Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely(可能的)to involve themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and develop higher self-worth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them.Peer(同龄人)pressure has alw ays been a big part of the teens’ experience. Even the best father can’t completely protect their kids from the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗)the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, forexample.Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad. Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn’t, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kidscontinue to attend.Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their later teens. Fathers don’t get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents’ concern on what to do when they finish high school. Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job? A father’s guidance bringsa long-term perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions.24. Teen agers without father’s focus are more likely to __________.A. have higher self-worthB. experience some dangerous thingsC. become the best students in schoolD. resist all bad effects of peer pressure25. What does the third paragraph tell us?A. More teenagers pay no attention to their parentsB. Teenagers often treat their fathers as role modelsC. Teenagers never attend church with their mothersD. Fewer teenagers like to attend church with their fathers26. Which can replace the underlined word “perspective” in the last paragraph?A. point of viewB. jobC. schoolD. lots of concern27. What can we learn from the text?A. Fathers should make choices for teenagers directlyB. Teenagers care less about what their parents doC. Mothers have no effe ct on their children’s lifeD. Teenagers are greatly influenced by their fathersCSince his students began using Quizlet, English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning App, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has word sets for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.Thorne teachers at ColumbiaUniversity in New York City. Thanks to learning Apps, Jeff Strack, another English teacher, has also notice improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teaches at HostosCommunity College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile Apps totheir classes.Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use Apps, language learners communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.Thorne believes that Apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabulary words into Quizlet for others to use. He says some Apps also make it easy for students to know their languagestrengths and weaknesses. The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-g roup discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity.” he says. Many existing learning Apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other Apps: QR Codes,Socrative and Evernote.28. What do Strack and Thorne do to improve their teaching?A. They design learning Apps for their students.B. They don’t allow their students to use Apps after classC. They allow their students to use mobile Apps to studyD. They order their students not to use mobile phones in class29. According to the text, Apps can help language learners __________.A. take an active part in learningB. save much time and moneyC. remember their weaknessesD. improve personal designing skills30. What can we learn about the existing learning Apps?A. They have three types in totalB. They are too few to choose fromC. They are only designed for homeworkD. They are designed for different uses31. What can be the best title for the text?A. Great changes in science and technologyB. The use of mobile phones will be goneC. Ways to choose from different mobile AppsD. Better language learning with mobileAppsDAccording to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep areable to recognize human faces from photographs. The farm animals, who are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human faces from photos alone is novel. The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society: Open Science. Show the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.Initially, the sheep were trained lo approach certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the images for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle, though their ability to do so declined by about 15 percent —the same rate at which a human’s ability to perform the same task declines.“Anyone wh o has spent time working with sheep will know that they are intelligent, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers,” said Professor Jenny Morton, who led the Cambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recog nition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys.”Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, affect this ability.“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington’s disease, that develop over a long time and affect cognitive abilities. Our study gives us another way to monitor how these abilities change,” Morton said.32. According to the new research, what’s unusual about sheep?A. They have large brains.B. They can recognize their owners.C. They can tell animals from humans.D. They can recognize human faces from photographs.33. How did the researchers train the sheep?A. By guiding them to follow their handlers.B. By giving food rewards.C. By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.D. By showing photos of famous people.34. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Sheep have a higher face-recognition ability than monkeys.B. The sheep’s face-recognition ability stays the same when shown photos at any angle.C. The new discovery is beneficial to the study of cognitive ability changes.D. The sheep’s face-recognition ability may prevent some disorders of the brain.35. What’s the best title of the passage?A. A New discovery about Sheep.B. How Sheep Recognize Each Other.C. A Wonderful Scientist.D. The Life of Sheep.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

一阅读理解It has been discovered that after the age of sixteen, the number of our brain cells begins todecrease at a speed of several million a year. They simply die off. In certain types of activity, the human brain is at its highest point in the early twenties, when it has collected enough information to be able to use the vast number of cells freely in the most effective way. Pure mathematics is one of the fields in which this happens, and we know that Albert Einstein made all his world-shaking discoveries between the age of about 20 and 25, and spent the rest of his life tidying them up and arranging them. But in certain other types of activity (of which being an author is perhaps one), experience is more important than sharpness of brain, and there one usually finds that a person reaches his or her peak much later in life.Besides sharpness of brain and experience, here is another thing that is very important, and that is wisdom. One can have a very quick, inventive brain and plenty of experience, but if one uses these foolishly, one harms both oneself and others. Wisdom does not always come with age ——there are plenty of foolish middle-aged people about ——but the average person tends to learn wisdom as he gets older, usually by making painful of embarrassingmistakes. Leaning to be wise is basically learning what is not possible ;and what is possible but so difficult that it is not worth all the trouble one has to go through to get there. Mostly, it is learning about human nature ;howreal people behave and react, as against how one would like them to behave and react. One can read and hear lot of idealistic stuff about how to make the world a better place, which would be found if it was based on an accurate observation of human nature, but which is basically a waste of time because it is not.1. The writer came to believe that .A. it is always a waste of time to make plans about the futureB. it is human nature to make attempts on what looks impossibleC. one should always challenge the impossible to push the society forwardD. one has to use wisdom in deciding what is the best thing to do二、七选五1 .
