Just before Christmas in 1971, a German girl called Juliana was flying over a big forest of America. The plane was flying high in the sky.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Juliana found herself falling through the air. She closed her eyes. She was sure that she was going to die.
She fell 3,000 meters. When she opened her eyes again, she found that she had landed in a tree in the middle of the forest. She was not dead! To her surprise, she was not only alive(活着), but she wasn't even badly hurt. She was still sitting in her seat. She was holding a bag of sweets.
She got out of the seat, and climbed down the tree. But she could see nobody else. She was alone except for a few dead bodies here and there.
She began to walk. At first she had nothing to eat except the sweets. Later she found a little fruit. She had never seen this kind of fruit before. She found the fruit was safe after she saw some monkeys eating it.

If you don't use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak, when you use them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that .Yet many people do not seem to know that memory（记忆力）works the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance（机会）to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault（过错）. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame（受责备）, and few of us know that it is just his own fault.
Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them in a little notebook. People celebrate（庆祝）birthdays in almost every country on Earth. And they celebrate them in many different ways.
In China and in Japan, for example, the arrival of the New Year is more important than a person's birthday. So everyone adds a year to their ages on New Year's Day, instead of on their birthdays.
In Brazil, the special birthday food isn't cake, but special candies. In China, it's long noodles—for long life, In Iceland, people have pancakes with candies rolled inside them on birthdays.
In Britain, a birthday is an all-day celebration . At school, the birthday child is lifted up and "bumped" by his classmates. This means the child is lifted by the feet and arms and bumped to the ground, once for each year and once for good growth. In Israel, the same custom（风俗）is followed, except the birthday person is lifted and lowered while sitting in a chair.
In Holland, children not only get presents, but they give things out, too. They give cakes, coolies and candies to their classmates and teachers on their birthday.
In Mexico, it's good luck to give birthday greetings as early in the day as possible. So it's usual for the birthday child to be woken up at mid-night by friends singing birthday songs.
In India, birthday celebrations also begin before dawn（黎明）. Prayers（祈祷）and blessings must be said before morning comes.
In Thailand, two tall candles are lighted the night before a birthday. One is as the tall as birthday person. If it goes out early, it's bad luck. Another custom of Thailand is that they buy live （活的）fish and birds for the birthday person and then the birthday person frees the animals, and it brings good luck.
