(1~5/共5题)Part BRead the following text carefully and them translate the underlined segments into Chinese.

Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2.

Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese.During the traditional wedding ceremony, the bride and the bridegroom promise each other lifelong devotion. Yet, about one out of four American marriages ends in divorce. 1 Since 1940, the divorce rate has more than doubled, and experts predict that, of all marriages that occurred in the 1970s, about 50% will end in divorce. The U.S.A. has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, perhaps even the highest.

What goes wrong? 2 The fact that divorce is so common in the United States does not mean that Americans consider marriage a casual, unimportant relationship. Just the opposite is true. Americans expect a great deal from marriage. They seek physical, emotional, and intellectual compatibility. They want to be deeply loved and understood. It is because Americans expect so much from marriage that so many get divorced. They prefer no marriage at all to a marriage without love and understanding. With typical American optimism, they end one marriage in hope that the next will be happier. With no-fault divorce laws in many states, it is easier than ever to get a divorce. 3 Some American women stay in unhappy marriages because they don′t have the education or job experience to support themselves and their children, but most American women believe that, if necessary, they can make it alone without a husband. All things considered, Americans have little reason to continue an unhappy marriage.

Which marriages are most likely to end in divorce? Marriages between people with low incomes or limited education and marriages between teenagers are at greatest risk. The number of divorces between couples with children under the age of 18 is declining, and almost 45% of divorcing couples are childless.

4 When a couple gets divorced, the court may require the man to pay his former wife a monthly sum of money, which depends on the husband′s income, the wife′s needs, and the length of the marriage. If the woman is working and earns a good salary, she may receive no money at all. Occasionally, the court decides that a woman should pay her husband money. About 10% of American women outearn their husbands.

5 If the woman has totally supported her husband during the marriage, the court may decide that she must continue to support him after the divorce, which is a rather new concept in the United States.

In the past, the Park Service focused on making the big scenic parks more 1 and comfortable for tourists. Roads were paved to allow "windshield visitors" to experience the grandeur of nature without leaving their cars, and a 2 number of hotels and grocery stores were permitted to open 3 the park boundaries.

Now this trend is changing. Plans have been made to 4 the parks to their natural condition as much as possible. The objective of such a move would be to secure the preservation of the parks for future generations, 5 allowing present-day visitors to experience pure wilderness, 6 from any obvious signs of civilization—an opportunity which is quickly disappearing in the twentieth century. 7 plans call only 8 a reduction in the number of cars 9 into the parks each day, but 10 , tourists may have to leave their cars at the gates and then either visit the park on foot 11 use park 12 . 13 , stores and hotels may no longer be allowed within park boundaries and even the number of campgrounds may be restricted.

Denali National Park in Alaska serves as an excellent 14 for this new type of park, one which has been changed only slightly from its 15 state. There is only one road, unpaved in 16 , which cross 17 Denali. As car traffic is strictly limited, many visitors experience the magnificent 18 and wildlife from a park bus. There are no hotels or stores and only seven campgrounds within Denali"s 3,000 square miles. This 19 isolation offers backpackers, canoeists, and other sport enthusiasts a 20 physical and psychological challenge.

At the European Commission in Brussels, they have a joke about the work interpreters do—Languages", they say, "have nothing to do with interpretation, it helps to know them. "Anyone thinking of becoming an interpreter would bear this so well in mind. Translating languages, especially in a political context, involves far more than mere linguistic ability.

To work in an international organization, such as the United Nations, you need to be approved by one of the various international translators or ′interpreters′associations. To achieve this, you must experience rigorous and lengthy training, either at an accrediting organization′ s own school, or on a postgraduate course at university. But a qualification in languages is not the only route

into the job. At London′s University of Westminster, candidates get offered a place on the interpreter′ s course if they can show that they have "lived a bit", in the words of one lecture. Young people who have just left university often lack adequate experience of life.

The University also looks for candidates who have lived for long time in the countries where their acquired languages are spoken. They are also expected to have wide cultural interests and a good knowledge of current affairs. This broad range of interests are essential in a job which can require interpreting discussions of disarmament(裁军) on Monday, international fishing rights on Tuesday, multinational finance on Wednesday , and the building and construction industry on Thursday. Interpreters also rely on adrenaline (肾上腺素)—which is caused by the stress and challenges of the job—to keep them going through their demanding schedules. Many admit that they enjoy the buzz of adrenaline they get from the job, and it′s known that their heart rates speed up while they are working.

It′ s also a job with its own risks and excitement. Interpreters are needed in war zones as well as in centers of international diplomacy, like the U. N.

The automobile has many advantages. Above all, it offers people freedom to go wherever and whenever they want to go. The basic purpose of a motor vehicle is to get from point A to point B as cheaply, quickly, and safely as possible. However, to most people, cars are also personal fantasy machines that serve as symbols of power, success, speed, excitement, and adventure.

In addition, much of the world′s economy is built on producing motor vehicles and supplying roads, services, and repairs for those vehicles. Half of the world′s paychecks are auto related. In the United States, one of every six dollars spent and one of every six non-farm jobs are connected to the automobile or related industries, such as oil, steel, rubber, plastics, automobile services, and highway construction.

In spite of their advantages, motor vehicles have many harmful effects on human lives and on air, water, land, and wildlife resources. The automobile may be the most destructive machine ever invented. Though we tend to deny it, riding in cars is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives.

Since 1885, when Karl Benz built the first automobile, almost 18 million people have been killed by motor vehicles. Every year, cars and trucks worldwide kill an average of 250 000 people — as many as were killed in the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki —and injure or permanently disable 10 million more. Half of the world′s people will be involved in an auto accident at some time during their lives.

Since the automobile was introduced, almost three million Americans have been killed on the highways —about twice the number of Americans killed on the battlefield in all US wars. In addition to the tragic loss of life, these accidents cost American society about $ 60 billion annually in lost income and in insurance, administrative, and legal expenses.

Streets that used to be for people are now for cars. Pedestrians and people riding bicycles in the streets are subjected to noise, pollution, stress, and danger.

Motor vehicles are the largest source of air pollution, producing a haze of smog over the world′s cities. In the United States, they produce at least 500% of the country′s air pollution.

A break through in the provision of energy from the sun for the European Economic Community (EEC) could be brought forward by up to two decades, if a modest increase could be provided in the EEC′s research effort in this field, according to the senior EEC scientists engaged in experiments in solar energy at EEC′s scientific laboratories at Lspra, near Milan.

The senior West German scientist in charge of the Community′s solar energy programme, Mr. Joachim Gretz, told journalists that at present levels of research spending it was most unlikely that solar energy would provide as much as three per cent of the Community′s energy requirements even after the year 2000. But he said that with a modest increase in the present sums devoted by the EEC to this work it was possible that the breakthrough could be achieved by the end of the next decade.

Mr. Gretz calculates that if solar energy only provided three percent of the EEC′s needs, this could still produce a saving of about a billion pounds in the present bill for imported energy each year. And he believes that with the possibility of utilizing more advanced technology in this field it might be possible to satisfy a much bigger share of the Community′s future energy needs.

At present the EEC spends about $2.6 millions a year on solar research at Lspra, one of the EEC′s official joint research centres, and another $3 million a year in indirect research with universities and other independent bodies.
