This was because bacteria entered the cuts in the patients’ bodied and started infection. In some countries, up to 90 percent of patients died from infection after operations. In 1865, however, Joseph Lister, a British surgeon, found an answer to the problem. He used an “antiseptic” during and after operations. This killed the dangerous

bacteria and most of his patients lived. Since then, surgeons have used antiseptics in all operations.

Some 4000 Americans ambitions to become physicians are studying for their M. D. s abroad. Many were rejected by . medical schools simply because there was no room. Last year, for example, some 13,000 of 35,000 would-be physicians who applied to . schools were accepted. Of those who were turned down, well over 600 are trying the foreign route.

But gaining admittance to a good foreign school may be a problem. Summers with father were always enjoyable. Swimming , hiking , boating , fishing—the days were not long enough to contain all of our activities. Accused of neglecting this part of our education, my father instituted a summer school for my brother and me . However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected ,and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise in my father’s 18-foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to my mother, with enough food for a week. Passage 4

Questions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage:

The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has , at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon . Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945 , government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful.

The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to

obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

48. What is the main topic of the passage

A. Food and our health B Food and additives

C. Food and cancer D Food and culture

49 All of the following statements are true EXCEPT_______.

A Forty percent of cancer is caused by problems related to food.

B Researchers have known about the potential danger of food additives for many years

C. We eat some of the food additives directly and some indirectly

D Drugs are always given to animals for medicinal purposes

50. Why do farmers give drugs to their animals

A. to speed up the growth of animals

B To make the animals fatter

C to make the animals’ meat fit to eat

D To make the animals’ meat rich in nutrients

51. It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A scientist have made all the food fit to eat

B only in recent years have people found that the food is related to one’s illness

C all kinds of cancer are related to the diet

D some additives are harmful to our health

52. The w ord “ this” in the second sentence of paragraph 2 most probably refers to __________.

A farmer

B penicillin

C beef and poultry

D the fact that farmers often give penicillin to a beef

On Long-distance Education

This is the age of information with the rapid development of scien ce and

technology. We should adjust our life style to make use of the new inf ormation technology.

Nowadays, computers and televisions have already been used in the field ofeducation .We can go to college whenever we want and learn wha tever we like, without leaving our home even. This way of learning is c alled “long-distance”

education . This new way of learning is probably the most convenient w ay of

learning till now, by which we can save a lot of time and energy.

However, we have to admit that there are still many students who p refer tosit in the library or the classroom to study. For them , learn ing is not concernd with knowledge itself only. As far as those studen ts are concerned, going to

school regularly and studying with the help of the teachers and the cl assmates is far better than sitting alone in front of computers or te levision at home.

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. (分数:5.00) (1).Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?(分数:1.00) A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy. √ B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution. 新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集

大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集 Model Test 1 Passage One Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had 3 more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often. Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just 3 days! 1.What can be inferred from the 2nd paragraph? A. the author is a deaf B. the author is a blind person C.
