A

The media provides us with the observations and experiences

from which we build up our personal understanding of the world

and how it works. Much of our view of reality is based on media

messages. The media, to a great extent, gives us our sense of

reality.

Freedom of the media carries with it certain responsibilities of honesty, fairness, accuracy and accountability. The power of the media to create and destroy human values comes with great responsibility.

The media is powerful in the political system, having great influence on politics and on forming social change. The power is to decide who will communicate what to whom. Television can greatly influence the election of a national leader on the basis of his or her image.

Professional journalists do have a code of ethics (道德标准). Journalists make a judgment about what's safe and appropriate to report, which often involves difficult choices. German sociologist Max Weber distinguishes between “ethics of conviction”and “ethics of responsibility”. According to the latter (ethics of responsibility), journalists must take into account the foreseeable consequences of their reporting, and the impact it will have on society. The former, on the other hand, asks journalists to tell the truth, regardless of the consequences. According to Weber, both ideas of ethics should be considered.

Without doubt, information is power, and the big owners of the mass media are very powerful people. Television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and websites are, largely, owned and controlled by profit-making businesses. It is not strange that their ideas will get promoted at times.

It is my view that such power and responsibility should never be left in the hands of a few. I believe it is our responsibility as concerned citizens to make sure we are not merely passive viewers, readers or listeners. Together we can have a huge influence on the media by making our views known.

Once a month, just after sunset, trucks fill an outdoor parking lot in Los Angeles, California. Some trucks have clothing or jewelry for sale. They are known as fashion trucks that can go to any place where there are more customers.

When you come into a fashion truck, it's kind of like going into a small clothes shop, and you can choose through everything. The back of the truck is a mini-store. Clothing hangs on one side. Jewelry and purses are on the other side. The store looks well-organized. There is also a very small room for trying on clothes.

Jordana Fortaleza, one of the stores' owners, says the cost of owning a truck is much lower than making monthly payments for a short use of a store. And you can take your business to the customers. But Jordana Fortaleza says there are also difficulties. The biggest challenge is the weather. When it's cold outside, there is no one going out to visit the fashion trucks. Another problem is the truck. When it breaks down, the repairs can take days and business has to stop during the repair work.

Fashion trucks are giving Internet business some competition. California Fashion Association President Ilse Metchek says impulse(冲动的) buying was once a big part of house shop sales. Now many people buy goods online where careful buying happens. She says shoppers may be more attracted in fashion trucks by the good prices.

Jordana Fortaleza says business owners are putting more than just nice stores on wheels. “Any kind of business you can put in a house shop can be put into a truck. So, there is a truck that sells flowers, and another that features special sportswear. A non-profit (非盈利的) group, St. Vincent de Paul, specially sells used goods,” she added.

After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight finally. On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it?

That September, I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What's worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.

However, then I did not have audio books and electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked part-time, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mom always thought

those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher.

In my room, Mom's voice competed with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people's challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book.

True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child.

According to a study in Norway, students who stayed in school longer than others of their age scored higher in intelligence tests.

In the middle of the 1950s, the government began requiring students to attend school until the age of sixteen instead of fourteen. Communities had almost twenty years to make the change. So some students went to school for seven years while others went for at least nine years. This difference gave researchers the chance to see if the extra schooling had any effect on the development of intelligence.

All young men in Norway must take a test of their cognitive (认知的) abilities at age nineteen in preparation for required military service (兵役). This is commonly called an IQ test.

The researchers compared the test results of 107,000 young men to their years of schooling. Taryn Ann Galloway, a researcher at the University of Oslo, says, “The young men who were basically forced to stay in school for two years longer actually do have higher IQs. So, based on that, we can say that increasing schooling did actually have an effect on their cognitive abilities.”

An average IQ was one hundred. Most people scored between eighty-five and one hundred and fifteen.

Ms Galloway says that students who attended school for nine years scored seven

points higher than those who attended for seven years. Those who went for eight years scored about four points higher.

Experts have debated for years about the degree to whether people are born with intelligence or develop it later. This is the nature versus nurture (教育) argument—the influence of biology compared to the environment where people are raised and educated. This study seems to support the nurture side.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

The UK has lots of strange traditions. One of those is pancake racing. This

tradition comes from Shrove Tuesday, or, as many like to call it, Pancake Day. The day falls on the last Tuesday of February this year. 16

Pancakes in the UK are large and thin and can be topped with either salty or sweet ingredient(配料). People make pancakes in their homes. 17 One of them is pancake racing.

18 As they run, they have to throw the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. The winner is the first to reach the finish line, although they should also be careful to make sure that the pancake is complete and that it hasn't broken along the way.

One of the most famous pancake races is the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race.

19 The race is a competition between two teams—one team of Members of Parliament (MPs), and one team of journalists—most of whom take part in the race wearing their work suits! The race is shown on the news and is covered on TV all around the world. 20 It raises awareness for the charity(慈善机构) Rehab, which works with people with disabilities and others who suffer from social exclusion in the UK.

A.On Pancake Day, people across the UK make and eat pancakes.

B.This takes place on the morning of Shrove Tuesday in London.

C.It is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world.

D.And as well as a bit of fun, the race is also held for a good cause.

E.There are many customs connected with the making of pancakes.

F.In a typical pancake race, people have to run holding a frying pan with a pancake in it.

G.But you might also find that some schools or businesses hold special Pancake Day events.

案为G。]
