So they have very strong imagination of connecting things together. Some recent studies have shown that women are better than men in the "date" memory. That is the reason why they are able to remember all the birthdays, anniversaries, and even some of the great day of unimportant friends. No matter whether these results are true or not, I am afraid that this is not women's most outstanding ability. Women's most remarkable ability is a long-term tracking of some seemingly unimportant data to form their own baseline and pattern. Once the patterns of these data points are significantly different from the baseline she is familiar with, she knows something unusual. In their daily life, women do not consider the difference between causality and correlation. They believe in the principle: "There must be something wrong out of something unusual." 功能语言学与翻译 一般说来,语言是一种有规则的系统结构,是一种代码。它由不同的成分组合而成,可用来表达语义。同时,语言又是一个用于交际的系统,可以运用不同的代码形式来指称具体的和抽象的东西,并可创造具有交际价值的信号。在翻译的过程中,有时译者不得不做出选择:一是放弃与语境息息相关的交际价值而保持形式上的等值;一是放弃与语境无关的纯语义等值而保持交际功能等值。这种选择事实上是在“逐词译”与“意译”之间做出的选择。从功能语言学的角度看,选择就是意义。对于译者来说,在做出选择之前,必须弄清楚翻译的目的,同时要明白哪些语言形式可以使预期的目的得以实现。在这一点上,Halliday 提出的功能语言学给我们提出了思考的切入点。 Halliday认为,从语言的使用角度看,情景语境中有三个因素最为重要,它们影响着我们的语言使用。这三个因素是:语场、语旨、语式。这三个因素是情景语境的组成部分,称为语域变体。语场指的是正在发生什么事,所进行的社会活动的性质、特点、语言所谈及或描述的是什么,透过动词类型、主动被动结构、过程参与者等得以体现。语旨指的是谁是交际者,他们的基本情况、特点、地位、角色、关系等,透过语气动词和副词,譬如“但愿”、“应该”、“可能”和评价词汇,譬如“可爱”、“恐怖”等予以体现。语式指的是语言在交际中所起的作用,包括交际渠道和修饰方式,透过语句结构和词汇的连贯方式予以体现。语场、语旨和语式跟语言三个纯理功能相互联系:语场体现了语言的概念功能,语旨体现了语言的人际功能,而语式则是语篇功能的具体体现。语篇功能是三大功能中的核心,它使语言与语境发生联系,使说话人只能生成与情景一致和相称的语篇。研究语篇必须联系其语境,因为在实际生活中,通常都是先有语境,才会有语篇。语境与语篇是互相依存的;特定的语境要求特定的语篇,特定的语篇创造了特定的语境。在交际过程中,语言的意义通常是根据语境来确定的。同一个语言单位在不同的语境中有不同的意义。 例如,要表示“要求某人关门”这一意义,在英语中可以说" Close the door." Key words:functi onal linguistics;translati on studies;translati on quality assess m ent;model 一、系统功能语言学述介 如果说形式主义与功能主义是语言研究的两大传统的话,那么在当代Chom sky创立的转换生成语法(T ran sfo r m ati onal2generative Gramm ar)无疑是前者的杰出代表,而后者则集中体现于H alliday等建立和发展的系统功能语言学(语法)(System ic2functi on2 al L ingu istics)。作为当今最有影响的语言学理论之一,系统功能语言学渊源于P ro tago ras和P lato等以人类学为本的语言研究传统,着眼于语言的人本性、社会性一面,师承F irth倡导的以意义而非形式为语言研究的方针,秉承M alinow sk i关于语言研究中的语境思想,继承H jem slev的语符学和布拉格学派的语言功能思想,因而始终把语言的实际使用——语言在一定情景下的应用,即情景中的语篇(tex t2in2the2 situati on),确立为语言探索的对象,始终把语言在实际情景语境中表达的意义,即语言发挥的功能作为语言研究的主要关怀,始终把语言交际视为一种社会人(social m an)所从事的社会行为(social behavi o r),而这种行为是在包含着情景、语言(形式)、功能这样三个系统的行为框架(behavi o ral fram ew o rk)里运行,因此把对情景、语言(形式)、功能等系统的描写及其彼此之间关系的阐述(如语言形式与情景之间的建构和限定:一定的语言形式建构一定的情景语境,而一定的语境又决定了选择一定的语言形式;意义(功能)与措辞(w o rding)之间的选择与体现:意义与语言形式即措辞间的选择范围,形式对功能的体现关系)作为其语言研究的出发点和归宿。 就其语言哲学观而言,顾名思义,系统功能语言学集中表现在对语言系统的重视和语言功能的关注,并自身相应地而分为系统语言学和功能语言学两块。就前者即系统语言学而言,它视语言本身是一个庞大而复杂的由许多子系统构成的符号系统(sem i o tic system),这些符号并不是一组记号,而是一套系统化的意义潜势(m ean ing po ten tial),客观而全面地描写语言系统的构成和运作,研究人们如何通过使用语言交换和表达意义,自是其研究的应有之题和主要任务(朱永生,2001:7)。具体一点说,系统(功能)语言学对言语的探索(而不是对抽象的、剥离语境和语用的语言系统的描写)首先是建立在把语言交际置于前述包含着语言、功能、情景这样一个行为框架(系统)里予以阐述,并为此必然地对语言、功能、情景三大系统及其各自的支系统和支系统里的子系统,即系统的系统进行描写(如对功能支系统里的概念功能、人际功能、成篇功能子系统;语言(形式)支系统里的及物性、作格、语气、情态和主述位、信息等子系统;情景支系统里的文化语境和情景语境即语域等子系统的描写和阐释。)。概言之,语言的系统思想贯穿于其语言研究的始终。就后者(即功能语言学)来讲,其语言哲学观则是语言研究的功能思想,视语言在实际情景语境中所发挥的功能为探索的中心。它在研究、甄别和梳理语言的各种具体用途、功能后(如祝愿、庆贺、批评、表扬、警告、说服、安慰等),将其概括和抽象为语言的三大元功能(m eta2functi on),即前述的概念、人际和成篇功能。概念功能指的是人们用语言来谈论对世界的经验(包括内心世界),用语言来描述周围发生的事件或情形。从功能与形式体现关系的角度看,概念功能 ? 5 4 ?
