Oxford University once claimed to have been founded by Alfred the Great in the 9th Century, but in fact, it began to take shape in the 12th Century when English scholars were forced to leave from Paris University and began to gather at Oxford's Abbeys (修道院) and Priories (寺院), which were by then already established centers of learning.

Today, 39 independent colleges are related to the University in a type of federal system. Each is governed by a Head of House and a number of Fellows, who are scholars specializing in a wide variety of subjects, most of whom also hold University posts.

Across both the Arts and the Sciences, Oxford research consistently ranks top both nationally and internationally. As well as being in the front of scientific, medical, and technological achievement, the University has strong links with research organizations and industrial concerns both in the UK and overseas. Its income from offers for research in 1996 totaled over £107 million. The University's great age also allows its teaching staff and research students to draw on a tradition of great library and museum collections.

Students working for higher degrees are an important and valued part. They currently make up over a quarter of the total student body of 15,641, drawn by the excellent facilities for research which the University can offer, therefore the number of graduate students is increasing.

In all these fields, Oxford attracts scholars from many parts of the world to join its teaching and research staff, and also values the important role of overseas graduate students in providing intellectual drive and creating and keeping links with colleges abroad.

To get into the University, students must first win a place by competitive examination at one of the colleges, which have their own policies. And the process of acceptance by both the professor and college can take some time; early application is therefore strongly advised.

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Sylvester and I are watching television advertisements because we need information for a class research project. We have to discuss realism and dreams in television advertising, and so we are looking for examples of things that are not true in television advertisements. The question we are asking is, "Is the advertisement true to life, or does it offer an unreal picture of the product?"

Sylvester is keeping track of the lies, and he already has quite a long list. He says that all housewives seem to live in lovely homes, dress beautifully, and love their household chores. They smile and boast about floor cleaners and proudly display their dirty clothes, dirty tabletops, and dirty children. In addition, he has never seen men doing housework. Sylvester thinks that this view of family life is filled with things that are not true.

I am keeping track of the people who appear in the advertisements.

I have found handsome men chasing after beautiful women, and they are always recommending brand X toothpaste or brand Y cologne (科隆香水). I see teenagers and children with their friends, having wonderful time at parties and at school, and they are usually enjoying large, happy family gatherings. I think that these advertisements are also filled with things that aren't true.

Sylvester and I have discovered that much of American life is pictured unrealistically on television. Teenagers do not always have fun at parties, and very few people love doing chores. People do have problems but few of these are ever shown in advertisements. Instead, we watch Cinderella discover a miracle floor cleaner, finish the kitchen chores, and waltz off to the ball. Our heads are filled with these dreams, and they also suggest that, for any problem, brand Z will provide the instant cure. Sylvester and I will have very few facts and a lot of dreams to write about in our research reports.

6.Why are the speaker and Sylvester watching television?

A. They are looking for good products.

B. They are trying to be like TV people.

C. They are interested in advertising.

D. They are doing a school project.

7.What are they trying to find out about TV advertisements?

A. Whether they tell the truth about life.

B. Whether they have both men and women.

C. Whether they show a good way to live.

D. Whether they are fair to women and men.

8.What does the author think about how teenagers are shown?

A. It is incomplete.

B. It is unrealistic.

C. It is true to life.

D. It is too boring.

9.Sylvester and the author have come to the conclusion that

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. Since the late 1960s a growing number of women have expressed a strong dissatisfaction with any marriage arrangement in which the husband and his career are the most important considerations in the marriage. By the end of the 1970s, for example, considerably less than half of the women in the United States still believed that they would put their husbands and children ahead of their own careers.

More and more American women have come to believe that they should be equal partners in their marriages. This stage of marriage, although still unusual in most American marriages at present, will grow most rapidly in the future. In an equal marriage, the wife gets a full-time job or career which has equal importance to her husband's. The long-standing division of labor between husband and wife comes to an end. The husband is no longer the main provider of family income, and the wife no longer has the main responsibilities for household duties and raising children. Husband and wife share all these duties equally. Power over family decisions is also shared equally.

The rapid change in women's attitudes toward marriage in the 1970s reflected the rapid changes in the larger society. The Women's Liberation Movement appeared in the late 1960s, demanding an end to all forms of prejudice against females. An Equal Rights Amendment (修正案) to the US Constitution was proposed which would make any form of prejudice on the basis of sex illegal, and though it has failed to be confirmed, it continues to have millions of supporters.

11.Since the late 1960s more women have been dissatisfied with

the marriage in which __________________.

A. they are unhappy

B. they are in a lower position

C. only the husband earns money

D. the wife only takes care of the household

12.What is the long-standing division of labor between husband

and wife in America?

A. Husband―provider, wife―domestic duties.

B. Husband and wife share the housework.

C. Husband and wife have equal responsibility.

D. Husband plays a higher role than the wife

13.Which statement is NOT true about the new type of marriage?

A. Husband and wife share all their duties equally.

B. Wife can also make the decisions in the family.

C. Wife earns their living while husband does the housework.

D. Husband is also responsible for raising children.

14.Women's attitudes toward marriage involve

____________________.

A. the Women's Liberation Movement

B. forbidding any form of prejudice against women

C. the changing roles of husband and wife in the marriage

D. all of the above

15.Which of the following describes the general idea for this

passage?

A. The Changing Patterns of Americans' Marriage.

B. An Ideal Marriage.

C. The Women's Liberation Movement.

D. The need for Equal Rights between Husband and Wife.

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the same passage or dialog. In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the warmer southern Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about a half a dozen create the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that can cause great harm, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.

The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling winds hundreds—even thousands—of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, wet air flows in at the bottom of these winds, moves upward through it, and comes out at the top. In the process, the water in this warm air produces rain. And the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young storm begins to move in circles, turning in the direction opposite to the movement of a clock's hands.

The average life of a strong storm of this type is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat given by a great storm's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and damage in a great storm. One of these storms usually brings 6 to 12 inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure storm center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.

16.This passage describes __________.

A. the growth of great storms

B. the damage caused by great storms

C. the average life of a great storm

D. All of the above

17.The powerful storms described in this passage have winds

that move at __________.

A. 75 miles per hour or more

B. less than 75 miles per hour

C. half a dozen miles per hour

D. 75 miles per hour

18.According to the passage, the growth of a great storm goes

through the following steps:

A. small winds—trade winds—air flows—wet

air—rain—heat—strong wind

B. wet air—trade winds—strong wind—rain—warm

winds—heat—air flows

C. small winds—wet air—trade wind—strong wind—air

flows—heat—rain

D. wet air—trade wind—strong wind—heat—air flows—small

19.According to the passage, the energy in the heat given by a

great storm's rainfall in a single day would

_______________________________.

A. destroy half of the farmlands in the United States within one

hour

B. provide electrical power to the U. S. for more than half a

(1) Part I??Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louver; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first co mputer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings. Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works. A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer. Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum would make computer art funnier for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum. 1. The main purpose of this passage is to give information about _______. A) museums throughout the world B) an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S. C) art exhibitions in Florida International University D) latest development of computer art 2.
