The Confucius

The Confucius is a masterpiece in our history, and it is regarded as the central work of the Confucianist. The scholars usually mention Confucius the same breath with the great ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. However, Socrates is executed by Athens democratic regime. It is said that the spirit of freedom stop him escaping. Confucius had never been persecuted by the government, but his outspoken is another kind of freedom. What The Confucius tells us is the true meaning of the life in a easiest way. It teaches us how to lead a happy life as our minds dreaming for. Confucius asserts that we should be filial, and the filial piety becomes a traditional virtue in China. But on nowadays, more and more people get unclear cognition about the filial piety. So what is the filial piety in Confucius?mind? The master said ,?while a man?s father is alive, look at the bent of his will; when his father is dead, look at his conduct. If for three years he does not alter from the way of his father, he may be called filial?. It?s much different from the definition about the filial in today. We modern people just regard supporting as the filial piety, but it is far from what Confucius suppose it to be. We should do more to be a filial person. The Confucius also carry forward the virtues proper to humanity and the rites of propriety. But his virtue is not a way to forgive others?mistake without any principles. The Confucius tells us to treat others equally and logically, and to leave a little private space to each other. We can also learn how to study and how to be a virtue person from The Confucius. Those precious virtues may not be valued by some people nowadays, but The Confucius helps us appreciate the wisdom to treat the unfair in our life.

The Great Learning

I think that I gain a lot after reading the book The Great Learning. It teaches to illustrate illustrious virtue, to renovate the people, and to rest in the highest excellence. The Great Learning shows me how to behave, it points out a way to pursuit the real moral. If you wish to illustrate illustrious virtue throughout the kingdom, you first need to order well your own states. If you wish to order well your state, you should first regulate your families. If you wish to regulate your families, you are supposed to cultivate your persons firstly. If you wish to cultivate your person, you need to rectify your hearts. Then you should be sincere in your thoughts so that you can rectify your hearts. You ought to extend to the utmost your knowledge to sincere in your thoughts. Such extension of knowledge lay in the investigation of things. It?s not a easy thing to do those all, but I believe that if I follow the way the book advices, I will finally behave like the great ancients. Which part of the book make the most profound impression on me is the part about how to cultivating the person by rectifying the heart. If a man be under the influence of terror, or under the influence of fond regard, or

under that of sorrow and distress. When the mind is not present, we look and do not see; we hear and do not understand; we eat and do not know the taste of what we eat. This is what meant by saying that the cultivation of the person depends on the rectifying of the mind. Maybe I can not make big contributions to governing the country, but I can try me best to cultivate myself. The Great Learning makes me alert that I begin to rethink the reason why I study in the school for many years. It?s not only for the mark or for a good job after school. It?s supporting a chance for me to know the world better and to ennoble me than before. That?s what I need to do in the future.

The Republic by Plato

Written by Plato, The Republic is a Socratic dialogue. It?s is one of the most influential works of philosophy and political theory. It is also the longest of his works with the exception of The Laws, and is no doubt the greatest of them. Plato?s strategy in The Republic is to first explicate the primary notion of societal, or political, justice, and then to derive an analogous concept of individual justice. In Plato?s opinion, an ideal society consists of three main classes of the people--producers, auxiliaries and guardians. A society is just when relations between these three classes are right. That means each group should do what they are supposed to do, each group have different right to keep the society running. The argument of The Republic is the pursuit of justice. “A just county is one in which the organization of the politics, or city-state, mirrors the organization of the tripartite soul. Thus the three classes in the politics correspond to a part of the soul respectively and the auxiliaries correspond to the spirited part of the soul. Each of the three classes, according to their engagement in their particular corresponding part of the soul, has a virtue most appropriate to it. The guardians must be wisdom, and the auxiliaries must be courageous, and all three must exhibit moderation.” Plato tries to convince people that a country should be governed by the philosophers so that it can be kept long-term peace and order. Though he made efforts on describing how perfect the country will be as he imagined, I think that it can just come true in a dream. Because as we know, that philosophers mostly caring about the real meaning of the life, not how to make people live peacefully. If we want to something consummately, we need to use some skills. Obviously, those philosophers do not have the ability on how to govern the country. Even so, we can not ignore the great effect Plato had made to us. His depiction about the ideal society in The Republic expresses many people, his Platonic love attracts the youngs very much.

The Limits of Human Understanding by John Locke

John Locke ( 1632.8.29 ~ 1704.10.28 ), British philosopher, founder of empiricism , and is the first comprehensive exposition of constitutional democracy thought, i n philosophy and political areas have important influence. In this book, John wants to solve the problem about the origin of the human knowledge. He believe in the empiricism, that people get knowledge from experience and feeling. Before John, the French philosopher Descartes had came up with the idea that people get knowledge by nature. However, John do not agree with such an idea. To refute Descartes?opinion, he came up with a new theory of tabula rasa. The theory tells that our first psychological states is just like a white paper when we were born. And all the knowledge we learn is from posteriority experience. In this book, John divide experience into two parts, one is external experience and the other is internal experience. The external experience is a consequence that the things happened in the objective world act on the human sense organ, John called this feel. The internal experience is regarded as human?s mental activity, John called this introspection. Besides the experience, he still divided the objects i nto two kinds. One is absolutely objective, those which will not changed by human?s willing. On the other hand, another is subjective for those which are changed by human?s willing, such as smell and color. John Locke did a great contribution to the found of the empiricism. His work had a big effect on Voltaire?s thoughts. In my opinion, his idea about the knowledge is unprecedented and influence me a lot. We all born with no cognition about the world. As growing up, we begin to know more and more about world, that?s a wonderful process. No matter what John want to show, what I learn from the book is to cherish the time, and learn from the world diligently.

Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes is a outstanding delegate of the European modern times materialistic principle philosopher. He did not agree with the idea that the god exists, and he tried to proclaim the essence of the religion. Hobbes destroyed the belief which is depend on the Bible and swayed spiritual pillar of the whole feudal society. The book Leviathan was written in English Civil War. Hobbes wanted to talk about his view of the validity of the government and social basis. His overall project is to explain by what reasons a commonwealth may govern men, and then to establish the best possible way for this government to function in order to accommodate the desire of its denizens. The book was divided into four parts:1) of man, 2)of commonwealth, 3)of a Christian commonwealth, and 4)of the Kingdom of Darkness. In some ways, Hobbes?s thought is the same with Confucius. For example, they both propose to be man we should not do to others what we would not want them to do to us. Hobbes believes that the commonwealth is nothing but an …artificial man?. He claimed that a man?s main

goal is to protect his own life through his rational capacities he reasons that the best way to do this is to establish a state with a power great enough to protect all who consent to live under it. Depending on such a cognition, Hobbes described a conceive about …Leviathan?, and its proper form and functions. According to Hobbes, the best form of government is a monarchy, since in any other form of government the sovereign power is not strong enough to protect the subjects from outside invaders and from themselves. He also pointed out, in the book, that we need social contract if we want to keep the society peaceful. Then the law is the guarantee to implement the social contract. Leviathan is composed of human, and governed by human, but it still will …eat? people. So Hobbes thought the highest ideal of human is to put Leviathan in a cage for real peace.

The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Jean-Jacques Rousseau is one of the most famous French enlightenments. In this book, he shared his idea about human nature. He believed that an ideal society established between people and between non-human and government contract relationship. As the same as John Locke, Rousseau thought that the power of the government comes from the people?s acceptance. In The Social Contract, Rousseau began with the nature of human, and talked about the person, the society, the country and the government. Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains. This man believes that he is the master of others, and still he is more of a slave than they are. In Rousseau?s opinion, to give up is to give up freedom, human rights and obligations, abandoned life. He was against the government using violent to govern the people. Rousseau came up with an idea which is named the social contract. What Rousseau praised highly is a system like ancient Rome, which is called Golden Liberty. He insisted that a person can only get position by election so that he will make the justice, enlightened, and all good characteristics popular with people. However, Rousseau thought that the human is not sovereign as a individual. Thus …born free?will brings extreme thoughts that everyone regards himself as others?master. Such a society will be full of violence, and it will make human lose his protection. But in Rousseau?s imagination, the society under social contract should be a legislative society, and it can support human protection. The government is a performer of the law, and the law is made by people in the society. It can make certain that the law will not be used to persecute the people. Rousseau?s thoughts had epoch-making significance in that period, and the thoughts made great contribution to the development of the society.

Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and passion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister. Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart.
