But he adds that "very little of the plicated tax law applies to young people who are just beginning their careers". Aording to Gilbert, 80 to 90 percent of Americans are not really burdened by the system's plications.Still, all the numbers and forms can be a little confusing to those who are just starting their careers. Some pull out their calculators and try to do the math alone. Some use ine tax software. Others just hand the whole responsibility over to tax firms like Gilbert's. Aording to ine tax law expert Linda Beale, young peoplewill often follow their parents' lead when filling their ine forms."Young people who grow up in wealthy households typically use professional tax services because their parents have always done so," said Beale, a professor at Wayne State University in Michigan State."On the other hand, most poorer young people probably try to do their own taxes, unless they want a quick'refund' with the help of a tax advisor".In fact, obeying the law has its benefits. For one, many young people can expect a tax refund. This means that, over the course of the year, they have paid too much in monthly federal or state taxes and are entitled to the difference.Bob Thalman, a 20-year-old university student, expects he will get a refund of about 100, which will probably go in the bank, or perhaps be used to pay for car insurance or credit card bills.Thalman called the whole process a "hassle", but added that he didn't wat to test the law by not filling his ine tax papers."I'm worried about what would happen if I failed to file," he said. "I know one individual who did not report his ine tax for many years, and he's now in federal prison.I certainly don’t want that."16.【题干】A college student with a part-time job is not required to file an ine tax form.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.【题干】The US ine tax system does not wholly apply to a college graduate who is just beginning his or her career.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18.【题干】It's pretty easy for a beginner to report his or her ine tax.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19.【题干】When young people file their ine tax form, they will often follow in their parents' footsteps.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20.【题干】Young people from poorer families needn't file their ine tax forms.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21.【题干】If one has failed to report his or her ine tax for quite a few years, he or she may be put in prison.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22.【题干】The US ine tax system will be simplified in the next few years.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentionedTunguska Event1 A hundred years ago this week, a giganticexplosion ripped (撕裂) open the day y above a forest in western Siberia, leaving ascientific riddle that endures to this day.2 A dazzling light pierced the heavens, followed by a shock wave as strong as 1,000 atomic bombs. The explosionflattened 80 million trees across an area of 2,000 square kilometers. Thefireball was so great that, a day later, Londoners could read their newspapersunder the night sky. What caused the so-called Tunguska Event, named after thenearby Podkamennaya Tunguska river, still remains a mystery.3 Experts suspect it was a rock that, aftertraveling in space for millions of years, was destined to crash to Earth atexactly 7:17 a.m. on June 30, 1908. This possibility worries scientists.“Imagine an unspotted asteroid (小行星) hitting a significant chunk(块) of land ... and imagine ifthat area, unlike Tunguska, werepopulated,” the British science journal Nature mented recently.4 But no fragments of the “rock” have everbeen found. Finding such evidence would be important, for it would increase ourknowledge about the risk posed by dangerous Near Earth Objects (NEOs), sayItalian researchers Luca Gasperini, Enrico Bonatti and Giuseppe Longo. When thenext Tunguska NEO approaches, scientists will have to decide whether to try todeflect (使偏转) it or blowit up in space.5 However, several rival theories for theTunguska Event exist. Wolfgang Kundt, a professor at Germany's Bonn University, believes the Tunguska Event was caused by a massive escape of 10 million tonsof methane(甲烷)-rich gasfrom deep within earth's crust. Some people hold that the explosion was causedby an alien spaceship crash, or a black hole in the universe.23. Paragraph 224. Paragraph 325. Paragraph 426. Paragraph 5A. Competing ExplanationsB. The shock wavewhich followed the dazzling light29. The hypothesisthat the explosion was caused by a rock colliding with the Earth30. Wolfgang Kundt, who has developed an alternative theoryA. has remained a puzzleB. lacks sufficient evidenceC. is a university professorD. was generated by the explosionE. will kill many animalsF. are attacked by aliensDon’t count on dungConservationists (自然保护主义者) may be miscalculating the numbers of the threatened animals such as elephants, say African and American researchers. The error ours because of a flaw in the way they estimate animal numbers from the piles of dung (粪) the creatures leave behind. The mistake could lead researchers to think that there are twice as many elephants as there really are in some regions, aording to Andrew Plumptre of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York.Biologist Katy Payne of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, agrees. "We really need to know elephant numbers and the evidence that we have is quite indirect," says Payne, who electronically tracks elephants.Counting elephants from planes is impossible in the vast rainforests of Central Africa. So researchers often estimate elephant numbers by counting dung piles in a given area. They also need to know the rate at which dung decays: Because it's extremely difficult to determine these rates, however, researchers counting elephants in one region tend to rely on standard decay rates established elsewhere. But researchers at the WCS have found that this decay rate varies from region to region depending on the climate and environment. Using the wrong values can lead the census astray (离开正道), says Plumptre. He and his colleague Anthony Chifu Nchanji studied decaying elephant dung in the forests of Cameroon. They found that the dung decayed between 55 and 65 per cent more slowly than the dung in the rainforests of neighbouring Gabon. If researchers use decay rates from Gabon to count elephants in Cameroon, they would probably find more elephants than are actually around. This could mean estimates in Cameroon are at least twice as high as those derived from decay rates calculated locally, says Plumptre. "However aurate your dung densityestimate might be, the decay rate can severely affect the result."Plumptre also says that the dung-pile census should be carried out over a region similar in size to an elephant's natural range. The usual technique of monitoring only small, protected areas distorts numbers because elephants move in and out of these regions, he says. "If the elephant population increases within the protected area, you can not determine whether it is a real increase or whether it isdue to elephants moving in because they are being poached (入侵偷猎) outside."Plumptre says that similar problems may also affectother animal census studies that rely on indirect evidence such as nests, tracks or burrows (地洞).1 The word "threatened" in the first sentence of the first paragraph could be best replaced byA "endangered".B "frightened".C "killed".D "angered".2 Why do researchers estimate elephant numbers in an area by counting dung piles?A Because elephants are difficult to catch.B Because it is not possible to count elephants from a plane.C Because it is not possible to keep track of elephants.D Because elephants are shy animals.3 Piles of dung can't be relied upon when it es to estimating elephant numbers becauseA they are different in size.B they scatter all over the region.C they are different in decay rate.D they are different in quality.4 Aording to Plumptre, the region over which a dung-pile census is carried out should beA small enough.B well protected.C carefully monitored.D large enough.5 The first word "He" in paragraph6 refers toA Andrew Plumptre.B Katy Payne.C Anthony Chifu Nchanji.D the writer of the article.。

职称英语考试《卫生类》章节练习题精选及答案0523-1

职称英语考试《卫生类》章节练习题精选及答案0523-11、The IcemanOn a September day in 1991, two Germans were climbing the mountains between Austria and Italy. High up on a mountain pass, they found the body of a man lying on the ice. At that height (10,499 feet, or 3 ,200 meters) , the ice is usually permanent, but 1991 had been an especially warm year. The mountain ice had melted more than usual and so the body had come to the surface. It was lying face downward. The skeleton (骨架) was in perfect condition, except for a wound in the head, There was still skin on the bones and the remains of some clothes. The hands were still holding the wooden handle of an ax and on the feet there were very simple leather and cloth hoots. Nearby was a pair of gloves made of tree bark (树皮) and a holder for arrows.Who was this man? How and when had he died? Everybody had a different answer to these questions. Some people thought that it was from this century, perhaps the body of a soldier who died in World War I, since several soldiers had already been found in the area. A Swiss woman believed it might be her father, who had died in those mountains twentyyears before and whose body had never been found. The scientists who rushed to look at the body thought it was probably much older, maybe even a thousand years old. With modern dating techniques, the scientists soon learned that the Iceman was about 5,300 years old. Born in about 3300 B. C. , he lived during the Bronze Age in Europe. At first scientists thought he was probably a hunter who had died from an accident in the high mountains. More recent evidence, however, tells a different story, A new kind of X - ray shows an arrowhead still stuck in his shoulder. It left only a tiny hole in his skin, but it caused internal damage and bleeding. He almost certainly died from this wound, and not from the wound on the back of his head. This means that he was probably in some kind of a battle. It may have been part of a larger war, or he may have been fighting bandits. He may even have been a bandit himself.By studying his clothes and tools, scientists have already learned a great deal from the Iceman about the times he lived in. We may never know the full story of how he died, but he has given us important clues to the history of those distant times. The body of the Iceman was found in the mountains mainly because ______.【单选题】A.two Germans were climbing the mountainsB.the melted ice made him visibleC.he was lying on the iceD.he was just on a mountain pass正确答案:B答案解析:本题是细节题,难度不大,针对文章第一段出题,比较容易找到答案依据。

The most important of these engineers was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose work in shipping, bridge-building, and railway construction, to name just three fields, both challenged and motivated his colleagues. He was the driving force behind a number of the hugely ambitious projects, some of which resulted in works which are still in use today. The son of an engineer, Brunel apprenticed with his father at an early age on the building of the Thames Tunnel. At the age of just twenty, he became engineer in charge of the project. This impressive plan to bore under the Thames twice suffered two major disasters when the river broke through into the tunnel when the second breach(决口)ourredin 1872, Brunel was seriously injured during rescue operation and further work was halted. While recovering from his injuries, Brunel entered a design petition for a new bridge over the Avon Gorge near Clifton. The original judge of the petition was Thomas Telford, a leading civil engineer of his day, who rejected all entries to the petition in favor of his own design. After considerable scandal, a second contest was held and Brunel's design was aepted. For reasons of funding, however, exacerbated(加剧) by social unrest in Bristol, the project was abandoned in 1843 with only the towers pleted. After Brunel’s death, it was decided to begin work on it again, partly so that the bridge could form a fitting memorial to the great engineer. The entire structure was finally pleted in 1864. Today, the well-known Clifton Suspension Bridge is a symbol of Bristol, just as the Opera House is of Sydney. Originally intended only for horse-drawn traffic, thebridge now bears over four million motor vehicles a year.16.【题干】Brunel was an important airplane engineer in Britain during the Industrial Revolution.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.【题干】Brunel was involved less in railway construction than in other engineering fields.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18.【题干】Brunel worked only on shipping, bridge-building and railway construction.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19.【题干】Brunel work was largely ignored by his colleagues.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20.【题干】Some projects Brunel contributed to arestill in use today.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21.【题干】Brunel became an apprentice with his father when he was very young.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22.【题干】The Thames Tunnel project was more difficult than any previous projects undertaken in Britain.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentionedCCBBAACGeothermal(地热)Energy1 Since heat naturally moves from hotter regions to cooler ones, the heat from the earth's center flows outwards towards the surface. In this way, it transfers to the next layer of rock. If the temperature is high enough, some of this rock melts and forms magma(岩浆). The magma ascends in its turn towards the earth's surface. It often remains well below the earth's surface, creating vast areas of hot rock. In such regions, there are deep cracks, which allow rainwater to descend underground. Some of the heated rainwater travels back up to the earth's surface where it will appear as a hot spring. However, if this ascending hot water reaches a layer of impermeable(不可渗透的)rock, it remains trapped, forming a geothermal reservoir. Ifgeothermal reservoirs are close enough to the surface, they can be reached by drilling wells. Hot water and steam shoot up the wells naturally, and can be used to produce electricity in geothermal power plants.2.A few geothermal power plants depend on dry-stem reservoirs which produce steam but little or no water. In these cases, the steam is piped up directly to provide the power to spin a turbine generator. The first geothermal power plant, constructed at Lardarello in Italy, was ofthis type, and is still producing electricity today.3.Most currently operating geothermal power plants are either "flash" steam plants or binary(双重的)plants. Flash plants produce mainly hot water ranging in temperature from 300° to 700°Fahrenheit. This water is passed through one or two separators where released from the pressure of the underground reservoir, it "flashes" or boils into steam Again, the force of this steam provides the energy to spin the turbine and produce electricity. The geothermal water and steam are then reinjected directly back down into the earth to maintain the volume and pressure of the reservoir. Gradually they will be reheated and can then be used again.4.A r eservoir with temperatures below 300° Fahrenheit is not hot enough to flash steam but it can still be used to generate electricity in binary fluid. The steam fromthis is used to power the turbines. As in the flash steamplant, the geothermal water is recycled back into the reservoir.。

1、Importance of Children's Oral HealthFebruary is National Children's Dental(牙齿的) Health Month, but in children good oral(口部的) care is critical every day. The first comprehensive study on the nation's oral health, released recently by the Office of the U. S. Surgeon General, calls dental and oral diseases a "silent epidemic (流行病)", even in children. The report states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental - related illness. In fact, a recent study pointed to dental care as the most common unmet health need among American children. To help counter this, the American Academy of Periodontology (牙周病学) (AAP) is launching an effort to educate children and parents about the prevention of dental diseases in children. "This is important because oral problems can impact self -esteem for children and lead to problems of eating, speaking and attending to learning," said Michael McGuire, president ofthe AAP.Common dental problems seen in children are cavities (龋洞) and gingivitis (龈炎), which are found in the majority of U. S. children. "When these problems are not caught early and treated, they can develop into more severe problems and cause unnecessary suffering," said McGuire. "However, much of the time, oral problems are avoidable problems."In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, a group of more than 120 dentists(牙医) volunteers to deliver dental care to thousands of low - income children each year with its Mobile Dental Unit that travels from school to school."According to the Surgeon General's Report, about 37 percent of children have not had a dental visit before starting school," said McGuire. When children don't see dentists, they miss the opportunity to have problems caught early before they develop into larger, more expensive problems to treat, and parents miss the opportunity to learn how to promote good oral habits in their children.Only in February should attention be paid to children's oral health.【单选题】。
