Summer Sunrises on the Mississippi

Mark Twain

One can never see too many summer sunrises on the Mississippi. They are enchanting. First, there is the eloquence of silence; for a deep hush broods everywhere. Next, there is the haunting sense of loneliness, isolation, remoteness from the worry and bustle of the world. The dawn creeps in stealthily; the solid walls of the black forest soften to grey, and vast stretches of the river open up and reveal themselves; the water is smooth, gives off spectral little wreaths of white-mist, there is not the faintest breath of wind, nor stir of leaf; the tranquility is profound an infinitely satisfying. Then a bird pipes up, another follows, and soon the pipings develop into a jubilant riot of music. You see none of the birds, you simply move through an atmosphere of song which seems to sing itself.

When the light has become a little stronger, you have one of the fairest and softest pictures imaginable. You have the intense green of the massed and crowded foliage near by; you see it paling shade by shade in front of you; upon the next projecting cape, a mile off or more, the tint had lightened to the tender young green of spring; the cape beyond that one has almost lost color, and the furthest one, miles away under the horizon, sleeps upon the water a mere dim vapor, and hardly separable from the sky above it and about it. And all this stretch of river is a mirror, and you have shadowy reflections of the leafage and the curving shores and the receding capes pictured in it. Well, this is all beautiful; soft and rich and beautiful; and when the sun gets well up, and distributes a pink flush here and a powder of gold yonder and a purple haze where it will yield the best effect, you grant that you have something that is worth remembering.

We all know that supply of provisions and clothing is only one aspect of life. This is especially true of old folks. Like young people, they have the need of cultural life, the need of recreation and amusement, the need of dignity and the need of accomplishment. They want to, in their remaining years, make their lives easier and more substantial.

One day, I strolled into an old curiosity shop where I browsed the antiques on display. As I walked further into the store, I found, to my great surprise, that the cashier behind the register turned out to be an old woman. I can never understand what has driven this old woman to join the rank of wage earners at an age when she should take life easy and enjoy the few days she had left with her. All I know is that I could tell at first sight she apparently enjoyed what she was doing, and was competent for the job. Her concentration of mind, her skillful handling of the cash register and her faint, naive yet somewhat facetious smile from behind her toothless mouth after the settlement of each account was simply amusing. Somehow I halted beside her. Only then did I discover in what perfect harmony the old woman behind the cashier's register was with the antique shop. It can very well be a trick employed to attract customers. With many questions unasked I left that store, for somehow I was convinced there must be something intriguing between this old woman and the old curiosity shop. How I wish I could hear it all!

A udrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit

Although she was never an ardent follower of any formal religion, my mother’s own faith endured

throughout her life: her faith in love, her faith in the miracle of nature, and her faith in the goodness of life. She honored this second chance at life at every opportunity that presented itself and most of all at the end of her life, through her work for UNICEF.

Sometimes a near-death experience can free us of the shackles that life slowly trains us to wear. We come to realize what’s worth the sweat and what isn’t. Although she ha d no memory of her childhood near-death experience, the knowledge of it, coupled with the fertile ground of an already self-effacing nature, were the roots of the humility that graced her entire life.

I never heard her say, “I did this,” or “I’ve done that.” Toward the end of her life, throughout the UNICEF years, I would hear her say regularly, as the world listened to her, “I can do very little.” I never heard her say that she liked any of her performances. When people complimented her, she would always shy away and ultimately explain how those who surrounded her were the reason for her success.

Bessie Anderson Stanley wrote, “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier becaus e you have lived, this is to have succeeded.”

By Ms. Stanley’s standards, my mother’s life was a success: She was graced with good choices. The first choice she made was her career. Then she chose her family. And when we, her children, were grown and had started our lives, she chose the less fortunate children of the world. She chose to give back. In that important choice lay the key to healing and understanding something that had affected her throughout her entire life: the sadness that had always been there.

Her choices healed the sadness of a little girl who didn’t know her father for most of her life and yet who yearned and longed for that warm embrace, that reassurance that you are loved and that you matter. When I look back, that is just what she gave to Luca and me: the reassurance that we were loved and that we mattered. This was the most valuable essence, the roots that live and grow forever inside you. She truly was a wonderful mother and friend.

At 14:28 on 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake struck Wenchuan of Sichuan Province. It was an earthquake that shocked the world. It caused heavy casualties and property damage, and inflicted enormous losses on local economic and social development. In the face of the unprecedented natural disaster, the whole Party, armed forces and people of all ethnic groups in China rallied behind the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission, and worked as one to fight the disaster with great determination, courage and strength. We launched a rescue and relief operation which was faster in response and mobilized more personnel and resources than ever before in China's history. We made the utmost effort to save lives and minimize the damage, and achieved major success in the fight against the disaster, demonstrating the indomitable and unyielding spirit of the Chinese people and writing a touching and heroic chapter in the history of our nation.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, we made scientific plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction, promptly introduced a host of policies and measures to support the quake-hit areas, energetically organized one-to-one assistance programs, and swiftly launched rehabilitation and reconstruction work in accordance with the principles of putting people first, respecting nature, making coordinated plans and carrying out reconstruction in a scientific way. Thanks to the strong support of the CPC Central Committee, the strenuous efforts of the local officials and people and generous assistance from the rest of the country, notable progress has been made in the reconstruction of urban and rural homes, schools, hospitals and other public service facilities, the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure, the rebuilding and restructuring of industries, the preservation of places of historical and cultural interest, as well as in ecological rehabilitation. With these major preliminary successes, the people in the quake-hit areas are now marching toward a new life. All this has laid a solid foundation for the complete success of our relief and reconstruction endeavor.
