From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. Passage 4

When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks from other beasts. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dog would not eat what was caught without permission.

But now people in cities need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children. Passage 5

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the thing they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

36. The origin of language is _______.

A. a legend handed down from the past

B. a matter that is hidden or secret

C. a question difficult to answer

D. a problem not yet solved

37. What is true about words?

D. They are mysterious.

38. The real power of words lies in their _______.

A. properties

B. characteristics

C. peculiarity

D. representative function

39. By “association”, the author means _______.

A. a special quality

B. a joining of ideas in the mind

C. an appearance which is puzzling

D. a strange feature

40. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true?

A. He is no more than a master of words.

B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music.

C. He can move men to tears.

D. His style is always charming.

Passage 6

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are abo ut people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jerry really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it?s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends—or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don?t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “you?re a lucky dog”. Is he really on your side? If he says, “You?re a lucky guy” or “You?re a lucky gal”, that?s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There?s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn?t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn?t think you deserve your luck.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone?s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture (体态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and

think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

41. From the questions in the first paragraph we can learn that the speaker________.

A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him

B. feels he may not have “read” his friends? true feelings correctly

C. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend, Helen

C. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words

D. the word “dog” shouldn't be used to apply to people

CAL-FENGHAI-(2020YEAR-YICAI)_JINGBIAN

1.— Hi, Wang Xin, nice to meet you! — Hi, Liu Hui. A. Nice to meet you too. B. How do you do ? C. I'm fine, thank you. 第一说话人以nice to meet you (见到你很高兴)问候对方时,答语 应用 nice to meet you too 来回应,所以答案是A。 2.— How about going to the class together ? — A. Of course not. B. That sounds great. C. I don't like it. B。3.— Thank you for sharing this with me. — A. Nothing. B. You can share, too. C. My pleasure! My pleasure 是 It's my pleasure 的缩写,意为“不客气、很荣幸”。 You are welcome/don't mention it/Sure thing C。 4.— What will you buy for the Spring Festival ? — A. I will buy gifts for my family. B. Clothes are on sale. C. I want to go shopping. A。 5.— — It's dark brown. A. How about his weight ? B. Is he a tall guy? C. What color is his hair ?
