I had always been unhappy with my weight before I managed to lose weight.As a kid,I was bigger than everyone else around me and gained more weight after college.

One day,when I looked at myself in the mirror,I really disliked how I looked.I knew I had to make a change.Besides,my health was rapidly declining.I thought I

should try something to lose weight.

Now I can walk more than 50 feet without having to sit down.I can do laundry and clean my house.I can go to the grocery store without having to drive myself in the “fat cart”.I can do anything I want to without stressing about it.I am finally free!

If you also want to lose weight,my advice is to take small steps every day to reach your goal.When I started,160 pounds seemed so overwhelming to me,but I took small steps and made changes every day to get where I am now.It is not about a quick fix.You can’t climb Mount Qomolangma in one day.You have to do it one step at a

time!

Ashley Power’s mother b ought a computer for her when she was eight.When she was thirteen,she was surfing the Internet regularly,but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers to meet and talk.And one day she thought,“If I had my own website,I’d make it a really interesting site fo r teenagers.”

So,when Ashley was sixteen,she launched her own website,called GooseHead.Young people got excited when they searched on this website and step by step they

introduced the site to others and made more friends.She had no idea how big a success it would be,but three years later,the site was the most successful teen site in the USA!It was getting 100,000 hits every day,and Ashley had about 30 employees.

After a few years,the website closed down.Then Ashley,who lives in Los

Angeles,was asked to write a book called GooseHeadGuidetoLife.It’s safe to say that this is a book for teens that they’ll enjoy.The book is about how to design a website and start a business.It begins with a section called “All about

Ashley”,where Ashley tells readers what it is l ike to be the boss of a company when you are only sixteen.“I was so happy.But it was crazy in a lot of ways.I was stressed.I mean,I was only sixteen—I didn’t even have a car!If you were sixteen and you had your own company,you’d be stressed,too!”

In an interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers who wanted to start their own business,“Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them.And don’t

My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to make it to 45.He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.

letters to my children.Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had.Our kids don’t give up because they’re afraid to fail.They’re only afraid of failing us.They don’t worry about being disappointed.Their fear—as mine was until my father’s letter—is of being a disappointment.

In the workplace,at home,in all areas of life,looking for a reason to laugh is necessary.A sense of humor helps us to get through the dull times,cope with the difficult times,enjoy the good times and manage the scary times.

Six-year-old Hannah encountered one of the most frightening times of her life when she discovered she had cancer.And if she were to give life a shot,Hannah would have to endure painful,almost endless medical treatments.At one point she lost all her hair due to chemicals pumped into her tiny body.On days when she felt strong enough to get out,she often covered her head.

One day while shopping with her mother,Hannah donned a ball cap with a fake small ponytail sewn into the back.Unless one looked closely,she looked as if she had a full head of hair.Before long Hannah noticed a small boy staring at her as if he were trying to figure out what was slightly off about the girl.She tried to ignore him,but he followed her around the store.Finally,she took off her cap revealing her

shiny,hairless head.In a firm voice she warned,“This is what happens when you don’t eat your vegetables!”

I don’t know what became of the boy.As for Hannah,her sense of humor helped get her through one of life’s scariest times.

As entertainer Bob Hope once said,“I’ve seen what a good laugh can do.It can transform tears into hope.”And sometimes,a little more hope is all we need.
