Unit-1 College life: Challenges and opportunities一、Reading课文&翻译Some thoughts from a professor1 As both a college professor and parent of a college student, this time of year always seems to raise a variety of thoughts as freshly minted high school graduates head off to their new adventures. In a couple of weeks, green first-year students will be wandering around campuses everywhere, looking young and confused.

2 "Where do I find Burdine Hall?" asks the first year looking impossibly young.“我在哪里可以找到伯丁会堂?”一个看上去年轻得不可思议的新生问道。

the global economy is becoming more and more competitive and in order to 5 improve the chances for a well-paying job, a college education is extremely important. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 90 percent of the fastest-growing jobs of the future will 6 require some postsecondary education or training. College graduates earn nearly 7 twice as much as high school diploma holders. Unlike the past generations, high school graduates are unable to qualify for the high-paying jobs that are now available. A college education undeniably serves as a gateway to 8 better options and more opportunities.
1 When you go away to college, you leave behind old friends from high school and from your childhood. You leave the comfort and stability of your home and your family to delve into a new and exciting world of dorm rooms and strangers. It is not unnatural to feel scared and unsure of yourself. Many people have formed friendships as children that they have maintained all of their life, and so going away to college and trying to make new friends can seem very daunting. Don't worry, though. There are going to be so many freshmen at your college that are experiencing the same emotions and anxieties as you are, and therefore you will already have some common ground with these strangers.

Zhuangzi posed a well-known question in the fourth century B。

C. — was he Zhuangzi who had dreamt of being a butterfly or was he a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi?Zhuangzi came to the realization that he had perceived ”the transformation of things”, indicating that one should go along with this transformation rather than trying in vain to search for what is real。

Confucius' call for "rectification of names" is more a method for securing sociopolitical order than for capturing the essence of things. Similarly, the views of Mencius and Xunzi about human nature are more recommendations of how one should view oneself in order to become a better person than assertions about whether humans are by nature good or bad。

The predominant orientation of traditional Chinese philosophy is the concern about how to live one's life, rather than finding out the truth about reality. Zhuangzi posed a well-known question in the fourth century B.C. — was he Zhuangzi who had dreamt of being a butterfly or was he a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi? Zhuangzi came to the realization that he had perceived "the transformation of things", indicating that one should go along with this transformation rather than trying in vain to search for what is real. Confucius' call for "rectification of names" is more a method for securing sociopolitical order than for capturing the essence of things. Similarly, the views of Mencius and Xunzi about human nature are more recommendations of how one should view oneself in order to become a better person than assertions about whether humans are by nature good or bad.。
