seniority does not necessarily ensure quality. In 2009 Indiana and Florida fired young staff who had been nominated for “teacher of the year”. But the debate over bad teachers ignores an equally big problem: there has been little effort to identify good ones, let alone reward

them.

Which of the following is NOT true?

(A) Bad teachers overlook some important problems.

(B) Most of teachers were averagestudents.

(C) It is hard to judge the quality of teachers.

(D) Some excellent teachers are unqualified.
