阅读理解:Each day, computers help millions of people do their jobs more effectively. For example, they can help managers decide on a future course of action, and they can then help with the follow-up checks on performance to see if planned goals are being achieved. By using accurate and timely facts supplied by data base management software, a manager can do a better job of identifying problems and opportunities. The facts retrieved by such software can then be manipulated by a spreadsheet package to help the manager plan to alternate courses of action. And managers may not need to spend as much time in controlling when a computer can respond with a triggered report if actual performance varies from what was planned. The time saved in controlling may allow managers to give more attention to employees' concerns, and this, in turn, may result in improved morale (士气).

But employment benefits certainly aren't restricted to managers. Healthcare researchers and other scientists also use computers to conduct research into complex problem areas that couldn't otherwise be studied. Lawyers use online legal data banks to locate precedent (先前的) cases in order to serve clients better. Salespeople can receive more timely information about products in stock, can promise customers that their sales orders will be handled promptly, and can thus improve their sales performance because of the computer system. And the job duties of some office and factory workers have changed from routine, repetitive operations to more varied and appealing tasks through computer usage. For example, office workers who understand text processing, computing, and data communication usually have vital roles and are given critical office functions to perform.

Do you know what the word "jazz" means? Today it is used to talk about various styles of music. In the early 1900s, however, jazz was a kind of folk music played by African Americans. This early jazz was played by people in their daily lives simply for their own enjoyment. Indeed, whenever people got together, jazz could be heard.

Jazz was a mix of styles from Europe and Africa. From Europe, the first jazz musicians borrowed ideas about melody and harmony, and the instruments they used. From Africa, they borrowed ideas about rhythm. Jazz rhythm was very strong ?it made people want to clap their hands or tap their feet. African rhythm had a different beat from most of other music. For example, instead of

One-two-Three-four, the beat might be one-Two-three-Four. It was this rhythm that made jazz sound different. There was no other kind of music like it in the United States at that time.

oday, jazz has become a way for many people to express themselves musically. It is also a way for many people to make a lot of money by performing. The audience for jazz is international. Many of the world's biggest jazz festivals now take place in Europe and Asia. Fans pay a lot of money to see one of their favorite musicians in concert or buy one of their recordings. After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C), or D). You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter with a tick.

The trouble with most schemes to deal with the problems created by the automobile is that they underestimate the vastness of their undertaking. The car serves a variety of needs other than transportation and, for all its concrete reality, its greatest powers may be symbolic.

The automobile provides a special place for people. Next to bathroom, it is the nicest, easiest, most acceptable place to be alone. People sing, scream, pick their noses, talk to the radio, and do all manner of other odd and personal things within the isolation of their cars. Surely the vast queues of car drivers would not suffer their daily bumper-to-bumper (一辆接一辆地) frustrations if there weren't something pleasurable about being alone in a car.

The automobile allows exercise of power. Driving represents a challenge to be overcome; there is a constant parade of tiny decisions that await your action and that certify you as skilled and needed ?the master of your ship. It makes perfect sense, therefore, that getting a driver's license has become a milestone of the passage to the adult world. If you drive, you are competent, responsible, powerful, your own man.

The automobile magnifies the sense of spontaneity in life. A decision involving travel can be made instantaneously if a car is available. Thus spontaneity becomes a proof of freedom: there is no requirement to be bound by schedules of any sort, and car becomes the ideal transmitter of impulse. As Detroit well knows, buying a particular

car is frequently an impulsive decision ?logically enough, since the car itself stands for the glorification of impulse.

36.Which of the following is the focus for most traffic experts?D

A. Traffic system

B. Variety of needs.

C. Modern life.

D. Transportation.

37.The second paragraph shows the automobile provides _____B____.

A. modern symbols

B. privacy

C. an lonely place

D. manhood

38.Getting a driving license shows ____A_____.

A. the perfect sense to be a man

B. the spontaneity to do anything

C. the power to do anything

D. the skills to be a master

39.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A

A. Most car drivers can not suffer the bumper to bumper frustration.

B. The decision to buy a car is often made by the sense of spontaneity.

C. It's challenging to become a driver of your own car.

D. The word bathroom often reminds people of the place for privacy.

40.We can infer from the passage that ____D_____.

A. cars are so cheap that everybody can buy one

B. cars provides much convenience

C. cars provides freedom for people to travel

D. cars are also bought for psychological needs

This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

The English language is the lingua franca (通用语言) of business to an extent not imaginable even a decade ago. Three-quarters of the world's mail, faxes and emails are in English. And each of those figures is growing.

English is now the official language of a number of international companies. The EFTA organization has English as its official language despite the fact that none of its six member countries uses it as a native language. The European Community (EC), by contrast, so complicates its affairs by using all nine official languages that 60% of its administration budget goes on translation and interpretation, despite the fact that most of its staff speak English or French.

The first foreign language the Japanese learn is English. Every Japanese child who finishes secondary school will have had an average of eight years of English language instruction, for a total of 1 000 hours. There are over 700 English language training schools in Tokyo alone, as many as there are in all of England. A further 13 000 Japanese students undertake courses, many of which emphasize language as well as technical skills, in America. The shortage of Japanese managers who are able to speak other European languages is far greater, that is a major factor in attracting Japanese firms to Britain rather than anywhere else in the EC.

41.According to the author, the English language _____C____.

A. has been the lingua franca of business for a decade

B. began to be used in business one decade ago

C. has been more widely used in business in recent years

D. was not imaginable to be used in business ten years ago

42.What is true about the EFTA organization according to the passage?C

A. The EFTA organization has nine member countries.

B. The EFTA is part of the European Community.

C. The EFTA is an international company with English as its official language.

D. All the member countries of the EFTA use English as their native language.

43.The author's attitude towards the using of all the nine official languages in the EC would be ____B_____.

A. appropriate

B. critical

C. positive

D. neutral

44All of the following statements are true EXCEPT that __A_______.

A. there are as many language training schools in Japan as in England

B. there are a lot of Japanese students studying in America

C. Japanese take English as their first foreign language

D. Finishing secondary school, Japanese children will have had about 1 000 hours of English stud

45It can be inferred from the passage that ___C______.

A. the European Community will use English and French as its official languages

B. the Japanese government will increase the total number of hours in English study for secondary school students

C. Japanese businessmen would prefer to do business with Britain rather than other European countries

D. Japanese language will probably become the lingua franca of business all over the world

January, 2006 Dear Susan 31

I'm awfully sorry I forgot to meet you at the airport last Saturday. We had an end-of-term party in our bedroom the night before. We were so proud of our final exam results that everyone drank like a fish all night. I felt dizzy all day Saturday and had little sense of what I should do that day. It was in the evening that I realized I forgot to meet you at the airport. Since then, I've tried to call you several times, but I feel you are still angry with me and wouldn't answer my phone call
