Mr. Brown is a very white man. He was looking rather green the other day. He has been feeling blue lately. When I saw him, he was in a brown study. I hope he soon be in the pink again.

当比喻一个人勇猛时,会描述他为“ He is a lion. ”英国历史上查理一世因其“勇武善战”被誉为“the lion-hearted king ” (狮心王),史称“狮心查理王”。正因为英语词汇lion 的这种语义,在学术界有“威望”的人,也被称为“ a literary lion ”,同汉语的“执牛耳”、“泰斗”。[11] (P219-222)英国白豪地以狮子作为白己国家的标志,英国国徽的中心图案是lion ,因此英国又被称之为“ the British Lion ”,所以to twist the lion ' s tail 意为“向英格兰挑战” 。“ Lion and Unicom "(“雄师” 代表英格兰,“独角兽”代表苏

中西颜色词的文化差异及翻译

中西颜色词的文化差异及翻译 Cultural Differences of Chinese and English Color Words and Their Translation Abstract:The relationship between language and culture are closely linked. Language is the base of culture and is the constituent of culture. Language as a mirror reflects the culture of a nation, and like a window shows all the contents of the culture. On the other hand, the culture is not only the basis of the language’s existence, but also the lifespring of language’s metabolism. So understanding of a culture requires the understanding of the corresponding language and vice versa. In fact, language is an abstract concept. So by what way can we observe the connotation of different culture through language? This thesis analyzes this from a set of special words----color terms. Because of different customs, environments, religious beliefs, ethnic psychology, politics and economics, the understanding and the feelings of color words are different. The same color often has different meanings in various cultures and it reflects the cultural differences. Through comparing the difference of culture between Chinese and English, we can understand different translation methods so that we can improve our English ability. Furthermore, it can promote the communication between China and western countries. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first part mainly tells about the significance, literature review and purposes of research on the cultural connotations of color terms between English and Chinese. The second part expounds the reasons of cultural differences between English and Chinese. The third part mainly talks about the ways of translating color words. At last a conclusion of the thesis is made naturally. Key Words: Color words; Cultural differences; Translation

Abstract:In the human language, there are a lot of words about color, such as black, white, red, yellow and so on. 浅析中英文中颜色词的文化差异

Title: Talking about differences of color words in cross-cultural Abstract: Man has a common feeling about colors, because color words can not only express the natural gorgeous colors, but also reflect the view of value and the aesthetic standard of a people. To this point, color words have more than their literal meanings. They also have rich associative meanings. This article firstly analyzes the cultural differences of color words from the national psychology, historical tradition, religious beliefs, habits and customs, emotion of the color. And then it probes into their influences on the language with detailed discussion, pointing out the similarities and differences which exist in the language performance. Because the cultural difference has brought barriers on translation and international communication, finally the paper discusses the problem of how to deal with the cultural differences in human communication and proposes some processing ways as well as some translation methods in the translation process. Through analyzing and understanding some differences between two nations, we are trying to avoid the communication barrier in the international communication so that we can achieve the goal of successful communication.
