This year marks an anniversary very close to my heart. Fifteen years ago, along with women and men from around the world I attended the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. The message from that conference rang loudly and clearly, and still echoes across cultures and continents: Human rights are women?s rights, and women?s rights are hu man rights.

One hundred and eighty-nine countries represented at Beijing adopted a Platform for Action that pledged to increase women?s access to education, healthcare, jobs, and credit, and to protect their right to live free from violence. We have made great progress, but there is a long way to go.

以2010年11月1日零时为标准时点的第六次全国人口普查，已经顺利完成现场登记、复查和事后质量抽查等工作，现将快速汇总的主要数据予以公布。

China conducted the 6th national population census with zero hour of November 1, 2010 as the reference time. The field enumeration, check and post-enumeration survey of the census has been successfully completed, and data of high quality were obtained. At this press conference, we are to release major figures through advance tabulation.

一、人口总量

I. Total Population

这次人口普查登记的全国总人口为1339724852人，与2000年第五次全国人口普查相比，十年增加7390万人，增长5.84%，年平均增长0.57%，比1990年到2000年的年平均增长率1.07%下降0.5个百分点。数据表明，十年来我国人口增长处于低生育水平阶段。

Total population as was enumerated through the census was 1,339,724,852 persons, an increase of 73.90 million persons or 5.84 percent over the 10 years since the 2000 census, or an annual growth of 0.57 percent. This was 0.5 percentage points lower than the annual growth of 1.07 percent registered between 1990 and 2000, demonstrating a steady low fertility in the population growth of China over the past decade.

II. Size of Family Households

这次人口普查，31个省、自治区、直辖市共有家庭户40152万户，家庭户人口124461万人，平均每个家庭户的人口为3.10人，比2000年人口普查的3.44人减少0.34人。家庭户规模继续缩小，主要是由于我国生育水平不断下降、迁移流动人口增加、年轻人婚后独立居住等因素的影响。

In the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, there were 401.52 million family households with a population of 1244.61 million persons. The average size of family households was 3.10 persons, or 0.34 persons less as compared with the 3.44 persons in the 2000 population census. But that?s what we?re talking about. That?s why we?re here. And we arrived here because of all of you and your unwavering belief that we can — and we will — beat this disease.
