I'm a huge baseball fan so I was psyched to read about how baseball started and its origins. I had no clue that the sport began back in the 1800s in the United States though. I justassumed it had been around forever and ever. The book went into detail about how baseball evolved from older British games like rounders. It was really interesting learning about the Amateur Baseball Association in 1857 that first laid out the key rules of baseball as we know it today. My favorite part was the old-timey illustrations showing people playing in those hilarious baggy pants and massive mustaches. Baseball has definitely changed a lot over the decades in terms of rules, equipment, and uniforms.What really blew my mind was finding out that baseball didn't just spontaneously get invented out of nowhere in America. The textbook provided evidence that it may have descended from even older stick-and-ball games played across Europe and all the way back to ancient civilizations! How crazy is it that the roots of our modern baseball can be traced to games humans were playing for fun thousands of years ago? That's pretty mind-boggling if you ask me. The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans were the first recorded people to play sports kind of like baseball. Just imagining toga-wearing Romans hitting a ball around with a bat was a hilarious visual for me.After those first two readings, we transitioned to different cultural traditions and customs from around the globe. Welearned about the ancient Chinese tradition of foot binding which was sobering to read about. The idea of purposely deforming young girls' feet so they could have tiny "lotus feet" to make them more beautiful and marriageable is just disturbing to me. I had nightmares after seeing the pictures and x-rays of what those poor women's crushed feet looked like. It's hard to believe such an awful practice was the norm in China for centuries until it was finally outlawed in the early 1900s. At the same time, it was fascinating delving into the historical and cultural context behind foot binding. The textbook did a good job explaining how it was tied to ideals of beauty, status, and hierarchy in imperial Chinese society.That heavy topic was followed by a reading on a way more lighthearted tradition - the Carnival celebration in Brazil! I've always wanted to experience Carnival ever since watching the crazy colorful parade footage on TV. From the textbook's depiction, it sounds like an absolute blast. The streets of cities like Rio de Janeiro completely transform into this nonstop party for multiple days and nights. Everyone is dressed in wild costumes, dancing, singing, playing music - just an atmosphere of pure joy and energy. I loved learning the history of how Carnival emerged from the Catholic traditions of feasting and merrymaking before the fasting period of Lent. The book alsowent into the various Carnival traditions like the huge parade floats, samba dancing, throwing of confetti and streamers, and electing of a Carnival king and queen.But Carnival isn't all just fun and games. We read how it also has connections to political protests and satire targeting the government or societal problems. Some of the most famous Carnival music and costumes over the decades have had underlying messages or criticism baked into their celebrations. It reminds me of those protests where people dress in silly costumes or use humor and mockery to make their point. Carnival has been a way for Brazilians to express themselves freely, even when political speech was restricted at certain points.I think using art, music, and revelry to protest is a genius form of resistance!The final section we covered was about international etiquette and manners. I'll admit I zoned out a bit during the deadly dull parts about proper hotel, restaurant, and business etiquette across different cultures. {yawn} However, I did find the examples of etiquette mistakes pretty hilarious. Like how in certain Middle Eastern countries, it's offensive to show the bottom of your foot because feet are considered unclean. So you have to be really careful about how you sit and avoid everpointing your feet at someone. The textbook said there have been cases of foreigners accidentally causing diplomatic controversies just by crossing their legs the wrong way! My favorite "etiquette fail" was about the hand gestures Americans use that are actually super rude in other places. For example, the "OK" hand sign is no big deal here but is basically giving the middle finger in certain countries. And that casual hand wavey think we do for "Hey, over here" or "What's up?" apparently means "Get lost" in parts of Europe. No wonder so many travelers find themselves in awkward situations when they don't understand the local customs!That's just a small sampling of everything packed into this unit on cultures and traditions worldwide. I gained so much random knowledge that I can't wait to show off to my family. Maybe I'll start doing that foot wave at my grandma and see if she has any clue why I'm telling her to get lost. This unit was an awesome reminder that no matter how normal certain behaviors seem to me, there are so many diverse perspectives and histories behind various customs around the world.
