are four choices marked A),B),C)and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single

line through the centre.

Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passages:

Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do

not come from ‘another world’. They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either.

All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the ‘outside’ may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dream may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket,

have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping resting on the

ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today.

So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has affect

on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and

it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of

their families, and prisoners of freedom.

To show you how that is happening while you are asleep and how your wished or needs can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a

piece of absorbent cotton. He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girl friend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his

hand!

There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dream mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. Mother words, a dream is a way

of having your wishes carried out.

21. Our dreams_____.

A) are simply messages from another world

B) are a curious look into the future

C) have little connection with our emotions, wishes or needs

D) are to some degree caused by some of our feelings

22. I f the covers have slipped off your bed, you may dream that ______.

A) something comfortable happens to you

B) you are staying in freezing surroundings

C) some people are making noise

D) you have nothing on at all

23. When the back of a man’s hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent

cotton in the experiment, he would dream that________.

A) his hand was being struck by someone

B) his hand was gently touched by his sweetheart

C) his hand was badly hurt by someone

D) somebody was wiping sweat off his body

24. When a person feels hungry, he is likely to dream of ______.

A) wonderful fairies B) lovely young girls

C) fine food and drinks D) his family members

25. Some scientists’ explanation of dreams _____.

A) does not give a outlet for our wishes

B) gives us an exact answer to the problem

C) offers a meaningful approach to the problem

D) is widely accepted and thought highly of by the public

Passage 2

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passages:

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called ‘the weaker sex’, or, if men want to please them, ‘the fair sex’. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the

age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need

4.5 minutes. Women’s times are always slower than men’s, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls.

One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only

16. The first ‘Tarzan’ in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller .

His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59.1seconds, which is 37.4 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching

men up. Conditions are very difficult now, and sport is much more serious. It

is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone (荷尔蒙) injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sports has such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!

C) men are not always stronger and faster than women

D) men are faster and stronger than women

Passage 3

Questions 31 to 35are based on the following passages:

Thousands of years before Columbus came to the New world, the American Indians entered North America by crossing a narrow strip of land that once connected Alaska and Siberia. The migrants entered a new world in which there were no people at all. But there were many animals to hunt, and

there were forests where nuts, roots, and berries could be gathered.

When the Europeans came to the New World, the Indians, at first, taught

the settlers how to plant corn, bake fish, make canoes, and smoke tobacco. In return, the whites introduced horses, guns, gun-powder, alcohol. But at last,

there were struggles for land, and the struggles could have only one result---

war. When the wars were over, all Indians were moved to large tracts of land called reservations. Now, some of them, embittered(激怒)by past mistreatment, are determined to preserve their tribal life; some wish to modernize the reservations. Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passages:

To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when

it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain.

Its first use was as a shade against the sun!

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century B.C..

We know that umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella

was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that

the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain

were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared

in France, and later on in the England.

By the eighteen century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that women’s umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colours.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,
