inspired his life in politics在短语中充当定语,修饰the man.

2).…the President showing me from which direction the British had come when they set fire to the White House in 1814.

该句为独立主格结构,在整个句子中充当伴随状语。

3). A couple of times, when I bent over my notes, Clinton looked over to them, apparently seeking acknowledgement that he was sticking to his script.
