Reinforcements Instead of Helicopters
Since ancient times, parents have been seeking the most appropriate approach to
raising children, and now there are three popularparenting styles, including authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. However, I think each one has both merit and defects, and parents should combine the three styles in a perfect way, that is, to be reinforcements instead of helicopters. In most cases, parents should be permissive, giving their children freedom to make their own choices, only when you think your children have deviated too much, you give them some advice, and persuade them to follow your advice if necessary.
Parents should refuse to be helicopters.On the one hand,children need to learn how to take good care of themselves sooner or later, on account that parents can’t protect them for a whole life. On the other hand, in many cases, that kind of anxious, over-involved parenting can actually harm our kids because they can’t handle those emergencies when their parents aren’t besides them. For instance, according to statistics, kids in the 1950s—that golden era so often evoked by conservative politicians—were in fact five times likelier to die before the age of five. So relax and your kids will be fine.
Parents shouldn’t always make decisions for their children.First of all, parents do so
mainly because they believe that they know what is the best for their children and therefore they “exercise dictatorship”, regardless of all their children’s desires and preferences. But those parents are sometimes over-confident, because the society is developing rapidly and many of their opinions and experience have lagged behind the times. More importantly, if children are always living under parents’ dictatorship, they may suffer a lot and have psychological shadow, which will definitely have a bad impact on their future. Also, the ability to make a decision all by oneself is a basic skill that everyone should master, otherwise he or she will be looked down upon.
Parents should offer advice when necessary. As we all know, no one is perfect, so there are very likely to be some deficiencies in children’s decisions, which parents can help to perfect. For example, Xiao Ming falls in love with a girl in high school, and he just wants to stay happily with her, neglecting his study. Then his parents feelthat their son is making mistakes because of youth, thus they talk to him “you see, your primary task is to study, maybe you can put your feelings asidefor the time being, just imagine that you two are admitted by the same university, your chances are a lot, right?” Xiao Ming thinks the advice is reasonable, so he follows it and more importantly, it is he that makes the decision, which boosts his growth and encourages him to be responsible for himself and others.
In conclusion, parents should be reinforcements-emergeonly when children really need help, rather than helicopters-always hover above their “vulnerable” kids.。
