Awiyao reached for the upper horizontal log which served as the edge of the head-high threshold. Clinging to the log, he lifted himself with one bound that carried him across to the narrow door. He slid back the cover, stepped inside, then pushed the cover back in place. After some moments during which he seemed to wait, he talked to the listening darkness.

“I’m sorry this had to be done. I am really sorry. But neither of us can help it.”

The sound of the gangsas beat through the walls of the dark house, like the muffled roar of falling waters. The woman who had moved with a start when the sliding door opened had been hearing the gangsas of she did not know how long. The sudden rush of the rich sounds when the door opened was like a sharp gush of fire in her. She gave no sign that she heard Awiyao, but continued to sit unmoving in the darkness.

某翁，其婿造新居，送礼十元。是日，新居落成，婿设宴谢工友新朋。翁欲去，其子阻拦：“你能喝几盅？我能满饮十八杯，每杯算二两，再加菜，礼大半可回矣。”遂不听翁劝，迳去赴宴。

席间，无人苦劝，其子仍顾自豪饮，不觉头晕目眩，且欲吐。低头张口，旋即寻思，若不带回喂猪，岂不亏也。便吐于已衣兜内。

其翁见子，趔趔趄趄从猪舍转出，情知子醉如泥，忙购糖水梨四瓶，强灌之，方解其酒。子酒醒，再看猪，猪已醉死。

阿威伸手够住一人多高、当做门槛的横木，双手握紧，一纵身跳上狭窄的小门。他把门拉开，走进去，又把门关好。他似乎要等什么似的站了一会儿，才对着黑暗中的人说。“我很遗憾非这么做不可。是真的。可我们谁也没法子。”

锣声透过这幽暗的小屋的墙壁传进来，如同沉闷的瀑布声。刚才的开门声使屋里的女人吓了一跳。她一直在听锣声，自己也不知听了多久。门一开响亮的锣声涌了进来，她心里像激起了一团火。她好像没听见阿威进来，仍旧呆坐在黑暗中。

At the banquet, without anybody urging him, the young man regaled himself with one cup after another. Soon, without himself knowing it, dizziness and nausea seized the glutton. He bent low to let out the bellyful of food and drink when he thought better of it. Why not bring it back with him t o feed his pigs with? He didn’t want to be the loser in the deal. So he discharged it into his sleeve.

When the sire saw his offspring reeling out of the pigsty, he gathered that he’d had a drop too much. He hastened out, bought four bottles of pears in syrup, forced them down the throat of his son and succeeded in having the effects of liquor alleviated. His son sobered up, the old man turned to look at the pigs. They were all dead, victims of alcoholism.

Here in China, the number of Internet users has nearly doubled since just last October, to more than 1 million users. And I’ve seen statistics that say your Internet population will exceed 7 million people by the year 2001.

Some people are talking about a phenomenon they call “Internet Leapfrog”, a high-stakes game in which countries and geographies that make the most astute use of networked technologies quickly bypass other regions in production, productivity, and profitable growth. Today, this contest of Internet Leapfroging is played on a wide-open field. We hear about 90 million connected users… and some equate that with universal connectivity. But consider that if just 4 percent of the populations of your nation and India got connected tomorrow, the worldwide number of Internet users would double.

请让我简要地阐述三个关键问题：地球真的在变暖吗？燃烧矿物燃料能导致全球变暖吗？我们现在有合理的科学依据预测未来的气温吗？

作为对第一个问题的回答，我们知道地球温度的自然波动有史以来一直就存在——温度的变化幅度很大。冰川期便是很好的例子。

事实上，从1940年到1975年为一段变冷的时期。70年代，那些今天鼓吹全球变暖将带来灾难的人当时预测将会有新的冰川期。

在中国，自去年10月到现在，互联网络使用者的人数翻了一番，达到100多万。我所掌握的统计资料表明，到2001年，中国互联网络使用者将超过7百万人。

有些人正在谈论一种“互联网络蛙跳”现象。这是一个下大赌注的游戏。在这个游戏中，运用互联网技术最为精明的国家和地区，将很快在生产、生产力和赢利增长方面超过其它国家和地区。今天，这项“互联网络蛙跳”游戏正在广阔的天地里进行着。我们知道网络用户数目已达到9千万，有人说这叫“万众一网”。其实，如果中国和印度有4%的人上网，那么全球范围内互联网络使用者的数目将翻一番。

Let me briefly address three key questions: Is the Earth really warming? Does burning fossil fuels cause global warming? And do we now have a reasonable scientific basis for predicting future temperature?

In answer to the first question, we know that natural fluctuations in the Earth’s temperature have occurred throughout history with wide temperature swings. The ice ages are a good example.

In fact, one period of cooling occurred from 1940 to 1975. In the 1970s, some of today’s prophets of doom from global warming were predicting the coming of the new ice age.

Some measurements suggest that the Earth’s average temperature has risen about half a degree centigrade since the late 19th century. Yet sensitive satellite measurements have shown no warming trend since the late 1970s. In fact, the earth is cooler today than it was 20 years ago.
