A Happy Family

I have a happy family. Though there is only a little furniture in my home and everyth ing in the rooms seems rather disorderly, I love my home very much.

My father is an engineer, nearly fifty years old. As a Party member, quite often he w orks late into the night. He even forgets himself when he is reading. Once when having s upper, I found that the soup tasted watery. It soon became clear that my father, deep in his reading, had forgotten to put salt in the soup.

How time flies! I'm very glad to hear from you again. You want to know what is goi ng on in schools in China. In a word, everything has changed. Every school takes part in the campaign of reducing learning load. In the past, I used to study until 11,30 at week ends. But now I can arrange things' on my own, such as reading books, visiting museums, or taking computer lessons in my weekend days. In the evenihg I can watch news on T V, orread newspapers. What's more, my parents support me. They said although I was a s tudent, I didn't have to work all day long. I think the idea of reducing learning load is w ell accepted by everyone.

Smoking and Health

Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit all over the world. It was reported recently tha t smokers make up one quarter of the world population， while in China， 33.9 precent above the a

ge of 15 are smokers. It’s a very serious problem because not only the old， the youth， but also m iddle school students and girls have been engaged in smoking.

Many heavy smokers say they cannot leave off， although they know smoking is harmful to t heir health and they have tried again and again to stop.

Scientific research shows that smoking is not only harmful to smokers themselves， but als o a threat to public health， especially to women and children. The poisonous gas from smoking i s one of the major

causes of many kinds of diseases. Therefore， many countries have worked out laws forbidding s mokers to smoke in public places such as cinemas， hospitals and stations.

1998 National English Summer Camp for Middle School Students

As a lucky student, I attended the 1998 NESCMSS held in the beautiful seaside city of Yantai from July 25 to 30, which was sponsored by the English Coaching Paper Office. Over 100 students all over the country and 30 English teaching experts from home and a broad took part in the activity. All the campers were required to speak English. During th e four days, a series of English activities were held including the Second National English Debate for Middle School Students and the Third National English Speech Competition f or Middle School Students. We also visited some places of interest. A colourful English e vening was held on July 29. The camp provided us with a valuable opportunity to speak English, make friends and exchange learning experience. I found my English much improv ed at the end of the camp. Never in my life shall I forget the impressive days in Yanta
