With camel racing being big business in Dubai, such a breakthrough means a lot.

Carbon Copy or Cc surprised everyone when she was born. For a start she had a grey stripe (条纹) running down her white back whereas her real mother, Rainbow, sported more of a gold and brown style. Then, when Cc started to play, she was found to be rather playful. Rainbow, however, had always been shy and disinterested.

A tiny village in Guatemala is now in great need of garbage. Elsewhere in San Pablo, the Philippines, the locals have nearly exhausted all the available supply of plastic bottles at the dump. Both of them are looking for interesting ways of using these materials.

In Guatemala, it all began with a volunteer, Laura Kutner, who wanted to help the village of Granados rebuild their dangerous school building. As there was no concrete (混凝土), Kutner and the village set about finding creative ideas with local resources.

Trashed plastic bottles formed the inside of the school’s walls. The bottles were filled with useless plastic bags to give them strength, and wrapped together into blocks by using wire (金属丝). A thin coat of cement and paint gave the finishing touch to the walls.

Finding the material to fill 6,000 bottles required for building the school was really not that easy. Each student had to find and fill at least 20 bottles with plastic bags. The process took many months and in the meanwhile, the kids cleaned up the hillsides so thoroughly that they started running out of garbage and had to go to neighboring villages.

Meanwhile in San Pablo, people gathered as many plastic bottles as they could find, and then used them to build themselves a completely new school. Filled with adobe (砖坯), these bottles are actually about three times stronger than concrete, maki ng this “bottle school” quite a strong building and much cheaper.

Glass bottles form the windows while flattened juice cases make the school’s roof (屋顶). PVC pipes between the bottles serve as air vents (通风口), and reduce the need for electric fans inside the classroom. Architect Illac Diaz is the person behind this amazing project which includes a plan to build 8 classrooms and a library.

While plastic bottles have been a convenient invention, poor recycle practices have made them the fastest growing source of garbage on our planet. Luckily, working models in Guatemala and the Philippines are being reproduced in many parts of the world.

25. When the school in Granados was rebuilt, _____.

A. all materials were ready in a few weeks

B. plastic bottles played an important role

C. more than 6,000 students came to help

A. It cost more money than expected.

B. It is completely made of plastic bottles.

C. It is equipped with many electric fans.

D. It used adobe to fill the bottles.

27. Which best describes the author’s attitude in the text?

A. Positive.

B. Dissatisfied.

C. Cautious.

D. Worried.

28. What would be the best title for the text?

A. No bottles, no schools

B. The different uses of recycled bottles

C. Your plastic bottles, children’s future

After the 4.8 m boat sank in 10 to 15 seconds, Mr. Gosnell decided to swim back to get help to Mrs. Herrick, who was holding on to its side. Mr. Gosnell, 42, said it was Mrs. Herrick’s calmness that saved their lives.

“The last pocket of air in the nose of the boat was almost gone, wi th both of us holding on. But Colleen remained amazingly calm. We made the decision that because I was the stronger swimmer, I should go for help.”

He swam against the water for more than an hour, broke two toes and ran on rocks to get help to save a drowning friend. Meanwhile, Mrs. Herrick, 53, said she counted stars and thought of her eight grandchildren. “I wasn’t afraid because I knew Mr. Gosnell,” Mrs. Herrick said.

Plastic surgery (整形手术) can be a money-making career choice for someone who wants the ability to make others more beautiful and offer life-saving techniques to address burns and extreme deformations (畸形). However, there are advantages and disadvantages in becoming a plastic surgeon.

Plastic surgeons are among the highest paid medical professionals. According to the Health Care Training Center website, plastic surgeons with one to two years of experience bring home an average of $237,000 per year. Those with three or more years of experience bring home an average of $412,000 per year, and plastic surgeons with several years under their belts may earn around $812,000 per year.

Plastic surgeons often get to sculpt entire faces or parts of the body. It is one of the more creative fields of medicine, as they are able to use their skills to shape skin and bones, especially when the work is done on someone in need, such as a burn victim or a child born with a deformed face. The ability to make vast changes in the way people view themselves is a rewarding highlight of this career.

Plastic surgeons must undergo quite a bit of schooling and strict certification (认定) processes before they are able to practice medicine. The schooling process is lengthy and costly, considering plastic surgeo ns must get a bachelor’s degree and then attend medical school. Upon graduating from medical school, plastic surgeons must then do five to six years of residency Once they enter the field professionally, many choose to become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which offers credibility as a plastic surgery professional.

Although plastic surgeons can do a lot for those who wish to look better, they are still sometimes respected less because of the work they do. Plastic surgeons work with men and women who want to make changes in their faces and bodies for vanity (虚荣) purposes. Because of the serious nature of any surgery, other surgeons may look down on plastic surgeons willing to work with patients taking such a serious risk for beauty.

D. social position

34. According to the text, plastic surgeons _____.

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
