Part II Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are four passages in the part. Read them and make the best choice based on what you read. (每题2分)

(1)

A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as English. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook----but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gain will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with.

Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A. have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty at speeds of between 240 and 250 w.p.m. with about 70% comprehension. Minnesota claims that after 12 half-hour lessons, one a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around 500 w.p.m. with 70% or more comprehension, you will be doing quite well, though of course any further improvement of speed-with-comprehension will be a good thing.

When you practice reading with short passages, do not try to take in each word separately, one after the other. It is much more difficult to grasp the broad theme of the passage this way, and you will also get stuck on individual words which may not be absolutely essential to a general understanding of the passage. It is a good idea to skim through the passage very quickly first (say 500 words in a minute or so) to get the general idea of each paragraph. Titles, paragraph headings and emphasized words (underlined or in italics) can be a great help in getting the outline of the passage. It is surprising how many people do not read titles, introductions or paragraph headings.

16. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 1?

A.You would read any book at the same speed.

B.You would read physics books more rapidly than economics books.

C.Yu can raise your average reading speed by the same percentage whatever kind of material

you read.

D.You can raise your reading speed with some kinds of materials but you can’t with others.

17. The average untrained native English-speaking student at the University of Minnesota can read English of average difficulty .

A. at about 245 w.p.m.

B. at about 400 w.p.m.

C. at about 500 w.p.m.

D. at about 600 w.p.m.

18. You will be doing quite well if you can read books of average difficulty .

A.at about 500 w.p.m. with no loss of comprehension

B.at about 245 w.p.m. with no loss of comprehension

C.at about 450 w.p.m. with no loss of comprehension

D.at about 300 w.p.m. with no loss of comprehension

19. When you practice reading with short passages .

A.you should carefully read one word after another so as to have a thorough understanding of

the passage.

B.it is a good idea to read very quickly first to get the general idea of each paragraph

C.you had better read the passage slowly to get the theme

D.you should look up every unknown word in the dictionary to check its meaning

20. According to the writer, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A.Readers usually pay great attention to titles and paragraph headings.]

B.Many people overlook titles and paragraph headings while reading.

C.Titles and paragraph headings are not so important as emphasized words.

D.Titles and paragraph headings have nothing to do with the general idea of the passage.

(2)

In parts of the Middle East, several years may pass between rainstorms. There is thus a serious shortage of water, so that desalination plants have to be used to make fresh water from sea water.

A new scheme is now being tested. If it is successful, it will be of great interest and value to many countries. The first step in the scheme is to find a flat iceberg about 1.5 km long and 300 to 400 meters wide. The best place to look is in Antarctica, where the icebergs tend to be more regular in shape than those from the arctic. Engineers would start by cutting one end of the iceberg to the arrow-head shape of a ship. This would reduce the resistance of the iceberg to the sea when it is pulled by ships. The iceberg would be wrapped in plastic and cloth to reduce the rate of melting as it passes through warm seas. At the same time, a protective ridge around the top would

keep water melted by the sun. this would prevent the heat of the sun from further melting the iceberg.

A French engineering company, backed by Arab money, has prepared plans to send an iceberg to Saudi Arabia at a cost of U.S. $21 cents a cubic meter. (This is below the current cost of getting water from a desalination plant and is the major attraction of the scheme.) Ships will have to pull an iceberg for over 7,000 miles and the voyage will last at least six months. It is estimated that a large iceberg would produce at least 70 billion liters of fresh water. The average daily consumption of water is about 225 million liters per million people. Thus in a country of about eight million people, a large iceberg would provide enough fresh water for more than a month if it could be stored and distributed efficiently.

21. In paragraph 1, “desalination plants” are most probably “”.

A.devices that can produce manmade rainstorms

B.things that live in the sea and carry much water

C.grasses and trees that can give out water

D.factories which remove salt from sea water

22. All the following measures are taken to carry out the new scheme EXCEPT .

A.reducing the rate of melting of the iceberg

B.reducing the resistance of the iceberg to the sea

C.training people to look for iceberg in the Arctic

D.cutting one end of the iceberg into the arrow-head shape of a ship

23. By shaping one end of the iceberg, engineers would .

A.make the iceberg easier to pull

B.reduce the rate of melting in the warm sea

C.keep the iceberg from being melted by the sun

D.help to wrap it in plastic and cloth

24. According to the passage, the major attraction of the new scheme is that .

A.it costs less than getting water from a desalination plant

B.it is much easier than getting water from a desalination plant

C.the water it produces is cleaner than that from a desalination plant

D.it takes less time than building a desalination plant

25. It is estimated that on the average country of about four million people needs every month.

A. 22.5 billion liters of water

B. 30 billion liters of water

C. 35 billion liters of water

D. 27. billion liters of water

Tea drinkers are among the wisest people in this world if what a Chinese philosopher once said is true. The wise man Nin Chang once said: “Tea is better than water; it awakens thought, comforts the mind, and especially because it does not cause a man to say things for which he may feel sorry when he is not drunk.”

And 2,000 years after its qualities wee first identified in a Chinese handbook, tea is still a favorite. Under the support of Buddhist monks, who wanted to spread tea instead of wine, the tea-drinking ceremony spread throughout China.

Only in 1650 did the first Englishmen come to know of the “strange drink” called “tay”. They heard of many legends from the Dutch and Chinese of the health qualities of tea. One

famous legend told how tea originated and got its shape. The monk Bodhidharma fell asleep under a tree when he was supposed to be in meditation. He was so ashamed when he awoke that he shaved his eyebrows and threw them on the ground. Soon they grew into a bush; the leaves when dried and mixed with boiling water gave a drink that would prevent sleep.

Tea growth was introduced into java in 1684 by a German naturalist and doctor, Andreas Cleyer. In Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) the now familiar tea plantations because economically significant only after a plant disease had completely damaged coffee plantations. The Dutch carried the first load of tea to Europe in 1620. They called it “tee” and charged their European customers extremely high prices.

The new drink became popular. The English entered into the tea trade and made enormous profits too. In fact, tea was so expensive that many English homes kept tea leaves until they squeezed every drop of flavor from them.

Many famous doctors at the time acknowledged that tea was the perfect drink for giving pleasure and preserving health. “A man might live a hundred years if he drank Chinese Tay” said one physician.

Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls.

Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in types of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women----especially women in their childbearing tears actually delay economic development and result in lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency.

To solve the problem, they have suggested that the working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers wee given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better.

The suggestion has been flatly rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled. A hundred persons in a big city were questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what the situation. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives resign their jobs, if it meant higher wages for themselves.

Some other people have suggested another way called “phased employment” theory. The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive 75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to home forever.

31. Some union officials have suggested that women should return home because .

A.all of them are employed in unsuitable types of work

B.most skilled male workers are now unemployed

C.their participation in work has a bad influence on the economic development

D.nowadays no one can take care of children except women

32. Some union officials have suggested that if women give up their jobs, .

A.they should be allowed to attend school to be trained

B.their jobs should be taken over by the male members of their families

C.their children should also leave their kindergartens

D.the male employees in their families should receive double wages

33. According to the passage, the suggestion that women should return to housework was .

A.welcomed by both men and women

B.welcomed by men only

C.welcomed by women only

D.opposed by most men and women

34. From the passage we can see “phased employment” means .

A.two or more women share the same job

B.women stay at home on weekdays and go to work on weekends or holidays

C. a woman should resign her job forever if she has a child

D.women are allowed to take leave from their jobs during their childbearing years

35. According to the “phased employment” theory, during a woman’s leave from her job .

A.her work should be done by her husband or brothers

B.either her husband or her brothers will be given double wages

C.her family can still keep the normal level of income

D.her family’s income level will be a little lower than it normally is

Reading Comprehension (20’) Passage 1 Libraries have traditionally been the public `s access to the important sources of information that are necessary to function in today `s highly technical world. That function has been called into question by the fast-paced development of digital media over the past several decades. In order to continue to fulfill the public interest, libraries everywhere are forced to develop means of granting access to these expensive new services to average citizens. In the past, the publishing industry maintained the rights of the libraries to freely distribute published materials because the libraries bought so many of their books. Because the new electronic publication can easily be copied in their entirety by the patrons of library, the publishing industry is reconsidering its former advocacy of the library system. There have even been attempts to stop libraries from distributing digital media. In addition to waning(衰落的) cooperation of the publishing industry, there is the problem that the newer forms of information are much more specialized than those which they replace. Deciding how to divert already limited resources is increasingly difficult as the options multiply. Whereas a single reference index may have covered an entire field in the past, now there are frequently several specialized indexes available in electronic form. In order to continue to make use of the newer technology, the libraries must decide which materials are most useful to the majority of their patrons. There are many different solutions being applied, but only the process of trial and error will determine the most effective strategy. 21. The best title for this text would be ____ A. The Challenge for Today `s libraries B. Information Technology and the Consumer C. The Benefits of the Digital Revolution D. Changes in Information Technology 22. It can be inferred that the problem with the new technology is that _____ A. it is not intended for use by libraries B. it is too complicated C. it is not as useful as traditional books D. it is used as a political tool 23. I gave up all my other hobbies, such as collecting stamps, reading novels, playing football, etc, and spent all my spare time reading poetry and writing it. This habit of writing poetry on every possible occasion(场合) soon got me into trouble at school. If a lesson did not interest me, I would take out my notebook and start writing poems in class. Of course I did this very carefully, but it was not long before I got caught. One day while I was busy writing a poem during a geography lesson, I looked up to find the teacher standing over me. He looked rather angry because I was not paying attention. He tore my poem up, and warned me not to waste time in his lesson. All the same I believed that I had written a good poem, so that evening I wrote it out again from memory. Not long after, I read about a poetry contest(比赛) and I decided to send in my poem. Weeks later, long after I had given up hope, I got a letter telling me I had won the first prize. Everyone at school was very

If you have ever had an operation, you were first put to sleep with a gas you breathed or by a chemical injected into your body. Medical workers in the United States of America and Europe have used these methods in operations since 1842. They have been valuable in preventing great pain which would have occurred if the patient had not been put to sleep. The Chinese, however, have been able to perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. They use a method called acupuncture. This involves sticking flexible needles into certain parts of the body. The person who performs the acupuncture must know how to insert the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. The needles are not necessarily inserted near the region where the pain is to be prevented. Today, the Chinese are learning to be more efficient and skilled in their use of acupuncture: but more research should be done before the Chinese can explain more convincingly how it works. A surgical patient is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients chose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation, whereas the chemicals may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day. If the person has chosen acupuncture, the needles are inserted in the proper places. After several minutes, the patient is examined to see if he or she can feel pain in the region where the operation will be performed. If no pain is felt, the operation is performed. The patient is fully awake and can feel the surgeon working. Some doctors in the United States have been skeptical about acupuncture. However, it is already being used to a very limited extent in this country. It will be interesting to see if the method becomes adopted here.(10分) 11.1). Much of the world’s coffee is grown in Brazil. Not long ago an unseasonable frost swept through coffee plantations there. The result affected people in many countries for a long time to come. At first, reports of serious damage were received. These led to a sharp rise in the price of coffee, which had not been a highly profitable crop. Growers in other countries made extra efforts to increase their exports to profit from the expected shortage. However, they were hampered by smugglers who wished to avoid government controls. The price of coffee fell slightly. Then large restaurants and hotels began to buy coffee to build up stocks for future use. The price rose sharply and public resistance developed. Housewives organized a boycott of coffee. This led to a rise in the price of tea and a fall in the price of coffee. Much to the dismay of growers, the price fell sharply. Their response was rather surprising. Instead of selling their stocks of coffee, they began to buy on the open market. Their motive was clear. They wanted to force the price of coffee up, and one way of doing this was to reduce the amount of coffee available for sale to the public. Luckily for coffee-drinkers, this move failed. Restaurants and hotels stopped buying coffee. Large numbers of small growers had to sell their crops to keep alive. The large growers found that they were buying more coffee than they were growing. They abandoned their efforts and let the normal law of supply and demand decided the price. Meanwhile, millions of people had changed to cheaper drinks and would not switch back to coffee.(10分) 16.1). Who suffered most from the recent unseasonable frost?(2分) (A) The restaurants and hotels.
