The Scarlet Letter makes Hawthorne who is a famous American writer known all over the world. The story begins in 17th century, Boston, then a puritan settlement. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne used the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they branded sinners for life. Although Puritan society is unforgiving towards the sinful scarlet letter, their strictness improved the bearers of the sin. The scarlet letter was also an example of how Puritan society will always remember the sin. “When strangers looked curiously at the scarlet letter-and none failed to do so, they branded it afresh into Hester’s soul.” A letter “A” but freshly green, instead of scarlet was created by her, showing how Hawthorne made a jest at the punishment Puritans put upon Hester. And the scarlet letter was also a toy to Pearl, something that she enjoyed. Hawthorne uses the scarlet letter to depict his feelings of the exaggerated emotions of the puritans and their overly dramatThe Scarlet Letter

the scarlet letter was declared a classic almost immediately after its publication in 1850, and it has stayed in print and in favor ever since. it has been hailed both as the first symbolic novel and as the first psychological novel(even though it was written before there was a science called psychology). but what really secures the place of the scarlet letter in the literary history is its treatment of human nature, sin, guilt, and pride--all timeless, universal

themes--from a uniquely american point of view.

in the decades that followed the american revolution, the united states struggled to distinguish itself culturally from europe. there was a sense that if the united states were to become a great nation, it needed to have its own artistic traditions, not transplanted imitations of european models. hawthorne rose to this challenge. the scarlet letter is set in the mid-seventeenth century in a puritan colony on the edge of an untamed forest still inhabited by native americans. the landscape is wholly american. in the book, hawthorne manages to put his finger on several thematic elements that came to define the american national identity: the effects of the strict religious morality, the long struggle against a vast frontier, the troubled relationship between white settlers and native americans. these issues were just as relevant in hawthorne's day

as they were in puritan times, and the way americans and the united states government addressed these issues shaped the development of the nation. what is perhaps even more remarkable about this 150-year-old story if that its characters face the same moral struggles as readers in the twenty-first century. in puritan massachusetts, morality was strictly legislated and church and state were one and the same. although church and state have been separate legally since the bill of rights was ratified in 1791, issues of morality, personal freedom, and public life are still hot topics of national debate. should politicans be called to account for their personal lives? must public figures serve as role models?does our government have a right to make laws controlling, private behavior?

in puritan colonies, sinners were often branded with a hot iron and put up on a scaffold for public mockery. we no longer use actual branding irons on the people whose moral failings we condemn. but modern media are far more effective than scaffolds for holding people up for public scrutiny, and the american public's readiness to judge the sins of others remains just as strong as it was 350 years ago. modern readers will see much of themselves in the characters of the scarlet letter.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer.

Nathaniel Hathorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne. His ancestors include John Hathorne, a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne". He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824,[1] and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, leaving behind his wife and their three children.

Much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his friend Franklin Pierce.

Vol.34 No.1Journal of Sout hwest University(Social Sciences Edition)J an.,2008 品艺?

The Symbolic Meaning of the Scarlet Letter

The Symbolic Meaning of the Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne always wears on her chest a scarlet letter “A”, which is the central symbol of the novel. It shows different identities of Hester. And the symbolic meaning changes from “Adultery” to “Angel”. I will analyze it from the following three aspects. 1. Adultery During that time, the strict Puritans rule Boston and they punish the people who break their rules. Hester really commits a crime of adultery. When she stands on the platform, the letter “A”is the sign of punishment of her adultery, and the color scarlet is a symbol of sin. The scarlet looks like blood and fire, which can be regarded as desire. There is passionate love between Hester and the priest, but it brings them misfortune. Hester has to wear the scarlet “A” as a punishment and she will never forget her crime. With the shame, she is regarded as a naughty woman. Red should be regarded as the symbol of love and life, but under the control of Puritan strictness, it’s a symbol of shame and punishment. When Hester first appears, she doesn’t look like a criminal but a loving mother. She is grace and elegant, holding her baby to the chest. She stands proudly to bear her punishment. That is impressive to me. Her spirit is full of disobedience and strength. In addition, from the words I can see the elegantly sewn letter “A” is an art. 2. Alone and Alienation Hester lives a lonely life without friend. Only her daughter Pearl accompanies her. What’s worse, because her crime is still within town, people insult her and treat her badly. Even children are afraid to get close to her. She suffers great from the mental torment. If I were she, I couldn’t stand such kind of pressure. I would leave for a new place where no one knows me and begin a new life. However, she chooses to face the reality rather than escape from it. She is patient to those insulting words and even tries to forgive those people. 3. Able, Admirable and Angle

On the Symbolic Meaning of the Letter “A” in the Scarlet 2010403210223 Abstract:There are many different views among scholars about the symbolic meaning of the letter “A”in the scarlet letter. For instance, “A”for “adultery”, “angel” and “able”. Contrary to these scholars, this paper holds opinions that the letter “A” is the symbol of “adore”, “alone”“admirable”. This article focuses on these four things to analyze the whole novel. Key words:the Scarlet Letter, symbolism, romantic, Hester 一、Introduction The Scarlet Letter is considered as the most famous novel of the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, who is one of the greatest romantic writers in the 19th century. This novel told us a story about Hester Prynne, who committed adultery with her puritan minister Arthur Dimmesdale and has given birth to a child, Pearl, during the time her husband was disappeared. So, she was forced to wear the letter “A” on her bosom all the time as a punishment. But when Hester’s former husband—Chillingworth knows the adultery after his arrival in Boston, he began to revenge on and torments Dimmesdale until his death. Many years later, Hester dies and she is buried with Dimmesdale. Their love continues after life, and the scarlet letter changes its meaning in people’s heart. In this work, Hawthorne successfully uses symbolism by concentrates on his creative characteristics and experience and make the scarlet letter his most famous masterpiece around the world. Nathaniel Hawthorn was born on the fourth of July, 1804 in Sales, Massachusetts. Some of his ancestors were big shots in seventeenth-century New England, which was under the control of Puritanism. One of them was a colonial magistrate, notorious for his participation in the persecution of Quakers, and another was a judge at the Sales Witchcraft Trail in 1692. Gradually, the family fortune declined. Hawthorne’s father was a sea captain, who died in an accident and left his mother and him behind to struggle to live for themselves. Young Hawthorn was quite aware of the misdeed of his Puritan ancestors, and this awareness made him believe that evil was at the core of human life. To some extent, Hawthorn wrote some of his books, such as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gambles to try to make up for the sin of his ancestors. He is an extremely renowned American writer of fiction. He not only has

A Reading Report of The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804—May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. He was a key figure in the development of American literature for his tales of the nation’s colonial history. His four major novels were written between 1850 and 1860, and they were The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun. The story took place in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrated love affairs between three persons. They were Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. Roger was an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester was his wife, but she did not love him at all. Two years ago, Hester was sent alone across the ocean by Roger. However, Roger did not show up thereafter. While waiting, Hester fell in love with another man, Dimmesdale, who was a young minister and had a high position among ministers and was highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale loved each other, but their love was forbidden in that time. It was sinful because they committed adultery. And the secret was finally discovered because of Hester’s pregnancy. Due to this, Hester was punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which was considered as an evil and a shame. However, Hester refused to tell the name of the father even when she was asked to stand on the scaffold. And she chose to bear all the shame and punishment by herself. At the same time, Roger Chillingworth appeared and tried to take revenge on the adulterer. As time goes on, Hester’s daughter, Pearl was seven years old. And Roger became a real devil. He pretended to live with Dimmesdale to treat his disease. Actually, he just wanted to revenge him. Finally, Dimmesdale was weaker and weaker. In the end, Dimmesdale told the truth to the folks on the scaffold that he was Pearl’s father, and then he died. Roger also died after one year because the revenge took his all energy and strength. Hester then lived alone in her cottage far away from the city by herself. Pearl became a rich woman and lived in a happy life. When Hester died, she was buried next to Dimmesdale. The two shared a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining

An Impression on The Scarlet Letter After finishing reading the novel scarlet letter, I feel very much sad and depressed. I am sorry for the three main characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur dimmesdale and Roger chillingworth. The tragedy between them revealed the cruelty of the society, the deception of region and hypocrisy of moral. The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It mainly tells us the love affairs between three people, Hester Prynne and his husband, Roger Chillingworth and a young minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester does not love his husband at all. Arthur Dimmesdale is a minister and is highly respected by the people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden at that time. That’s why Hester is punished by wearing a letter A on her chest, which is considered a shame. First of all, I want to talk about the protagonist, Hester Prynne. She is my favorite character in this novel. She is a brave and passionate lady. She is a kind and helpful woman. The novel described her as follows, ‘so picturesque in her clothing and manner, and with the infant at her bosom, an object to remind him of the image of Divine Maternity, which so many great painters have struggled with one another to represent ’. From my point of view, she is the embodiment of beauty, kindness and truth. She wears the scarlet letter A for seven years because she makes an unforgivable mistake--- Adultery. Although nearly all the habitants in the region reject her,she still tries her best to help everyone in need. She could face everyone's despise and contempt, but she could not face her daughter - Pearl. As she said, ‘She is my happiness!--she is my torture, none the less! Pearl keeps me here in life! Pearl punish es me too!’ Pearl, like a living ‘scarlet letter’ to punish Hester, reminds her of the unbearable memories. However, she didn't kill pearl’s wild nature. She raises her with care and love. She loves the priest and bears the humiliation alone, which was enough to show her great love. Later, when her husband, the doctor revenges Arthur, she even encouraged Arthur to leave the region together with her, although in the end
