Cell Phones

Believe it or not, cell phones have been around for over a quarter of a century. The first commercial (商业的) cell phone system was developed by the Japanese in 1979. But cell phones have changed a lot since that time. The early cell phones were big and heavy but they have been developed into small and light palm-sized models. There have been huge developments in their functions, too. We have had cell forwarding, text messaging, answering services and hands-free use for years, but now there are countless new uses, such as instant access to the internet and receiving and sending photos.

Cell phones have become very common in our lives; recent statistics suggest as many as one in three people on the planet now have a cell phone, and most of them say they can’t live without one. Cell phones are used in every area of our lives and have become a necessary tool, used for essential arrangements, social contact and business. They have made it easier to call for help on the highway. They have made it possible to keep in touch with people” on the move” when people are traveling.

Cell phones have made communication easier and have reduced the need for family arguments. We can use cell phones to let our family know we’ll be late or if there’s a change of plan or an emergency(紧急情况)。Cell phones have eased the worries of millions of parents when their teenagers are out late, and they can now contact their children at any time.

This does not mean that cell phones are all good news. They have brought with them a number of new headaches for their owners: it costs a lot to replace stolen phones, something that is becoming a frequent occurrence, and have you ever seen such huge phone bills? More serious, however, is the potential health problem they bring: there are fears that radiation from the phones may cause brain tumor (肿瘤)。This may be a time bomb waiting to happen to younger people who have grown up with cell phones that they simply can’t live without.

Energy Cycle (能量循环)

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak(顶点). For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语) as: “Get up , John! You’ll be late for work again!” the possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If our energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (鼓起干劲) and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed for a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.

11.Dr. Kleitman explains that a person is difficult to get up in the morning probably because of ___________.

A. his own laziness

B.his own energy cycle

C. his own habit

D. his bad rest in the evening

12.According to the passage, people’s energy peak may come __________.

13. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should __________.

A. change his energy cycle

B. overcome his laziness

C. get up earlier than usual

D. go to bed earlier

14. A leisurely yawn and stretch when getting up can ___________.

A. help to save your energy

B. help to control your temper

C. help to arrive at the energy peak

D. help to keep you clear all day

15. which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

B. Kleitman explains the reason for different energy peak time.

C. Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.

Sports

①what fun it is to jump into a pool or go swimming in a river in summer! How joyful and relaxing it is to have a game of table tennis after a day of study at school! And how exciting it is to play or watch a close game of basketball or volleyball!

②All over the world, millions of people take part in different6 kinds of sports. Sports are perhaps the most popular form of relaxation that almost all can enjoy, whether boys or girls, men or women, young or old.

③Some people seem to think that sports and games are unimportant things that people do, at times when they are not working, instead of going to the cinema, listening to the radio, or sleeping. But in fact sports and games can be of great value, especially to people who work with their brains most of the day. They should not be treated only as amusements(消遣). Sports and games build our bodies, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us healthy. But these are not their only uses. They give us valuable practice in helping the eyes, brains and muscles to work together.

④ In table tennis, the eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction, and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and sends its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where the players wants it to go. All this must happen with great speed, and only those who have a lot of practice at table tennis can do this successfully. For those who work with their brains, the practice of such skills is especially useful.

⑤ sports and games are also very useful for character-training. From their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage, discipline and love of one’s country; but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child’s character as what is learned through experience.

Choose the best word(s)for each numbered blank and mark A, B, C, or D on ANSWER SHEET 1.(10 points) Among the thousands of business schools now operating around the world you would be hard-pressed to find one that doesn't believe it can teach the skills of entrepreneurship. However, of the people who immediately 1 to mind when one thinks of entrepreneurs——Bill Gates, Richard Branson or Oprah Winfrey, for example—few have done more than 2 a speech at a business school. 3 , a recent study by King's College in London has suggested what many intuitively 4 : that entrepreneurship may actually be in the blood—more to do with genes than classroom experience. All of which 5 the question—does an entrepreneur really need a business-school education? Not surprisingly some of the best-known schools in the field have a 6 answer to this: they don't actually profess to create entrepreneurs, 7 they nurture innate ability. Or as Timothy Faley of the entrepreneurial institute at Michigan's Ross School of Business 8 it: “A good idea is not enough. You need to know how to 9 a good idea into a good business.” Schools do this in a number of ways. One is to 10 that faculty are a mix of classic academics and businesspeople with experience of 11 their own successful firms. They can also create “incubators” where students 12 ideas and rub shoulders on a day-to-day basis with the external business world, receiving both advice and hard cash in the form of investment. Arguably such help is now more important than ever. The modern entrepreneur is faced with a more 13 world than when Richard Branson began by selling records out of a phone box. According to Patrice Houdayer, head of one of Europe's best-known entrepreneurship schools, EMIYON in France, new businesses used to move through a 14 series of growth steps—what he terms garage, local, national and international. Now however, 15 the communications revolution, they can leapfrog these stages and go global more or less straightaway—encountering a whole new 16 of problems and challenges. In this 17 Professor Houdayer maintains that the increasingly 18 nature of MBA classes can help the nascent entrepreneur in three ways: by plugging them into an international network of contacts and advisors, by preparing them for the pitfalls and opportunities 19 with dealing across different cultures and by 20 them to the different ways that business is conducted around the globe.

Think again. Leasingcan end up being just as expensive as buying. Most peoplethink about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They'reright-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were tolease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If youwere to buy the same car, you would pay about $400per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But afteryour lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many peoplewant to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwisebe able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you mightbe able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buya used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model.
