Lesson 1

1. None other than Joe Barton, a Republican congressman from Texas and a global-warming skeptic, upbraided BP managers for their “seeming indifference to safety and environmental issues.”

2. Surely, given the expense of the clean-up and the hit to B P’s reputation, the executives wish they could go back and spend the extra money to make Deepwater

Horizon safer. That they did not suggests that they ?gured the rig would be ?ne as it was.

3. In a little-noticed provision in a 1990 law passed after the Exxon Valdez spill, Congress capped a spiller’s liability over and above cleanup costs at $75 mi llion for a rig spill. Even if the economic damages—to tourism, ?shing and the like—stretch into the billions, the responsible party is on the hook for only $75 million.

4. But it would be foolish to think that the only risks we are still underestimating are the ones that have suddenly become salient.

Lesson 2

1. It is a cliche, as it is to talk of apocalypse and nightmare, but when something is beyond our experience, we reach for the points of reference we have.

2. Lest you should ever forget the smallness of being human, the iconic Mount Fuji, instantly recognizable yet somehow different on every viewing, is an extinct volcano.

3. It surprised me, over the following months that the gas attack seemed to dominate the national media coverage, whereas Kobe, after the initial weeks of horrifying footage, slipped somewhat into the background.

4. Rather than immersing ourselv es in the language of horror ?lms and the end of the world, when the time is right to try to glimpse this new territory, we might for thought reach for a book by Japan’s most popular contemporary novelist.

5. But we should resist the temptation to imagine panicking hordes buying up all the food and ?eeing the capital as the next part of our horror narrative.

Lesson 4

1. Bill Clinton was hard to miss in the autumn of 1970. He arrived at Yale Law School looking more like a Viking than a Rhodes Scholar returning from two years at Oxford. He was tall and handsome somewhere beneath that reddish brown beard and curly mane of hair. He also had a vitality that seemed to shoot out of his pores. When I first saw him in the law school’s student lounge, he was holding forth before a rapt audience of fellow students.

2. The way Bill tells the story, he couldn’t remember his own name.

3. To this day, he can astonish me with the connections he weaves between ideas and words and how he makes it all sound like music.

4. One of the first things I noticed about Bill was the shape of his hands. His wrists are narrow and his ?ngers tapered and deft, like those of a pianist or a surgeon. When we ?rst met as students, I loved watching him turn the pages of a book. Now his hands are showing signs of age after thousands of handshakes and golf swings and miles of signatures. They are, like their owner, weathered but still expressive, attractive and resilient.

5. I still didn’t know where I would live and what I would do because my interests in child advocacy and civil rights didn’t dictate a particular path.

6. The prospect of driving from one Southern state to another convincing Democrats both to support McGovern and to oppose Nixon’s policy in Vietnam excited him.

7. We both had to work to pay our way through law school, on top of the student loans we had taken out.

Lesson 5

1. The product was becoming more important to the company’s bottom line, accounting for 45% of the revenue that year, and it was also burnishing the hipness of the company’s image in a way that drove sales of Macs.

2. The conclusion he had come to: “The device that can eat ou r lunch is the cell phone.” As he explained to the board, the digital camera market was being decimated now that phones were equipped with cameras.

3. It ended up having neither the enticing minimalism of an iPod nor the convenient slimness of a RAZR. Ugly, difficult to load, and with an arbitrary hundred-song limit, it had all the hallmarks of a product that had been negotiated by a committee, which was counter to the way Jobs liked to work.

4. Since he often did that on the day new products went on sale, there were some fans hanging out in anticipation, and they greeted him as they would have Moses if he had walked in to buy the Bible.

5. Make the screen ?ve inches by eight inches, and you’ll rule the world.

Lesson 7

1.This Christmas season ?nds us a rather bewildered hum an race. We have neither peace within nor peace without. Everywhere paralyzing fears harrow people by day and haunt them by night. Our world is sick with war; everywhere we turn we see its ominous possibilities. And yet, my friends, the Christmas hope for peace and goodwill toward all men can no longer be dismissed as a kind of pious dream of some utopian.

2. If we don’t have goodwill toward men in this world, we will destroy ourselves by the misuse of our own instruments and our own power. Wisdom born of experience should tell us that war is obsolete. There may have been a time when war served as a negative good by preventing the spread and growth of an evil force, but the very destructive power of modern weapons of warfare eliminates even the possibility that war may any longer serve as a negative good.

3. Now let me suggest ?rst that if we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.

4. Now let me say, secondly, that if we are to have peace in the world, men and nations must embrace the nonviolent affirmation that ends and means must cohere. One of the great philosophical debates of history has been over the whole question of means and ends. And there have always been those who argued that the end justi?es the means, that the means really aren’t important. The important thing is to get to the end, you see.

5. Now let me say that the next thing we must be concerned about if we are to have peace on earth and goodwill toward men is the nonviolent af?rmation of the sacredness of all human life. Every man is somebody because he is a child of God. And so when we say “Thou shall not kill,” we’re really saying that human life is too sacred to be taken on the battle?elds of the world. Man is more than a tiny vagary of whirling electrons or wisp of smoke from a limitless smoldering.

Lesson 8

1. Sallee hadn’t minded having to come in when the clerk on d uty became ill that afternoon. And later, instead of calling in another employee for the evening shift, he’d remaine d until closing.

2. Sallee hesitated, but only for a second. At 27, he owned three video shops and was

a successful businessman. He’d often delayed closing for custome rs. There was no reason not to accommodate this one.

3. Shocked into the reality of what was happening, Sallee strained at his bonds, trying to turn away from the slashing knife. His attackers angrily pushed him out of the cramped closet. Sallee yanked his hands apart repeatedly until the cloth binding them gave way.

4. Haltingly, he raised his hand to his throat. As he pulled it away he saw through blurred eyes what appeared to be multiple hands, covered with blood. His life was ebbing away, but he could not move. He thought how sorry he was that his parents might have to ?nd him this way.

According to the data collected by the World Health Organization, Chinese smokers consume a third of the world's cigarettes. China’s national health authorities estimate over a million deaths from tobacco-related diseases every year. Smoking is bad for the health of not only the smokers, but also the non-smokers because of the polluted air. Although the nation's health ministry issued a regulation in 2011 to ban smoking in public places, it hasn't been "strictly enforced". At present, Chinese government explicitly requires officials at all levels not to smoke in public places such as hospitals, public transport or schools to set a good example for the public. Besides, they should actively promote the anti-smoking campaign and promptly stop other people from smoking in public places.

China is the largest developing country in the world and its population accounts for about 22 percent of the world’s total. In the mid-1980s, the economy of an overwhelming majority of the rural areas in China grew dramatically by virtue of their own advantages, but a small number of areas still lagged behind because of the constraints of their economic, social, historical, and natural conditions. The Chinese government, while working on all-round economic and social development, has nationwide implemented a large-scale program for development-oriented poverty relief in a planned and organized way. With the main objective of helping poverty-stricken people solve the food and clothing problems, this program has gone a long way toward alleviating poverty.
