霍桑《红字》书评 Book review of the Scarlet Letter

Book review of the Scarlet LetterThis is the story of a young woman who fall in love with a young man in Colonial America. They find each other irresistible and concieve a child out of wedlock. In the Puritan world of early America this is a heinous crime and for this, Hester Prine the central character of the novel, is severely punished. With a battered heart she is forced out of town. In the forest where she now finds herself, she finds great comfort from the beauty that surrounds her and fulfillment in her beautiful young child. The townspeople still want her to answer the question she will not answer, who is the child's father, as he must bear the responsibility and the punishment he deserves. But Hester will not tell. Who is this golden child's daddy?Hester, however, will not reveal the identity of her lover, and is content to bare the shame of the scarlet letter on her own. When Mr. Prynne, soon-to-be-known as Roger Chillingworth, arrives, he begins a careful mind game to unravel the identity of Hester's lover, or at the very least, make him snap. Hester ends up being a woman of great principle and quiet purpose. She accepts her sin as dictated to her by society and continues her life waiting for it to wear off. She believes she deserves it. Dimmesdale, on the other hand, never confesses and allows himself to be tormented by Chillingworth. Dimmesdale's lies lead to his downfall, and Chillingworth never gets his young wife. It is only Pearl who grows into a glorious being and settles into a fine life back in the old world, living off Roger Chillingworth's money.Nathaniel Hawthorne's background influenced him to write the bold novel The Scarlet Letter. One important influence on the story is money. Hawthorne had never made much money as an author and the birth of his first daughter added to the financial burden. He received a job at the Salem Custom House only to lose it three years later and be forced to write again to support his family. Consequently, The Scarlet Letter was published a year later. It was only intended to be a long short story, but the extra money a novel would bring in was needed. Hawthorne then wrote an introduction section titled "The Custom House" to extend the length of the book and The Scarlet Letter became a full novel. In addition to financial worries, another influence on the story is Hawthorne's rejection of his ancestors. His forefathers were strict Puritans, and John Hathorne, his great-great-grandfather, was a judge presiding during the Salem witch trials. Hawthorne did not condone their acts and actually spent a great deal of his life renouncing the Puritans in general.Similarly, the Scarlet Letter was a literal "soapbox" for Hawthorne to convey to the world that the majority of Puritans were strict and unfeeling. For example, before Hester emerges from the prison she is being scorned by a group of women who feel that she deserves a larger punishment than she actually receives. Instead of only being made to stand on the scaffold and wear the scarlet letter on her chest, they suggest that she have it branded on her forehead or even be put to death. Perhaps the most important influence on the story is the author's interest in the "dark side".Unlike the transcendentalists of the era, Hawthorne "confronted reality, rather than evading it".Likewise, The Scarlet Letter deals with adultery, a subject that caused much scandal when it was first published, The book revolves around sin and punishment, a far outcry from writers of the time, such as Emerson and Thoreau, who dwelt on optimistic themes. This background, together with a believable plot, convincing characterization, and important literary devices enables Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter to develop the theme of the heart as a prison. The scaffold scenes are the most substantial situations in the story because they unify The Scarlet Letter in two influential ways. First of all, every scaffold scene reunites the main characters of the novel. In the first scene, everyone in the town is gathered in the market place because Hester is being questioned about the identity of the father of her child. In her arms is the product of her sin, Pearl, a three month old baby who is experiencing life outside the prison for the first time. Dimmesdale is standing beside the scaffold because he is Hester's pastor and it is his job to convince her to repent and reveal the father's name. A short time later, Chillingworth unexpectedly shows up within the crowd of people who are watching Hester after he is released from his two year captivity by the Indians. In the second scene, Dimmesdale is standing on top of the scaffold alone in the middle of the night. He sees Hester and Pearl walk through the market place on their way back from Governor Winthrop's bedside. When Dimmesdale recognizes them and tells them to join him, they walk up the steps to stand by his side. Chillingworth appears later standing beside the scaffold, staring at Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl. In the final scaffold scene, Dimmesdale walks to the steps of the scaffold in front of the whole town after his Election day sermon. He tells Hester and Pearl to join him yet again on the scaffold. Chillingworth then runs through the crowd and tries to stop Dimmesdale from reaching the top of the scaffold, the one place where he can't reach him.Another way in which the scenes are united is how each illustrates the immediate, delayed, and prolonged effects that the sin of adultery has on the main characters. The first scene shows Hester being publicly punished on the scaffold. She is being forced to stand on it for three hours straight and listen to people talk about her as a disgrace and a shame to the community. Dimmesdale's instantaneous response to the sin is to lie. He stands before Hester and the rest of the town and proceeds to give a moving speech about how it would be in her and the father's best interest for her to reveal the father's name. Though he never actually says that he is not the other parent, he implies it by talking of the father in third person. Such as, "If thou feelest it to be for thy soul's peace, and that thy earthly punishment will thereby be made more effectual to salvation, I charge thee to speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer". Chillingworth's first reaction is one of shock, but he quickly suppresses it. Since his first sight of his wife in two years is of her being punished for being unfaithful to him, he is naturally surprised. It does not last for long though, because it is his nature to control his emotions.。

A book review of The Kite Runner

A book review of The Kite Runner

A book review of The Kite RunnerClass 1 马凌峰0131124025“For you, a thousand times over.” This is the most famous sentence in the book The Kite Runner, and this is the reason why I want to read this book, because I think this sentence is really beautiful. And this is the first time for me to read a book written by an author from Afghanistan. By coincidence, this book is the Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini’s maiden work. The story is about two Afghani boys: Amir, a well-to-do Pashtun boy, and Hassan, a Hazara who is the son of Ali, Amir's father's servant. Although Hassan’s father was a servant, they were like brothers. They spent their days kite fighting in the hitherto peaceful city of Kabul. Hassan was a successful “kite runner” for Amir; he knew where the kite would land without watching it. Amir's father, a wealthy merchant Amir affectionately refers to as Baba, loves both boys, but is often critical of Amir, considering him weak and lacking in courage. Amir finds a kinder fatherly figure in Rahim Khan, Baba's closest friend, who understands him and supports his interest in writing.Assef, a notorious violent older boy, mocks Amir for socializing with a Hazara, which is, according to Assef, an inferior race whose members belong only in Hazarajat. One day, he prepares to attack Amir with brass knuckles, but Hassan defends Amir, threatening to shoot outAssef's eye with his slingshot. Assef backs off but swears to get revenge. In 1979, five years later, the Soviet Union militarily intervenes in Afghanistan. Amir and Baba escape to Peshawar, Pakistan, and then to Fremont, California, where they settle in a run-down apartment. Baba begins work at a gas station. After graduating from high school, Amir takes classes at a local community college to develop his writing skills. Every Sunday, Baba and Amir make extra money selling used goods at a flea market in San Jose. There, Amir meets fellow refugee Soraya Taheri and her family. Baba is diagnosed with terminal cancer but is still capable of granting Amir one last favor: he asks Soraya's father's permission for Amir to marry her. He agrees and the two marry. Shortly thereafter Baba dies. Amir and Soraya settle down in a happy marriage, but to their sorrow they learn that they cannot have children.Amir embarks on a successful career as a novelist. Fifteen years after his wedding, Amir receives a call from Rahim Khan, who is dying, asking him to come to Peshawar. He enigmatically tells Amir, "There is a way to be good again." Amir goes. From Rahim Khan, Amir learns that Ali was killed by a land mine and that Hassan and his wife were killed after Hassan refused to allow the Taliban to confiscate Baba and Amir's house in Kabul. Rahim Khan further reveals that Ali, being sterile, was not Hassan's biological father. Hassan was actually Baba's son and Amir's half-brother. Finally, he tellsAmir that the reason he called Amir to Pakistan was to rescue Sohrab, Hassan's son, from an orphanage in Kabul.Amir, accompanied by Farid, an Afghan taxi driver and veteran of the war with the Soviets, searches for Sohrab. They learn that a Taliban official comes to the orphanage often, brings cash, and usually takes a girl away with him. Occasionally he chooses a boy, recently Sohrab. The director tells Amir how to find the official, and Farid secures an appointment at his home by claiming to have "personal business" with him.Amir meets the man, who turns out to be Assef. Sohrab is being kept at his house, where he is sexually abused and made to dance dressed in women's clothes. Assef agrees to relinquish him, but only for a price: severely beating Amir. Sohrab interrupts the beating by using his slingshot to shoot out Assef's left eye, fulfilling Hassan's threat made many years before.Amir tells Sohrab of his plans to take him back to America and possibly adopt him. However, American authorities demand evidence of Sohrab's orphan status. Amir tells Sohrab that he may have to temporarily break his promise until the paperwork is completed, and Sohrab attempts suicide. Amir eventually manages to take him back to the United States. After his adoption, Sohrab refuses to interact with Amir or Soraya until the former reminisces about Hassan and kites and shows off some ofHassan's tricks. In the end, Sohrab only gives a lopsided smile, but Amir takes it with all his heart as he run s the kite for Sohrab, saying, “For you, a thousand times over.”All the words above are the main contents of this book. After reading this book, lots of people think that Amir didn’t regard Hassan as a friend because he saw the sexual assault happen right before him, but he didn’t manage to stop it! After that, Amir even tried to change the servant in order to give Hassan the gate! These behaviors make me feel disgusted, but when I read through the part that Amir felt so much guilty for this unfortunate thing, I begin to have the feeling of sympathy. As I see from the book, Amir is a man lack of courage. He wasn’t brave enough to stop the bad thing happened on Hassan; he wasn’t brave enough to express his apology to Hassan. Luckily, he did what he had to do: he saved the little Sohrab—Hassan’s only child from being maltreated by Assef and took him back to America. Amir had owed Hassan an apology many years ago, and he finally said it: “For you, a thousand times over.”Then there is an evil character I want to talk about, he is Assef. I think Assef is quite meaningful to Amir. If he doesn’t exist, Amir will spend his life peacefully with Hassan, Baba and Sohrab. The only quality he doesn’t possess is courage. Just because the existence of Assef in Amir’s life, he has the chance to complete his character. In some ways, Assef is a demon in Amir’s soul. He assaulted Hassan and Sohrab toshow how cruel the society is to Amir. The demon was not destroyed until Amir rescued Sohrab and Sohrab used his slingshot to shoot out Assef's left eye. After that, I think the old, poor-spirited Amir had gone and a new, brave Amir came to life.Men do err, but it can be big, it can be small. Some mistakes only take an apology like “I’m sorry”or “Not on purpose”to have others’forgiveness; some of them require your whole life to do penance. As an old saying goes: “One false step brings everlasting grief.”This book teaches me to make the right choice and to face the reality fearlessly. There will always be something precious to you needs your protection.。

The author established a magic world for us, for which I am extremely grateful. When upset, when in a dilemma, when facing great troubles, I would go to this magic world, drowning myself in it. And thus, I would get totally encouraged. I reckon that's why everyone affects this book. The Book Review of《Food Politics》The book《Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health》was written by Marion Nestle. It was published by Univeristy of California Press in 2003.The book is about how the food industry influences what we eat and thus our health. The author wrote this book to tell people how to choose what to eat.The book is divided into three parts. The first part is the introduction, which includes some main points of the body. It lists a series of important elements, such as “What is a ‘health’ diet”, “Does diet matter”, and “Do Americans overeat” and so forth. The second part is the body, and it is divided into five small parts. They work together to presenting how the food industry works. The last part is conclusion, which contains several aspects about food choice.Firstly, in part one, the author shows us how dietary advice is undermined. Most people know what health diet is, but they know little about it, or in other words, they have narrow ideas towards it. What’s worse, dietary guidelines released by government often are distinctively from the former one. Thus people are easily confused by dietary guidelines. In addition, with diseases occurs and food industries’interference and some other matters dietary advice isrelatively unefficient. It is because dietary guidelines are linked with science of nutrition and health and the interests of food industry. Sometimes between those two conflicts occur. In chapter one, to deal with nutrient deficiences , dietary guidelines suggested people “eat more”, which pleased everyone—agriculture officials, scientists, health rofessionals, and the food industry. However, federal agences advise peole eat less to intake less calories, fat, sugar, and salt since chronic diseases occur. It obviously reduce the profits of the food industry. And as a result, the food industry is bound to do something to prevent it. In chapter two, the author describes in details how the USDA withdrawed its Food Guide Pyramid due to the food industry’s interference, and at the same time, how the incident arose opposition from many organizations. And in chapter three, the author analyzes why the dietary guidelines are changed by the dispute between food industry and scientists. As a result public show more confusion about dietary advice. In fact, the food industry to some extent decide how the dietary guidelines are presented to public. Food industry, however, takes more consideration its own interests rather than people’s health. Then, in part two, the author demonstrates how the system—lobbying and arrangements made with food and nutritionexperts—works. Food companies lobby Congress for favorable laws, governments for favorable regulations, and the White House for favorable agreements. In the meanwhile, the food companies employ some nutritionists and experts to obtain approving judgments about the nutritional quality or health benefits of food products thus to achive large sales.Chapter 4 describes the history of lobbying and explains how the food lobbying continues. Chapter 5 describes that food companies deliberately make connections with nutrition professionals through the companies’sponsorship of research and educational activities so that they can establish a nutritional image of their products. In chapter 6, the author demonstrates how food companies use “softball”methods—making friends with federal officials, legislating cooperation and using public relations to promote product sales and discourage unfavorable regulations. Chapter 7 illustrates two ways in which companies use “hardball”strategies. Food companies sue critics and fix price. Then is part three. Since there are so many problems occur among children and children know very little about nutrition, food companies start to turn to children to gain larger profits. Chapter 8 describes that many American schools have been co-opted into a variety of partnerships that serve the interests of the food industryfar more than they do children’s health.Chpater 9 shows that schools and soft drink companies come to an agreement on “pouring rights” contact.Food industry invents a new product—dietary supplements. In part 4, food indutry try to convince public and governments that their supplements are of great nutritional benefits to people’s health. Chapter 10 explains how federal food and drug regulations apply to dietary supplements and how the food industry works to undermine regulations that restricted the ability of companies to claim health benefits for their products. Chapter 11 describes how Congress comes to require the FDA to approve health claims for conventional foods and supplements and then increasingly passeslaws relaxing restrictions on those claims. Chapter 12 discusses theimplications of supplement deregulation for the food industry and for public health. After that, food industry invents techno-foods. To achive larger product sales, food companies invent techno-foods to apeal to the public’s desire for uncomplicated ways to follow dietary advice. In chapter 13, since Americans no longer suffer from nutrition deficiencies, single nutrient doesn’t attracts people. Techno-foodsenriched with varieties of nutrients do have some advantages although many of them have not been proved. Chapter 14 addresses issues related to the addition of herbal and other non-nutritional dietary supplements to conventional foods. Chapter 15 shows that techno-foods appeal most to people who have followed dietary. The last part is conclusion. The part mainly shows us how environment and ethic influences our choice towards foods. After finishing reading the book, I learned that the development of food industry was linked with health problems, such as diseases and nutrition deficiencies. Before that, I thought it merely had something to do with its sales. And the environment around us was filled up with complexities between food industry, government and publics. I have never thought that food companies in America suffered so much in its way to promote product sales. I knew, actually, very little about the political environment in China. As for me, my mother often told me what I can eat and what I can eat only a liitle. I ate very healthily since I was a child. When I was a child, I intended to eat healthily and behave healthily, therefore, live healthily, because of both the influences from my mother and my own personality. Almost all knowledge about the nutrients of foods was received from my mother and my teachers. After entering the college, I even more concern about nutrients in foods since I have much spare time. I enjoy seaching on the Internet how to eat healthierly and the connections between diseases and nutrients. I find that our body is a relatively complex system that we can hardly enhance our health though some simple ways. Each person is in a different health condition, thus every person’s health is in his own hand. What I can do is not thinking too much about health but obeying some basic rules. It is not sufficient to eat the right food and eat in the right way. Exercising is also necessary. I do not like exercising and I thought it was not that important before. No matter we are healthy or are under nutritional deficiencies, we should eat a varieties of foods rather than some kinds of foods that we like. Even if we have much knowledge about foods, we cannot enhance our health simply by the combination of foods that contains all kinds of nutrients. Since now many foods contain poisons, we are also supposed to not eat merely some kinds of foods.。
