Americans spend a lot of time and money on physical activities ranging form bowling to skiing. The object of these activities is not only enjoyment. The greatest work-related stress is sudden, unexpected loss of a job. Research on unemployment since the 1930s (concentrating almost entirely on men) has linked it to mental and physical illness and to problems in family functioning.
When people are unemployed, two major sources of stress are the loss of income (with its financial hardships) and the effect of this loss on their feelings about themselves. Workers who derive their identity from their work, men who define manhood as supporting a family, and people who define their worth in terms of their work’s dollar value lose more than their paychecks when they lose their jobs. They lose the peace with themselves and their self-esteem.
The ability to cope with unemployment depends on various factors. Those who cope best have some financial resources to draw on – savings, the earnings of other family members, and so on. They do not blame themselves for losing their jobs or see themselves as failures but assess their situation in more objective terms. They have the support of understanding, adaptable families and can draw on outside resources, like friends.
Women are as likely as man to feel distressed over loss of a job, as was shown by a study of former employees of a plant in Indiana that closed in 1982. Both the women and the men who had lost their jobs reported such physical ailments as headaches, stomach trouble, and high blood
pressure and felt less in control of their lives. The women’s respon ses confirm another study, which found that a woman’s sense of pride and power is more strongly related to her paid work than to her personal life.
A crucial factor in adjustment to losing a job is the context in which a person sees the situation. People who can look at such a forced change as an opportunity to do something else or as a challenge for growth can develop emotionally and professionally. They may change not only jobs but the entire direction of their careers.
