A survey con ducted rece ntly in dicates that the pare nts who are proud of their childre n are twenty perce nt more tha n the childre n who con sider themselves as prides of their pare nts.

There exist two reas ons, which may acco unt for this subtle differe nee. First, con servative Chin ese pare nts are n ever accustomed to conveying directly how much they are proud of their kids. This tendency to con ceal feeli ngs hardly helps childre n develop a strong sense of self-c on fide nee. Second, the curre nt educati onal system excessively emphasizes the value of academic performa nee, thus forcing childre n to exte nsively believe that only by achiev ing excelle nt scores can they make their pare nts proud. This bias un fairly un derm ines the sig nifica nee of tale nts for art and sports, which easily frustrates children and renders them more likely

to un derestimate themselves.

Without the genuine en courageme nt from pare nts and the reversal of exam-oriented educational methods, a kid would never end up with a positive grow n-up.

Today I had an unusual experienee , which refreshed my mind. With pupils I spe nt two periods of time in a primary school, watch ing them lear n how to paint. A little girl named Amy, one student of the class, left me a deep impressi on with her unique painting.

In the first less on the teacher required the pupils to paint freely.

Namely , in any way they could draw whatever they ' like to. Amy was

the first one to have a try. I saw her think for a little while, take off her shoes, the n dip her feet slightly into the paint/ink. Much to my surprise, in a flash she man aged

to make a nice desig n on a broad piece of white paper/bla nket with both of her feet. What happe ned n ext, various of types of works pain ted by other childre n appeari ng before my eyes one by one ,kept me laugh ing with joy and amuseme nt.

Following a break, the second class began. smiling ,the teacher made

a brief comme nt, which was full of praise as well as appreciati on. After that ,she gave the stude nts some guida nee about the traditi onal way of painting. With her teachers ' words in mind , Amy practiced again.

Paintin g-brush in hand ,she sat a desk properly/straight ,pay ing full

attention to her work. This time , with ease and excitement she drew some birds flying high in the sky /sun.

Look ing back at the two ways of giving a class, I have to admit the teacher was well worth following in matters of cultivating f lowers ” in the spirit of originality. Given that children are of great imagination and elasticity in their growth , they are supposed to be give n as many cha nces and opport un ities as possible in the course of being educated so as to develop their potential to the full. Were the young always confined to the
