It is universally acknowledged that understanding plays an important role in communicating with people. It can help avoid conflict and make for better relationships.

There was a time when my parents were occupied with their own business. I was often left alone, dealing with a variety of problems in life and in study when I need their assistance. One day I couldn’t tolerate this any longer and then got into a quarrel with my parents. Much to my surprise, they told me that my grandfather was seriously ill, so they had to attend to him while trying to raise money in order to pay for his medical expenses. How ashamed I felt of what I had done to them. I shouldn’t have shouted at them without getting to know the truth or relating to their feelings. As for my parents, having understood my pains, they promised to set aside some time to accompany me however busy they might be.

It is mutual understanding that contributes to harmony and close relationships. Only if we can put ourselves into others’ shoes will we be able to create a world full of love and peace.

W：What jobs have you done in the last ten years?

M：Many kinds of jobs. I was once an engineer and later a teacher. Up till now, I have been a government official for three years.

W：Maybe there’ll just be too many of them on the roads. The air will be so seriously polluted that nobody will be able to breathe normally.

M：Exactly. People will have to rely on trains.

W：Why do you say that?

M：Well, we won’t be able to use cars, and the airports take too much space. That leaves trains.

W：Huh. So do you think there’ll be more efficient tr ain systems between cities.

M：Sure. They’ll enable to travel between cities in a matter of hours. They may even be trains going under oceans to connect the main continents.

W：Under the oceans? Get out of here! I get nervous enough flying on a plane.

M：Before making a plan of sightseeing trips for you, I’ll be glad to know if you have anything special in mind that you would like to see.

W：Well, as a matter of fact, we were discussing this question last night. We all spoke of the Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the world. We wouldn’t leave China without seeing that if it was possible. How far is it from here?

M：Only about 80 kilometres. Just an hour and half’s trip by car. We’ll put down the Great Wall then.

W：Good. And we talked a lot about the Summer Palace. We would like to see that, too.

M：All right, the Summer Palace. Well, and there are a number of places that I think you will find interesting：the Temple of Heaven, the Former Imperial Palaces and Ming Tombs.

W：I like to go to fashion shows. They give you ideas about what kinds of clothes are coming into fashion and which ones are going out.

M：It’s nice to see those pretty models walking down the runway in beautiful clothing. But to be frank, I don’t think those clothes are practical for everyday wear.

W：I think we’re beginning to see some practical Italian ready-to-wear collections being shown these days. And they reach the American stores just a few weeks after the major fashion shows.

W：Hello. Welcome to our class for beginning computer users. Typing skills are required for this course. In a moment, you’ll begin typing the text I’ve placed on the stand next to each keyboard. First, however, I’d like you to look at the screen in front of you. There are no words on it yet, but it does contain two important objects, the end mark and the action point. You’ll be learning more about these later. Right now, please place you fingers on the keyboard and prepare to use it as if it were a typewriter.
