新场古镇位于成都平原西部与邛崃山脉的山丘坝交汇处，新场东边至成都58公里，西边临邛古蜀道可通康、藏；南由水路直达新津、嘉洲，北连出江、天宫庙、花水湾和西岭雪山，《大邑县志》记载：以县城为中心出西门，经黄土桥、灯笼场、清源市、扇子街，过出江，入邛崃的西禅寺、土地垭、三坝场等，再回大邑兴旺场，双河场，越横山岗，通天全县。新场镇原名清源市，清代雍正年间因逐步取代了明嘉靖以来新场镇头堰村的扇子街集市，兴场设市，故人称“新场”。新场镇是临近农产品的集散地。至今在新场镇的民间还保留有古时“一新、二唐、三灌口”的说法，意思是在大邑的场镇中规模最大、经济最繁荣的首数新场镇。同时还有“石人对石虎，银子万万五”的民谣，意为新场的石虎与邛崃市茶园乡西禅寺前的石人之间的XXXX 处一个宝藏，藏有大量的金银。还有一个民谣是“大水冲出三千贯”，至今距石虎庙约一华里处还以一个“三仙观”（三千贯）的小奄。从这些世代流传的口头俗语中，足以看出古时新场镇商品经济的繁荣。1
